Hello, and welcome to Steele watching, a podcast for Remington Steele fans. I'm Sara, and I swear I'm innocent. Maybe.
Eric:And I'm Eric. And my friends don't call me Tony, and that's why I don't call Vercelli Tony because he's not my friend.
Sara:He did it. He he killed Keyes.
Eric:That's right. Blame him.
Sara:Yeah. Exactly. Tony did it. Yeah. And do we before we get into the 2nd 0.5 and all this stuff, should we are are there emails and stuff we wanna talk about?
Eric:I I sent you some emails. I don't know if
Sara:you Yes. You did.
Eric:Copied them. Why don't you go ahead and start, with those? And then I've got some that's I've got some feedback that you haven't seen yet.
Sara:Oh, I am intrigued and wish to subscribe to your newsletter. So there was 1 from a new listener named well, actually, we're we're not naming names, but you know who you are. And they started with and I they had actually had some things to say about London, Ontario, so I wanted to kind of respond to that. But they did point out that the email starts with, I heard you mention air national guard. My dad was in the air force, and I remember he had TBY several times in Alaska. Don't know what that is. I'm assuming
Eric:Temporary duty.
Sara:Cool. Okay. Yes. I think it was. Also, watched Remington Steele when it was
Eric:filmed here. It right,
Sara:you silly Canadian you. I've never been there. We're no stranger to odd names ourselves. There is a dildo Newfoundland. That's a real place.
Eric:What's what's their what's their their, main economic product?
Sara:Well, funnily enough, it's it's the body of water that is near as Conception Bay.
Eric:And the reason they do things are are generally not associated with with with each other. Well, the 1 is designed to prevent the other. Yeah.
Sara:And, also, there was a picture that went viral a while back of a iceberg that looked like Yeah. The male anatomy. Yeah. And it was in conception pain. You're it was like it was like it was just all kind of
Eric:like Oh, you silly Canadian do.
Sara:So pardon me if I if I pronounce that 1 place wrong, but, you know, we got our own problems. So
Eric:Obviously.
Sara:Anyway, this person also wrote, also, watched Remington's deal when it was 1st aired with my dad. I don't remember my mom watching it, although we watched other shows together. Eric and Sara, thank you for pointing out the humor in each episode. I was rewatching them on Hallmark and laughed out loud. Honestly, there's probably a lot of humor in the Hallmark episodes just in general because we're told they edited out everything good. So but this person said they laughed out loud at some of the things in the episode. I don't remember noticing that when I was younger, but maybe it went over my head at the time. I finished the 1st season. I will send another email in a in a day or so with my comments. I am trying to binge listen to catch up on where you where you are in the 4th season. Now we're in the 5th. So
Eric:And that's that's gonna be a lot of sitting. They're they're yeah. Don't don't try and do it all in 1 city.
Sara:Right? That's gonna be that's gonna be a lot. So you might wanna you might wanna pace yourself. Yes. So then they said I'm just trying to find the other because it's in a couple of separate emails here. So Mhmm. Bear with me for a 2nd. I think it's here. Uh-huh. They had some season 5 suggestions, and that's in here too. But this person wrote, watching hockey, I have learned Canadian geography like Kamloops is in BC and Moose Jaws in Saskatchewan, and Dildo is in. Newfoundland. The more you know. Yeah. So I
Eric:also Even though you didn't want to.
Sara:Right. I've also been to London, Ontario. I saw Pearl Jam play there at the London Nights Arena. That's a while back because and I don't it's the London Knights don't play at the ice house anymore. They play at what was originally the John Labatt Center, and then Budweiser Gardens and is now Canada Life Place. It keeps changing names. I can't keep up. But that
Eric:2 bears in 1 insurance.
Sara:Right? They said we stayed in Hamilton, went to an ice after hours place that was diagonally from the arena. And if it was the original ice house, that would be I'm not sure where that would be. But if it was downtown, it was probably, like, the Richmond or something. But they said Pearl Jam fans met up, had meetups at specific bars before and after shows and raised money for charities that Pearl Jam support. There was a guy from Sweden we met at the show, and he better mentioned meeting him in the elevator and at their hotel. Sweden was going to the PJ Meetup. I heard someone say, hey, Sweden. Don't go there. You'll get killed. I did not get that feeling about London. It seems safe. Either 1, every city has places to just be more aware of your surroundings when you were there. Or 2, he was cute. Maybe she didn't wanna go there and wanted him to go where she was going. I I without knowing the place, I can't I can't speak to it, but I gotta say, I've never walked Downtown London and thought, I'm gonna die. Like, that was never that was never the thought. Obviously, again, there are places that are maybe less safe than others. But overall, most of Downtown London and or other areas in London are, by and large, pretty safe. It is Canada after all. But, yeah, I mean, East Of Adelaide is a little iffy, but yeah. So that's kinda cool that they've been to London. Yay. They did did you want me to read some of the other suggestions for season 5 or that they had?
Eric:Up to you. It's your show. They
Sara:just suggested for 1, the music theme song, individual themes for certain characters, no lyrics for theme, but we know as soon as you hear it, which I think is the sign of a good TV theme song, it is quite interesting that Henry Mancini, a movie composer such as Pink Panther, did the theme for a TV show. I think that's maybe why the score is so good, and this is just me editorializing. But, like, I think we had a real there was a really good composer for this show. And when you have a really good composer-
Eric:Mancini didn't do the the episodic music.
Sara:No. I know. But I just in general.
Eric:Like She definitely set a standard for it.
Sara:Exactly. Yeah.
Eric:With the themes. Yeah.
Sara:Then they said, I think I may have seen him conduct an orchestra during a summer concert series, or it may have been John Williams. If I find the ticket, I will look up
Eric:I always get those 2 guys confused.
Sara:Yeah. John William. He's everywhere. Literally everywhere. Yes. Also, music interest interest me since I was a music major. 2nd suggestion, fashion sweater watch. I like Pierce's long leather coat in Ireland. Are the fashion choices classic still wear today or dated? Laura definitely wear wore the eighties power suit for sure. Number 3, same costumer for all 5 seasons, or can we see a change in Laura's attire by the costumer and the season? I don't know if there was a different costumer. If anybody knows that, feel free to let us know because I don't know. Do you know if they switched? Yeah. I have this person.
Eric:Never looked at the credits that closely.
Sara:Yeah. This person said I am 5 foot 2 almost, and I got pretty good at running in heels until a foot injury. It's been a rude awakening for me to realize that I'm not tall. Remington's hair mostly stay the same stays the same, but Laura goes through hair metamorphosis. True. Number 4, moments. There are moments in each episode that are maybe comedic gems or Steele revealing more about himself in his past or Laura revealing more about her fears or seen or a scene between them. And number 5, different locations where they exist in real life. I wish I knew where the detective agency in Steele's apartment was when I visited LA at the in the nineties. My parents would have probably gone by there, though there was no GPS then. My dad just had a just my dad and a map. So, yeah, I mean, those are all things that we've talked about as well in terms of suggestions. So I think Yeah. We could probably I don't know if they'd be enough for a single episode, but we could maybe sort of mash a couple together and see what we could come up with. Or
Eric:Yeah. The the biggest challenge is gonna be the time that it takes. It it's it takes a a fair amount of time. I'm sure you'll agree, Sara, that takes a fair amount of time just to do these episodes. And here here we're working with video and we're working with transcripts and copies of the scripts, and we're focusing on 1 single episode at a time. If we were to do a topic across, you know, 1, 2, 3, all 5 seasons, that would be a lot of time and a lot of research. So, I mean, we're not dismissing it as an idea. It's just that it's it would be the kind of thing where we wouldn't get out episodes very, very quickly. That's for sure.
Sara:No. It it would take a little longer for sure, but I think we could probably figure something out. So Yeah.
Eric:It's just that we may have to go to a to a very, very random and and very occasional schedule.
Sara:Yeah. Do you wanna continue with some of the other correspondents?
Eric:Okay. Got an email here, and it says, thanks for all your hard work and opening my eyes to parts of the episodes that I missed originally. Speaking of coffee, tea, and Steele, when it comes to the male flyers treating the flight attendants rudely and pinching their butts, I was in a local production of the interactive play Tony and Tina's Wedding. Don't know anything about it. 1st 0.5 of the play is at an Italian American church service, and the 2nd 0.5 is in the reception with food, and there's a lot of improv in the show. Some of the guys who attended the show in the audience thought that participation meant pulling the actresses onto their laps, and we had to have a word that we would tell the actors if there was someone bothering the female actresses so they would know that we were talking as ourselves and not as our characters, and it is a bit. And they they added to you, Sara, specifically, that this person was a New York Rangers fan, 1985.'85 was still part of the Rangers no. Was still part of the Rangers was the Smurf era when a lot of the players were fast but small, such as Rejio, Routzen Routzeleianen. Yeah. Yeah. If you can
Sara:I gotta check and see
Eric:figure out who that is from what I said
Sara:Hold on?
Eric:Good on you, who played for the Oilers later.
Sara:So Rousselenian?
Eric:Okay. That sounds kinda close. Yeah. Rao Rousselenian? Yeah. Rousselenian. Whatever. Yes. So that was 1. Do you have any more? I do have 1 more thing.
Sara:I'm not sure. I thought that was it, but maybe I'm missing something.
Eric:No. Okay. If you don't, I'm I'm no. I'm just asking. I'm not Okay.
Sara:I'm not
Eric:that was not intended to be.
Sara:Yeah. I was just 2nd guessing myself. I'm like, I thought that was it. I don't know.
Eric:Alright. We did get a Spotify comment and it says, according to every site I can find oh, and this was specifically what was this? The episode was which episode was it? Still alive and kicking.
Sara:Right.
Eric:According to every site I can find, US states cannot require you to carry an ID if you are merely walking or appearing in public. To do so would be a violation of the 4th Amendment, which reads, the right of the people to be secure in their persons' houses and papers and facts against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated, with persons being the applicable content in this case. I I just thought of something that I didn't include in my response to them, but I did respond to them saying, thanks for the info. I, Eric, agree with that this is true in the strict legal sense, but I'm not sure it's necessarily true in the practical sense, especially if you fit the description. You know, in which case, you will definitely regret regret not carrying any ID with you. Yeah.
Sara:That's and
Eric:then my other other thing was that I I think there's probably a lot of lawyers and lawmakers and prosecutors and cops who would say that being secure in your person, house, papers, and effects against unreasonable search and seizures has nothing to do with proving your identity. Yeah.
Sara:That
Eric:has to do with seizing your property, doing a search of you or your property, things like that. But it's not necessarily I understand what this person's saying, but I think a lawyer would say that it's a stretch to argue that they can't require you to provide some ID.
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:Because it it's that doesn't constitute a search or a seizure. But, anyway, we do appreciate their feedback and the response. So, yeah, you know, even even if somebody disagrees with us, we love it.
Sara:We do.
Eric:Yes.
Sara:We do. I mean, I disagree with Eric all the time. So
Eric:And she is so wrong so often.
Sara:I don't know. I've gotten a lot of your Sara's right comments. I'm just saying.
Eric:Well, I've gotten a few Eric is right comments too. So About about the outfit that wearing. No. No. No. Don't don't even start quoting out percentages. I don't I don't wanna hear it. No.
Sara:I wasn't. I was referring to the outfit that they're wearing in still alive and kicking. Apparently, I am in the minority on that 1. But
Eric:Oh, yes. Yes.
Sara:The I'll take all the I'll take all the other wins. Yeah. I'll take all the other wins. I'm just saying.
Eric:Okay. That's all I've got.
Sara:Alright. So we are going to be talking about the 2nd 0.5 of season 5 episode 1, the Steele that wouldn't die part 2. So Do you do you want to pick a synopsis? Yeah. I I mean, I just had the 1 that was on there
Eric:Okay.
Sara:Like, for the whole thing. But I was all I was gonna do is I was basically just gonna say where we're what hap happened in the 1st 0.5 because the Your gig. The overall synopsis said the TV series that wouldn't die is reincarnated. We already read this before. The union is designed as a marriage of convenience, blah blah blah. And, basically, that 1st 0.5 that we saw of last week had Laura and Steele try to go on a honeymoon to prove that they're actually married. They end up at the Hotel Del Amour, which is awful. Steele tries to go into Las Jardas to use the phone and or make alternate reservations. Laura attempts her own trek into the jungle, meets up with, my friends call me Tony Roselli, who seems to save her from some. However, we quickly learned that he hired them to ambush her, so he's obviously hiding something. They arrive at the hotel, which Steele has booked. And even though he went through quite a bit himself, they find him in pretty comfortable digs. Laura and Steele have a weirdly engineered fight. They go to have dinner on the terrace with Honey to honey. Tony.
Eric:Hey. Is that the 1 with the nuts?
Sara:Yeah. Someone's nuts with Tony to say, you know, thank you. Obviously, Steele being irritating, trying to get under Laura's skin. And toe aside from Tony being there, Keyes is there. Keyes also popped up earlier in that episode at the hotel desk. Steele gets into a fight with him, punches him out. He flies over the balcony and into a pool, which everybody cheers. But, unfortunately, he turns up dead and steals what what looks like Steele his hotel room, but it's supposed to be steel's hotel room. We couldn't quite figure that out. Steele tries to dispose the body, and he's caught, and that was where we left off. Yes. I figured it was easier to just do that. Okay. The notes for this filmed on location in and around Los Jatas, Mexico. Obviously, just kind of pointing that out. And we open with the local jail in Las Jatas.
Eric:You know, for some reason, you you look at the resort, and some of the shots that we get of the area surrounding it, like, in the last episode, of shot from across the the inlet there from the golf course. That looks like a pretty nice town. Looks like a pretty nice
Sara:Yeah. It does. It looks gorgeous.
Eric:Well, how come their jail does doesn't match? Their jail looks like something that would be, you know, I mean, just
Sara:That's the tourism area versus the actual you you there's a reason why when you go to resorts like this, they tell you not to go off the resort. And and this is true for a lot of places. Like, when I went to Cuba in Varadero, our resort was gorgeous. When we've entered into the less touristy areas of that particular part of Cuba, it was it was very much not beautiful resort type areas. They they obviously subsist on the tourism money by building these absolutely gorgeous, all inclusive, you know, almost like little compounds that they don't want the tourists to leave. The same
Eric:as Well, there's children there's probably also some political reasons for that too.
Sara:Yeah. Oh, for sure.
Eric:But but, you know, just Las Las Jatas looks like a a kind of an upscale town. You'd figure that you they would have a little bit nicer jail than that is all I'm saying.
Sara:Like, my mom did the same in Mexico, though. They had a little was like, not like a townhouse that they rented every winter. And there were certain areas that were fine for them to go to in other areas that definitely weren't. And I don't think that the jailhouse would really be on the priority list for the tourism money. You know what I mean? It's probably Hey.
Eric:Hey. That would be or you arrest the tourists. You put them in a jail. Okay. It doesn't have to be swanky, but at least kind of a nice place so that you impress them.
Sara:But then make come back?
Eric:Yeah. But and so so and then you hit them for these really exorbitant finds. But yeah.
Sara:Yeah. It is definitely not the premier destination that still wants to be in. And he looks miserable. Like, he's got the the 5 day shadow or the is that what it's
called? 5 05:00 shadow.
That's what I meant He's to got the 05:00 shadow. He looks like he hasn't slept. He's he's not he's not doing great. Laura comes in, and
Eric:she asks I like white. I I don't know. I what what happened? Suddenly, I like white.
Sara:It's like that is a gorgeous outfit she's got on, I have to say. I'm I'm still not sold on the bangs. I don't know what it is, but they just I I think they age her in a way that's I don't know. I I might be wrong.
Eric:It's almost a negative age.
Sara:Yeah. I don't know. It just feels like it feels like they were striving to make her look more housewifey.
Eric:Oh, it could be.
Sara:And and that's what what the banks kinda do, which, again, there's nothing wrong with being a housewife. I'm not certainly not it's just not what Laura is, so it kinda feels out of character. But, anyway, she comes in, and she asks him if he's alright. He says, you wouldn't happen to have that mosquito netting, would you? Which is kinda funny. She asked him what happened, and he asked if she wants the official version or the truth. I mean, it's kind of an odd question. What does he think she wants? But, anyway Yeah. She tells him she's already heard the official version, and he tells her that they're both painfully similar except for 1 minor detail. Keys was already dead when he found him in the room. Laura asks why he didn't call someone and Steele retorts with, and tell them what? The man he knocked off a 50 foot balcony had the audacity, the bad manners to expire on his floor? Laura should have thought of that already.
Eric:Well, like yeah. But, I mean, here, again, we have it we have a reference to Keys having been in Steele's room when he found him dead. Yeah. Whereas the appearance of the room that was presented
Sara:It looks like didn't match. Yeah. I know. We're supposed to just take this on
Eric:Yes.
Sara:Faith that it was Yeah. Yeah. Laura says it's better than trying to hide his body in a tent on the beach. Steele sarcastically says, remind me not to hire you as my defense attorney. Laura says that he was at the Hotel Del Amore the day before they arrived, and Steele seemed surprised by this. I'm not really sure why becau Well, actually, I guess, I can understand why because seeing him at the fancy hotel is 1 thing. But I would like to know Key's obviously arranged this whole thing. Right? How did he know that they were going to come specifically to that hotel after leaving the Hotel Del Amore? Or a matter of fact, how did he know that I mean, I get you could predict that Steele wouldn't wanna stay at that mosquito net ridden Mhmm. Dump. But what if they did? What if they decided to just let it ride or had or went to a different fancy hotel? Well Like, it
Eric:Yeah. I I I guess you could say that Keys knows Steele well enough that he wouldn't have put up with it and that he would have gone somewhere. And and I don't know what else there is in Las Haddas in terms of high end hotels.
Sara:No. I mean, I I don't know either, but it just feels like that was taking I get why he went to the Hotel Delmore because he wanted to establish a pattern of steals still following him. But yeah. So he it looks like he's been following him all over Mexico. Still realizes that's why their travel plans changed. And Laura, in a fit of frustration, says, why don't you have a name? Ugh.
Eric:Yeah. I got something I wanna come back to in in a minute. But, yeah, why don't you have an I mean, it it's that seems to come out of nowhere. Yeah. That's the 1st thing. And then the 2nd thing is he does have a name. Well, I it's it's you know, as as far as his, quote, real name, what does it matter? A rose by any other name still has thorns.
Sara:Yeah. I I I have in my notes, I said, I hate this. She knows why. She gave him his. She can call him Remington. It feels like she's throwing his trauma back at him. He can't help his past.
Eric:Yeah. Like Is it just
Sara:Why don't you have a name feels like an accusation? He he doesn't know like, he's he tried. That's why he he left in at the end of season 3. He tried to find his name. He hit he came up against a dead end. He made peace with it when she gave him the passport Mhmm. In the name of Remington Steele.
Eric:But she obviously hasn't.
Sara:And she obviously hasn't. This is her her issue, Or not
Eric:or this is the writers trying to stir up some controversy.
Sara:Honestly, it feels like that's what it feels like. I I can sort of the only way that I can try to engineer it in my head to fit the storyline is that she wants to comfort him, and she's never grown comfortable calling him by his name and it feels distanced calling him mister Steele. But that, again, is is her issue. Like, it's not his.
Eric:Yeah. And You know? The other thing is and it's still her issue is that she knows that she created the name.
Sara:Yeah. Right?
Eric:So it to her, it feels fake. And so even though she gave him that name, it's still a fake name. And so she has issues with the name simply because she knows it's fake because she created it. But, again, like you said, that's her issue.
Sara:I will say it would be kind of odd to, in a fit of passion, say that particular name. I'm just saying. You know, it just doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. But at the same time, when they had that moment in where she gave him the passport, I like I like what they the trope of having a character refer to another character solely by their last name unless otherwise in moments of intimacy is a is a familiar 1. We've talked about how Booth and Brennan do it, right? She calls him Booth almost all the time, but occasionally she calls him silly, or he occasionally calls her temperance. Same is true with, Castle. Right? Occasionally, he'll call her Kate or she'll occasionally call him Richard. And those are usually reserved for moments where the 2 of them are having some sort of, like and not just physical intimacy, but, like, emotional connection, right? So I would have liked to have seen Laura and Steele build up that that element of it, where she might call him Remington or Rem. I can't deal with Remy. That sounds silly. But have him call her have her call him that in those moments where they've dropped the veneer. They've dropped the facade. Obviously, in the office around clients and stuff like that, she she has to say mister Steele. But when they're in their intimate private life or they're having a you know, this for example, this moment here would have been a good point for her to say, I'll get you out of the Remington, I'll get you out of this or something like that. Mhmm. Yeah. Instead, she just kind of, like, goes on the attack over it. And she, at at any point, she could have started calling him by this name, the 1 that they've established for him. Yeah. So I don't know. It bothered I do
Eric:and by doing that, it it it creates the I don't wanna say habit because that has a negative connotation.
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:But it it creates the ease and the comfort with the name and saying the name, and that would have changed her attitude and her emotional response to that name entirely simply just by using it.
Sara:Exactly. And it would have brought them closer together if they if if, you know, if she calls him this if she calls him Remington or Rem Mhmm. In these private moments, it it tells him that she's on his side. Mhmm. She believes him. She trusts him, all that stuff. Instead, she turns around here and says, why don't you have a name? And it's like and then he looks surprised by this, and she says she feels like a fool calling him mister Steele or Remington at a time like this and asked why he why he can't have a regular name like everybody else. Again, that that just feels so unfair. Like, you can't blame somebody for their for a past they had nothing to do with as especially as a child.
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:Like, you know, he didn't choose the life that he was given. That was what he got dealt with. So it's her own frustration, but she's flipping it against him, and I don't love it. She tells him that if there was ever a time for them to be completely honest with each other, this is it. That there are many times she wanted to kill Hees with her bare hands. And I'm sorry. Does she real this too. Like, she knows him. She might not, like, know all the hello? You there? Uh-oh. Erica's frozen. Uh-oh. I've lost you. Come back. Oh, and now I'm alone. I don't know what happened to Eric. Well, hopefully, he comes back soon. It was me. I drove him away.
Eric:Well, your electrical storm apparently caused my computer to restart.
Sara:Okay. That's what happened because
Eric:And Oh, okay. And I just lost 1 of my screens again. This is crazy. This is weird.
Sara:I'm gonna rewind when you're ready. No. Apparently, that screen is not
Eric:oh, maybe it is coming back.
Sara:Maybe it is. Maybe it is. Maybe it is.
Eric:Good. Okay. Alright. So, yes, I I I disappeared on you. I Yeah. That don't take that personally.
Sara:Yeah. I was starting I was like, he did he's gone. He's he left me. He abandoned me. Anyway, I'm over it. Moving on. So I'm gonna rewind. I was had just said that she basically says there are times when I wanted to kill keys with my bare hands, hinting that she thinks that he might have actually killed keys. And this also does not read true for me because Laura knows him. She knows he's not he's not typically a violent man at all. Like, he will fight if he has to, and he gets angry if somebody obviously threatens her or with keys. It's easy. It's easy to punch him in the face. He's just so darn punchable, but he's not somebody he doesn't like guns. He doesn't like to carry the agency gun. He doesn't go off 0.5 cocked looking to throw hands. Like, that's not his. What are you gonna say? He's fully cocked?
Eric:Is that is that what the Talking about guns and going off 0.5 cocked. I
Sara:if Okay.
Eric:Right. We
Sara:started with dildo and Saskatchewan sorry, at Newfoundland, and this is where we ended up. But anyway but my point is that killing somebody even by accident, he she saw how upset he was when he thought he accidentally ran over Major Duskoin in in Steele frame. Like, he's not a killer.
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:And to even try to hint that, oh, I could understand if you lost your temper. What?
Eric:Yeah. No.
Sara:That's That's wildly out of character. That just doesn't and he and he says that but you didn't, and neither did I. Right? Laura says something else saying what she's trying to say is that she could understand if he goaded you past all reason and you couldn't control yourself. Like, that's not who he is. Yeah.
Eric:He punched him. He he generally doesn't get beyond all reason. He he doesn't get to that point typically. He hit He has other ways of of dealing with it.
Sara:Like, he hit keys in that restaurant. He's a deserved it and b, a punch is not the same as losing complete control and, you know, going after somebody to the point where you're gonna kill them. Yeah. So he gets angry, obviously, and insists that he didn't kill Keyes. Laura doesn't challenge him. She lets it go. She says the 1st order of business is to get him out so that they can prove it. Sorry. He says that. Laura says there's no chance. She checked. Steele says he's not staying in this jail cell and watching them build his gallows outside. She says that he's gonna have to do a little praying and start by praying that she's as good as detective as she as she claims to be. So it also doesn't feel like she's terribly eager to try to help him get out of jail, which is unfortunate. Yeah.
Eric:It doesn't seem that way, but she's probably looking at you know, she's probably talked to the the police down there and whatever other local legal authorities there are and has been told, no, it's not happening, end of discussion. And I would say that probably, and I don't know this from personal experience or direct knowledge, but I'm gonna say probably the police in other places than The US, for example, here in Mexico, they they don't really care what you think or what you say. And True. You know? And it's like, well, but he you know, he's innocent. We gotta get him out so we can prove it. It doesn't matter. Well, I've got I've got a powerful attorney, and he's we're gonna pay no bail. No. It's just not happening. They have very different legal system. And and imagine once he's in there, it's it's cut and dried. He's not coming out until we can hear Interestingly. Found guilty or found not guilty. And so Laura's maybe looking at it from just a strictly
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:Practical and re realistic sense.
Sara:Well, interestingly, though, there is a scene that was cut from the script in which his jailbreak it it actually shows that his jailbreak was tacitly allowed by the the cops, which I can kind of understand why they cut it because it we'll get we'll I'll I'll read it when we get there, but it was a bit silly. Yeah. So, yeah, we switched to Laura
Eric:Waughnessy side. Before we go on
Sara:I'm sorry.
Eric:Before we go on, I have a couple more comments on a Okay. More personal nature. I I did say that I liked White suddenly. The shots as I was watching this, the shots of Laura through the jail bars, I caught something, or I I thought I caught something. And I looked at it. And I went back to the 1st 0.5 of the episode and looked and did a comparison. And then I went back to Bonds of Steele and did a comparison. And I honestly believe and and I know some of this is is being enhanced by the lighting.
Sara:Right.
Eric:But I honestly believe that her face has changed slightly. Not Mark Hamill in a car wreck changed, but Robocop. I I think that was probably it wasn't an action movie, but it was an action oriented movie. Correct?
Sara:Yes. It was. No. It's an action movie. It's a full on, like Okay.
Eric:Hyper violent action movie. That before she lost the part, Stephanie was doing some workouts, bodybuilding for that Yeah. And when you're doing exercises like that, even though you're not necessarily losing weight and she doesn't have a whole lot of fat to lose to begin with No. But what she does is being converted to muscle, and it does change the shape of your face a little bit. Because to me, her her in this episode, as compared to, like, Bond's, the the lines of her face are a little more angular and a little more distinct. And and I don't mean that in a negative way. I mean, I I think that's good. But it's it it definitely, to me, has a I can see a difference in her face from from this episode to last season. And then, again, I I love her hair like that. I also not a big fan of dangly earrings normally, but tasteful dangly earrings,
Sara:I think.
Eric:And these these were almost a little bit too too much, but they they were okay.
Sara:Yeah. No.
Eric:I I normally see her in dangly earrings.
Sara:Yeah. Well, that's probably because a lot of the time her hair is down, and you wouldn't really see them anyway because of, like, she has a lot of hair.
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:But yeah. No. I agree with you, you know, with all of that because she probably was trying to get more muscle definition. There was a there's a lot of, stunts in that movie. So Mhmm. And it is a shame that she lost the part, but
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:It is what it is. And also, they're they're older than they were when they started. She I don't wanna say she had baby fat, but her babe her her face had sort of a more youthful look to it as does did his. Like, you can definitely see a change in his in his face from season 5 and season 1. Season 1, he looked a lot more I don't know. Like, just like a like a kid in his twenties, and now he looks like a man in his thirties. Like, there's very much a distinctive difference there. That's not necessarily about bodybuilding or anything like that. It's just aging up. Right? So but I think she'd I aside from the bangs, which I'm kind of not sold on, I love everything else about the outfit and the look. Mhmm. So 100% agree. We see her outside talking to the hotel manager. They shake hands, and then we hear Tony call her name. She turns, and he says he just heard about her husband and asked if there's anything he can do to help. Before she can respond, we hear a clatter. And to the right, we see Mildred has arrived, and her luggage is being dropped on the ground.
Eric:Okay. Who is running the agency? Who's they're minding the store? I mean, once again, they've totally abandoned the office, closed the doors, turned off the phone. How do they stay in business?
Sara:I maybe Fred took over. Maybe they got the friend of the day to run the shop while they're out. I don't know. So, yeah, Laura is surprised. She goes over to talk to Mildred. And okay, so this woman, Conchita, what is her purpose in this episode?
Eric:Comedy relief.
Sara:Like, it she is useless, and I don't normally like to say that about a character, but, like, she has no purpose to the storyline. She has no purpose to anything, really. Mean, there's there's it feels like she's here for filler. And it's not even good filler because do I care whether Tony is going to take her to The States? Or it feels like he she's literally there just so he can explain his plan to somebody. Because otherwise, we wouldn't get the exposition that we get about how he's trying to prove their marriage is phony and then blah blah blah blah blah.
Eric:Like, Of course, that could have been done with a with a one-sided phone call.
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:He's talking to 1 of his bosses and says, hey. This is my plan and blah blah blah blah. And, oh, I've gotta go. Somebody's coming.
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:There you go.
Sara:And, I mean, even the hiding her under the bed stuff later on is it feels so pointless. Like, it doesn't the stakes are so low. Who cares if they find her? Steele finds her.
Eric:Annoying. Right?
Sara:She's irritating as hell. Like and, honestly, knowing what we know about his character as we go and I'm not saying that people love his character. They don't. But I don't see what he would see in Conchita if he's given who he is, given what we later find out about him as a character. He does seem to have at least some moral code regardless of whether or not we like it. There is a moral code there. He does seem to be a little bit more mature. Although he
Eric:he seems to be stringing Conchita along.
Sara:True. But, like, could you stand her for 3 years? Like Well,
Eric:that that's not my point. My point is that for a guy who supposedly has moral character, that's pretty disreputable. That's pretty No.
Sara:I don't mean that. Well, Steele did the same thing with a bunch of his
Eric:Well, yeah. But it's okay. Fine.
Sara:Granted. Let's face it. Fine. He and Tony aren't that different when it comes to women that Love them
Eric:and leave them.
Sara:Yeah. Exactly. But when I say moral code, mean, in terms of the fact that he we find it later on how he's trying to find this the mole that, you know, he seems very protective of the men that he lost in whatever operation that went wrong, etcetera. Right? There does seem to be that he has I don't know. He just seems more like he has more substance to him and that she would drive him crazy and I could see it as a as a momentary flame, but he they've been she they talked about how they've been together for 3 years. How would you be able to stand her for 3 years? Have I tossed her off the balcony.
Eric:I don't think I could have stood her for 3 weeks.
Sara:For 3 minutes. Like, she's just Antonio. Hello. Like, I just wanna hurt her. That's true.
Eric:See her at a party and get her just run the other way. I've never even met her, but I don't like her anyway.
Sara:So I don't see the she's like Janice on Friends. I don't know if you ever watched that show, but there's a a character named Janice who Chandler dates, and she's got this irritating, high pitched nasally voice. So anytime she sees him, oh my god. Like, that's how she sounds. And he spends a good eventually spends a good chunk of the series trying to get
Eric:rid of her. To any of her friends from New York or The Bronx or New Jersey that Yeah.
Sara:That's how she and then at 1 point, he even gets on a flight to Yemen just to avoid her. Tells her, like, he tries to break up with her. He tells her he's moving to Yemen, and she she shows up at the airport to say goodbye to him. So he's forced to buy himself a ticket, and then she insists on seeing him to the gate. So you see him standing there, like, guess some go to Yemen. Like and, I mean, I don't blame him. I would go to Yemen to avoid her. Tony, I don't know what you're doing here. I really don't. Like, this is baffling. So, anyway, here she comes. She she's too much makeup and hairspray, and she sidles up to Tony, and she asks if he knows where the adult pool is. I guess there's there's an adult pool and a kiddie pool. Otherwise, adult pool sounds very different in my head. But, Yeah.
Eric:What was going there?
Sara:He tells her, and she smiles flirtatiously and says, gracias. He says to Nada, and she walks away with her hips swaying. Laura, meanwhile, asks Mildred what she's doing there. Mildred says she thought she would come down and straighten out the travel plans and maybe mix a little business with pleasure. The last time Mildred did that, she ran up a huge, casino debt.
Eric:Oh, tells her to do that keeps her busy.
Sara:Keep her out of the casino. That's right. Laura tells her it will be all business and that the police think mister Steele killed Norman Keys, and then Mildred goes, good for the boss. And, honestly, I'm not really offended that Mildred believes he's capable of that because her reaction is so funny. I can go with it. Like, it's that's fine. It's like, good for him. Oh, she says what the audience is thinking. You know? Someone needs to. Yeah. Exactly. Laura tells her to use the hotel phone and get a list of all the insurance cases that Keys was working on, adding that they need suspects fast. Mildred smiles and says she's useful already. Laura encourages her go, and she turns to Tony asking if the offer of help is still good. He tells her, you name it, and she asks how he is at acrobatics. K? Outside a hotel room, we see a guard standing there. To the side, we see Tony pretend to have an accident by driving the hotel card into the wall, and I'm I I have no problem watching him drive his car into a wall. No. That's that's fine with me. The guard rushes off to see what happens, and
Eric:Laura rushes I I don't think I'm I'm sorry. I I I don't think the guard would have done that. I mean Fair. You just when when you got a job guarding something, you you you stay there. You guard it.
Sara:And Well
Eric:You know, even if you don't want to, you stay there and you guard it until you release it.
Sara:It's a crime scene. It's not Fort Knox. I mean, I don't think he Well He he's only standing there because it's crime scene. I don't really think it he he probably saw it as a pretty low priority assignment.
Eric:Yeah. But you still you still gotta stay there because that's let's let's put it this way. The consequences to him personally of not staying there and something happening, I don't think we wanna talk about that.
Sara:Fair enough. Not at all. The guard asked Tony if he's okay as Laura picks the lock. And Tony tells him to get medical help fast. The guard runs away, and Laura enters Keezy's room. She gets to work right away opening a suitcase. Tony comes in, and she closes it thinking that she's caught. When she sees it's Tony, he tells her she picks a mean lock. She opens the suitcase and begins looking through it saying her uncle was very determined delivery man. Tony says that something tells her that, tells him that she's not your ordinary housewife. Laura says she's just a girl trying to have a honeymoon, which is a little difficult when your husband's behind bars. True. Yeah. She begins to look through another bag. Tony asked, isn't this slightly illegal? And Laura says, no. It's very illegal.
Eric:Good line.
Sara:Ethics. Ethics? I like that they're just embracing this at this point. Sure. They're not even wearing their crime clothes, but, hey, I'll forgive it for now. Yeah.
Eric:And they're doing it in broad daylight. Yeah. So
Sara:Yeah. Yeah. She says it's very illegal, but the hotel manager told her this the the police hadn't been there yet. Tony asked if there's something specific they're looking for, and the police hadn't been there yet. They're in Norman Keyes' room, which is not where he died, which makes this more confusing. Yeah. But, hey, Laura says something. Anything to prove that Remington didn't kill a Keys? She calls him Remington here, and I realize she's doing it because Tony is there, and she has to maintain but if she can say it there, why can't she say it to him?
Eric:Well, and not only that, but when Tony questioned her about calling him mister Steeda before, she said, look. It's you know?
Sara:Force of habit.
Eric:There's this professional relationship here that yeah. She said force of habit, but but she explained that it's the professional relationship. They've been working together for all these years, and,
Sara:you know,
Eric:it's the habit when you are in public. Well, she's kind of in public here too, but, yeah, it's it's a little inconsistent.
Sara:So, yeah, it just feels weird that she was able to say it here, but not to him. Yeah. Tony also
Eric:And not only that, but to him, she says, your name sucks. Why don't you have a real name?
Sara:Right? Like, oh, you mean the 1 that you gave him? The 1 that you how you named him after a typewriter and a football team?
Eric:Like Yeah.
Sara:Don't don't mock the name lady when you made it up. That's right. Tony over by the table tells her that he she that she doesn't wanna see this. She asks him what it is, and Tony says, a letter written by Keys to someone at Vigilance Insurance. He reads it, and it says, and I'm more convinced than ever that Steele may try to silence me. Laura goes over and says, let me see that. She picks up the letter and starts reading it. Tony asks why Keys was so sure their marriage was phony, and Laura says that he was cracked. Tony points out the letter says he was sure he could prove it, and she tells him it's a long story and to check the door as she goes into the bathroom. We see Tony begin to look into Laura's purse, so, obviously, that kinda gives more of of that side of Tony. We know he's up to something too. And while in the bathroom, she says, isn't this interesting? He goes over to the bathroom and asks what? She says, Keith's checked in alone. He says, yeah. She holds up a brush in her hands and asks what a bald man is doing with a hairbrushing. I gotta give it to Tony. Maybe he was an optimist? Yeah. That's a funny line, and he delivers it very she says that he has a very warped sense of humor, just like someone else she knows. He apologizes, and she continues saying that this proves there was someone else down here, someone who knew Keyes well enough to be invited into his suite. She pulls a hair out, saying someone with long blonde hair. So we then switch. We see Tony walking into his hotel room. And again, this is the this literally her entire purpose is for this scene, which is so ridiculous. The moment he closes the door, we hear Antonio. He comes into the bedroom and finds the woman from earlier on his bed in a bathing suit. And this is the kind of bathing suit that you buy that you never intend to actually go near water in.
Eric:Yeah. It's not a it's not a it's not attractive. That's for sure.
Sara:Well, I don't
Eric:I don't even show. Yeah.
Sara:It's show suit. It's meant to sit on the beach because like you look at her hair. She's got so she has an enough hairspray in her hair to put a new hole in the ozone layer. There's no way she's going swimming in
Eric:that. Mhmm.
Sara:It's literally just to, you know, here here are my assets and and not really all that attractive. So but, yeah, she's on the bed in a bathing suit. He asked what she's doing there, and she pouts and says she waited for him by the pool. Irritated, he asks, why isn't she in Mexico City? She smiles and gets to her knees, shaking her assets and saying she wanted to celebrate with him. Tony says there's nothing to celebrate. Confused, she tells him when he called last night, she said everything was he said everything was perfecto. Tony admits he knows, but that was before mister Steele killed someone. He takes off his shirt and dries himself. She asked if that's what he calls a glitch, and he says yes, but it's nothing that he can't work his way out of. She crawls towards him, asks if they're still going to The States. He says, I gotta wonder, was he ever planning on taking her to The States? Or is that
Eric:think so. I think I think he was just giving her a line.
Sara:Yeah. It just feels weird that he'd wanna keep her around for 3. Like, he can't seem he doesn't
Eric:The only thing I can think of, and it just came to me, is that he's been doing some job for whatever agency he's working for, whatever organization he's working for because there's so many layers. You know? He's he's maybe he's working for the CIA, but he's he's pretending to be this with this agency, and and as being part of that pretend agency job, he's pretending to do something else. It's it's it's all very complicated with multiple layers, but it could be that she was involved in some manner in some case that he was working with. And so he was using her in that case, and she just won't let go and won't take the the hint that, hey. I was just using you. You were, you know, you you were a useful idiot.
Sara:Yeah. True. Because it really does seem like he just can't stand her and that he he's not even the slightest bit happy to see her. So yeah.
Eric:I know.
Sara:It's just bizarre. But she then says because she crawls towards him asking if they're still 1 of states. He says, yes, but not to buy any plane tickets. And then she stands up and says that for 3 years, she has followed him all over South America. And okay That sounds like shocking to your point. Yeah. Like that she followed him, but it also seems like he at least on some level wanted her there because otherwise, you would it's not that hard to ditch somebody and to to hide. He's he's a freaking spy. You're telling me you can't get away from little miss hairspray? Come on. I mean, if he's
Eric:if he's tied to a a certain geographical area because of the job, then, yeah, that might be the case.
Sara:Well, she says all over South America. South America is pretty large as a continent as far as continents go. So I don't
Eric:know. Well, but obviously, okay. Then let's take what she says there. He was, let's say he started out in Mexico and then he went to somewhere south south of there, Argentina or Venezuela, Venezuela, wherever. And then she followed him and then he went somewhere else and she followed him. So he has been leaving her. He hasn't been trying to get away from her apparently. I think it's
Sara:kind to imply that that she was with him, that he just had to keep moving and she willingly went with him. Like, I followed you around. But either way
Eric:Well, I I think the the the idea that this implies that it that it was willing on his part might be a stretch.
Sara:Either like, if he really wanted to disappear, he should have been able to do that. That's all I'm saying. Yeah.
Eric:Or or he he could have been able to disappear her.
Sara:Yeah. That too.
Eric:And I don't hotline, I'd like to call and make a reservation.
Sara:Don't think anybody would blame him, frankly. But she asked if he thinks she only did it so that he would take her to The States. And Tony says, yes. And she asked if did it did it did I ever threaten to leave because you weren't a big shot in the immigration department anymore? Tony says every day. She says, and did I ever ask why your bosses were so annoyed with you that they sent you to all these dirty little towns in South America? And Tony is, like, putting on another shirt, as he says, every other day. She approaches him and says she's been his loyal secretary as well as his faithful companions. And that implies that they've been together, but why?
Eric:Well, hate to say implies that it was it started out at or was maybe initially a business relationship. She was the secretary and then she she got the hots for him, and and he maybe used that to his advantage and Yeah. Was backfired on him or something. I don't know.
Sara:She pulls back and tells him not to bring up the bullfighter again. He was just showing her where he had been gored.
Eric:Is that kinda, like, come up and see my etchings?
Sara:Yeah. Hey, do you wanna see my scarf from yeah. Tony loses patience with her, and this is where you find out her name is Conchita, and he tells her to go home. She pleads with him, begging him to tell her that he hasn't screwed up again, and she says she couldn't bear another disappointment. Tony walks away saying, as soon as he can prove Steele's marriage is a fraud, he will be back and solid with his bosses, and they will and they will be across the Rio Grande. And, this whole scene, that's literally the purpose of it for him to say those words so that we know, okay. This is what he's trying to do. You're right. It could have been done with a phone call. Satisfied with this answer, she throws herself into his arms and they kiss. She tells him to hurry as she's already packed her clothes and they are getting wrinkled. Oh.
Eric:Too
Sara:bad. Tony stops her excitement saying that 1st he has to get Steele out of jail because if that doesn't happen, they can kiss Disneyland goodbye. She smiles and backs away saying he never told her what he thought of her new bathing suit. She bought it just for him. He smiles and says, the material is nice. Sure. She asks if if he knows the best feature. He says no, and she begins to remove it smiling seductively saying, it comes off so easily, and he grins. So he's not not he's not a don't I don't get it. I don't see the appeal.
Eric:I hate to say that It's physical.
Sara:I hate to say that he can do better because
Eric:Yeah. But, you know, it may be that that's that's what he could get at the time. And Yeah.
Sara:It could be.
Eric:You know? It Bigger's can be lasts both 2 minutes of it. And Yeah.
Sara:I think 2 is generous. But, anyway, at the jail, Mildred comes to visit. She tells Steele he looks awful. Says, you're so haggard. Yeah. You're so haggard and pasty, and your right eye is twitching. Oh, he sarcastically says, nice to see you too. And he asked what she's doing in Mexico. She says she came to see miss Holt and then cracks herself and says, missus Steele. Does she not know? Like or, like, does she genuinely believe this marriage is legal? Because she was the 1 on the boat that says we're past the 3 mile limit. This is legal as hell. So I wonder if they have left her out.
Eric:Yeah. I think I don't think she's in the loop on this 1. That's crappy. If she is, she would probably still go along with Strahd.
Sara:But, like, that's crappy. That's a crappy thing to do to Mildred. But, yes. They they kept her out of the the loop for so long with Steel's identity, and now they're keeping her out of the loop with the marriage. There's no reason to. No. She she knows everything that that Laura knows, and she's smart enough to realize that this would be necessary. Like, that just seems crappy after everything they've been through.
Eric:But Yeah.
Sara:She tells him that she asked her to dig into all the cases that Keyes was working on. Steele says, and Mildred tells him only case he was working on was his. Steele growing, knowing that that's not good. Mildred says it gets worse. Keys raised his insurance to 1000000 bucks. He said he was afraid of what Steele might do to him. Steele sarcastically says, that's great, to Mildred, and thanks her for stopping by. Poor Mildred. She says, oh, come on, boss. Don't confuse the message with the messenger, which fair. He apologizes and begins to pace, saying that someone made it appear as if he was following keys from the Hotel Della Mora to Las Jadas. He tells her they never saw keys at the Hotel Della Mora as they weren't even supposed to be there in the 1st place. And Mildred says, oh, that reminds me. She found out who switched their travel plans. And this is this is painful. Oh. Steele asks, why didn't you tell me? And he calls for the captain. He He tells Mildred, if someone changed those plans, it proves that he wasn't following Keyes. Mildred attempts to protest as the captain walks over, and Steele tells him that Senor Krebs knows who's trying to frame him for the murder of Norman Keyes. He tells Mildred, tell the man. She hesitates. He says, go ahead. Tell the man who switched our plans. And miserably, Mildred says, you did. Steele doesn't even hear her. He claps his hands and says, you see? Before realizing what she just told him. Looks And then he says to Mildred, I switched the plans? And she says, that's what the travel agent told her. The captain tells Mildred she's just supplied the last piece of the puzzle. Mildred does not look happy. She says, I did. The captain says that she just proved that his behavior was premeditated, which allows them to up the charges from manslaughter to 1st degree murder. Slow clap, Mildred. Slow clap. Done. Well done. Yeah. He thanks Mildred and walks away. Upset, she says, tried to warn you. And he, thankfully, he's he doesn't get angry with her. He realizes that he kinda screwed up here. He jumped the gun. He says, I know you did. He says, you gotta get me out of this place or else he's carne morte. She repeats the phrase and confused, and he says dead meat.
Eric:Now all of a sudden, he can speak Spanish again.
Sara:Right? Right? And this is okay. So this is where the scene is that they cut. Okay? Okay. Because the next scene in the in the filmed version is where she breaks him out. Right? In the script, it says interior jailhouse corridor day, and we see and it says where the captain and Mildred are confidentially conversing. And the captain says, this is a fantastic plan, miss Krebs. We've known all along, senior Steele could not have murdered senior Keyes. Yet the evidence is nevertheless convincing, and the real murderer we know is still at large. And then Mildred says, that's all the more reason why we need your help. Mr. Steele can't possibly help you ferret out who's framing him if he's sitting in jail. We'll pay for the damages. And then the captain says, I have no doubts about that. The biggest problem would be afterwards. I can't let my men know I allowed the breakout because there's a possibility that whoever's framing senior Steele will know it's a setup. That means my men will think it's a real escape, and I can't guarantee senior steel's safety. She says, well, he doesn't have much choice. We'll just have to take her chances. And then he says, if he isn't successful quickly, I'll have to recapture him myself. She says, understood. That seems I'm glad they cut it because in literally in the scene before when she says that Steele switched the travel plans, he gets giddy with the idea of upping the charge to 1st degree murder. And then in the very next scene, he's like, oh, yeah. We knew it wasn't him all along, but we couldn't really do much about it. That feels
Eric:Yeah. It doesn't it doesn't fly.
Sara:A bit like, if they wanted to keep that plan as part of the the the plan, they would have have to have changed that scene previous to it with Mildred get saying you changed them and and him looking a little bit more reluctant. I'm sorry, mister Steele. This this looks instead, he's like, oh, it's Christmas. I get to change it to a 1st degree murder. He rushes off to do like, it just I get why they cut it. Probably for time, but it also seems a bit silly that the captain would be like, yeah. Sure. You can pull the entire wall out of my jail cell to break your boss out. Cool. Go for it. So, yeah, that that got cut. But originally, it was supposed to be that the captain was in on the breakout. And it does seem a little silly that they can break him out that easily, so I guess maybe that was the purpose for it. But yeah.
Eric:See, they put him in the 1 cell that was designed to have a breakaway
Sara:wall. Breakaway wall. At the jail, we see Steele sitting and waiting as Mildred's voice can be heard calling his name from outside the window. He stands up as she passes him a rope through the window, admitting she's a little scared. He begins to wrap it around the bars and tells her not to worry. She's doing just fine. Steele asks where the truck is, and she says, what truck? He says, the truck that's supposed to be at the other end of this rope. She winces and says, well, couldn't exactly get a truck. He asks, what exactly did she get? The camera pans to a riverboat cruise with
Eric:people dancing. I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna call bovine excrement on that 1 because, you know, you you you tie up a boat to a dock. Where's that boat gonna go? It's not gonna go anywhere. Why? Because it doesn't have enough power to overcome the the the dock and pull pull the dock apart, but it has enough power to pull a wall apart?
Sara:No. Uh-uh. I'm I'm not disagreeing with you, but I think it probably could pull a dock if it was actually if the motor was on. Like, Like, when you tie a boat up to a dock, the motor's turned off. Right? It's just gonna float
Eric:over. But I don't I don't think you I don't think they would design a dock that would allow allow it to be broken apart if if somebody pulls away under power. Might damage it, but it it would I don't think it would tear it apart. Fair enough. And I don't think I don't think a boat could have enough enough power to pull a wall down.
Sara:Oh, no. I I definitely don't think it would pull the wall down. That's just silly. Yeah. He asked if she couldn't find but the the funny part about the riverboat cruise is you can hear the dancing in the 1 time. Yeah. This song just keeps coming back to haunt them, and I love it. He he says, couldn't you find something a tad less conspicuous?
Eric:Tell him what
Sara:it's been
Eric:funnier is if if, 1 was on their thing.
Sara:Feelings. Feelings. Mildred says she doesn't very well. They hear a noise, and he shushes her. She ducks, and he places his red shirt over his arm and pulls puts his arm on the windowsill to hide the rope. The guard looks at him suspiciously, and the rope makes a noise as it stretches when the ship moves. He yawns loudly to cover it up. The guard eventually walks away. As he does, we see the rope tighten and the entire wind, like yeah. No. Creating a huge hole. The guard returns, blowing his whistle, and the other guards rush in, and we see Mildred waiting for Steele in the grass as he rushes over to her. She asks him, now what? As the guards begin to open fire, and he says, run. She's easy for you to say. We see them run into what looks to be like a bush type area. Right? Mildred is not keeping up very well. They take refuge behind a big bush, she apologizes, saying her puppies are pooped. He says that he's been thinking, if no 1 else held a grudge against Keyes and he didn't kill him, then who stood to gain from his death? Mildred says, well, this this is no time for 20 questions, asking him who. He reminds her of the life insurance policy of 1000000 dollars. Mildred picks up this line of thinking, realizing he means a beneficiary. He nods and says, that's all they've got. He tells her he will decoy the police while she goes back to Las Jardas and gets on the phone. She nods, and he blows her a kiss as he runs the other way. Mildred watches from behind the bush as a guard walks right into her line of sight but doesn't see her. Steele whistles to get their attention, and they fire at him. Pretty dumb. I mean, it's 1 thing to decoy them. It's another to make yourself like literally a target. Yeah. They're shooting at you. They're they could hit you and kill you.
Eric:Yeah. He could have accomplished the same thing just by, you know, making some noise, but not standing up and waving at
Sara:him exactly. I'm over here. I'm definitely not a decoy. Follow me. Yeah. Really? So, yeah, we we see he they fire heat and start to chase him through the jungle. Sensing her chance, Mildred comes out from her hiding place and goes the other way. We then see the bus come around the corner, and Steele jumps on the back of it. The police have blocked the road, so they stop the bus. 2 of them get on the bus. The other 2 begin to walk around it. The 1 guard looks under the bus, continues to walk towards the back where Steele supposedly is hiding, but when they get back there, he's not there. He walks back up to the door, gives the all clear gesture, and motions to allow the bus to go forward. No. No. She notes that it shows no phone calls. He ate alone. He didn't even buy anyone a drink. There's nothing to indicate he had any company.
Eric:Which is not true. Which is not true because he sent over a bottle of champagne to their stable.
Sara:That's true. Yeah. That's well but, I mean, it would look like he just purchased a bottle of champagne. It wouldn't necessarily show that he sent it elsewhere. Right?
Eric:Well, but he I'm guessing that he would have just bought it because you usually can't bring in outside, beverages, outside food.
Sara:Right.
Eric:So he would have bought it from the hotel restaurant, and he would have probably just put it on my bill. Yeah. And so why doesn't it show up on his bill? The bill is fake. Oh, I don't know.
Sara:Yeah. Good point. I didn't even think of that. There's nothing so Tony points out he rented a car, a red Topaz. That might be worth checking out. Laura asked if the car would still be there, and the manager says it's not something he would take with him. Yeah. Really? It's fair. He said, I like how the manager is kinda snarky.
Eric:I'm like Yeah. I I like the manager.
Sara:He stands up and tells him to follow him. Laura tells Tony that for an archaeologist, he's not 0.5 bad detective. Tony says it's the same job, just different tools. And he's not wrong, actually. Historians, people who work in archaeology, things like that, they're literally looking for evidence that tells them how a a past society lives. Like, it's it I mean, he's lying about being an archaeologist, but still. Outside, we see the car in the parking lot with someone on sorry, unloading luggage onto a motorized hotel cart. Laura asked if that's what she thinks it is. Tony says if you think it's a red topaz, you'd be right. Fernando says he will go and see if it has the same license plate. Laura tells him there's no need as the hotel cart thingy has a blonde woman on the back. Laura asked Tony what he wants to bet that she's missing a hairbrush. Inside Key's room, we see we see the hotel attendant drop off the woman's luggage, and Laura comes in and checks the tags on the suitcase calling out to miss Scribner. The blonde woman comes in, and then Laura introduce introduces herself as Tracy Lord of guest relation relations. So she is not Myrtle Crockens. She's gonna be Tracy Lord. Yeah. She says she wanted to welcome her personally to Las Jatas. The blonde says that's very kind, and she says she would also like her to accept a small token of pleasure at having her with them. She snaps her fingers and calls out for Manuel. And I I I gotta like Tony being sort of put into this, like, indentured servant position. It's it's kinda fun to watch. Right? Like, see him enter, his face obscured by what looks to be a cheese basket of some kind. She says, on delay. He gets to wear the bathroom. Miss Scribner asked where he's going, and Laura says it's best to keep the cheese in the bathroom. Like, okay. Laura?
Eric:I'm sorry. I don't even drink water out of a faucet from a bathroom. Definitely wouldn't eat any cheese. It's been stored there.
Sara:If you're gonna try to pull this crap, like you're gonna sneak in there a basket with bathroom supplies would make more sense especially since it's a hotel. They often provide shampoos soaps, whatever. Right? Just grab a bunch from 1 of the other rooms, put it in the basket, and have them go into the bathroom and say, here, you know, here's some complimentary shampoos and bath soaps. Cheese in the bathroom. They have
Eric:those already there when you you check-in because the room has been cleaned up and made up from the previous tenant. And so
Sara:Yeah. But she could say they forgot or that the, you know, the cleaners didn't leave them any, and she's just rectifying a mistake, whatever. It makes a hell of a lot more sense than it's you should store your cheese next to the toilet. Yeah. I would have some questions about guest relations if I were staying at that hotel.
Eric:Well, you know, they they do say that cheese is created with bacteria.
Sara:Yeah. But there's there's only so much bacteria I want in my in my, you know,
Eric:digestive system. Of bacteria.
Sara:Right? Like, this is I don't want toilet cheese. No. Thank you. Oh,
Eric:bad image out of my head.
Sara:Sorry. I sorry, everybody, for the image of toilet cheese, but Laura started it in my defense. She's the 1 that tried to claim it's cooler to keep your cheese next to the camp.
Eric:It's cool. It's hip.
Sara:It's admin. Yeah. Miss Scribner, like a normal sane person, says she's never heard that. And Laura tells her that they're in the jungle, and she knows what jungles can do to cheese. We've talked about how Laura's not great with undercover.
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:Case in point. Right here. She says on delay again and tries to distract her by asking if there's, if she's there for business or pleasure. We see Tony in the room.
Eric:Speaker Have a refrigerator.
Sara:1 would think again, this is why the basket should have had bathroom supplies and not fricking cheese. Yeah. Sorry.
Eric:I I just that just popped out. I'm sorry.
Sara:It's just no. You're 100% correct. It this is this was a stupid idea. Like, if you're gonna have him deliver something to the bathroom, it should be something that, you know, belongs to bathroom thing. Oh, so, yeah. We see Tony going to the bathroom and he sets the cheese and fruit bowl down and and there's fruit in there too. Sorry.
Eric:Well, I'm sorry. It's just another bad image. Oh, you know, they are Mexico that's kind of on the edge of South America and South America's famous for their bananas and we won't go there.
Sara:Yep. Did you know that bananas are actually a berry? I know.
Eric:I was thinking Nova Scotia, but I'm sorry.
Sara:No. They're considered a berry. Like, they're not considered in the in the fruit family. Yeah.
Eric:It's it's very Well, tomatoes are fruit. It's not really a vegetable.
Sara:I know. That's weird too. Anyway, so, yeah, outside, miss Grimner says her uncle was murdered there last night. Laura says she's sorry and asks that was your uncle. And, again, if she were really guest relations, she would know that.
Eric:Well, not necessarily. But I do you really believe do we really believe does anybody really believe that she's his niece?
Sara:Oh, not a chance. But, I mean
Eric:I'm I'm I'm I'm thinking something else. But
Sara:But, like, prostitute? Because I'm sorry. Nobody would sleep with him willingly.
Eric:Nobody. Well, I I was thinking a very, very mentally ill girlfriend because, yeah, nobody would do it willingly, but unless they were mentally ill. No. But I mean, I I don't believe she's a niece. She I don't know what she is, but I I'm not buying that she's
Sara:a niece. I'm thinking con artist or somebody that, you know, maybe worked at vigilance insurance that he kind of roped into this. Who knows? Maybe he promised her a cut of the money, and she's just as morally and, you know, iffy as he is. Yeah. That's I that's what I would assume. But, yeah. She says that was your uncle. Miss Scrivner says she just came to take his body home and Laura asked if she came straight from the airport as Tony opens a piece of luggage in the bathroom. Inside, we see the spot for the missing hairbrush. So she was there beforehand, but now she's bring officially bringing her luggage. And yet she was dumb enough to leave the brush? That just seems kind
Eric:of weird. Apparently. I mean, that's that's what it says. Says it
Sara:right there. Outside, Laura tells her she's so sorry for her loss. And if there's anything she can do, miss Scribner says, well, there is 1 thing, leave. Laura says, of course. And calls for Manuel saying, on delay. She asked miss Scribner if there's anything else she needs to if she need any if there's anything else she needs to just call. And she says, wait a minute. Don't all the workers here wear white? Tony kind of freezes. And she grabs him, stupido. Blanca. Blanca. Again, I like seeing her abuse Tony and, like, call him stupid. That's that's That's fun. Makes me happy. That's fun. Yeah. She pushes him out and then turns back to miss Scribner telling her, good help is so hard to find. Outside the room, Tony says, nice save. And Laura tells him that he he makes a great welcome wagon. Tony tells her the lady's a liar. He says that she herself he says she has herself a suspect. And Laura says, now all she has to do is convert her into a murderer.
Eric:Inside It's just a real simple process. You you you Yeah. Yeah. Gold alchemy. You just
Sara:It's like, yeah. You add salt and some spices and poof, instant murder Or something. We get a scene switch, and we're inside Laura and Steel's room. And we see Mildred thinking sorry, thanking someone on the phone. I can't read my own notes, apparently. Laura and Tony come in, and Mildred asked where she's been. She's seen more of Mexico than Pancho Villa is trying to find her. She looks at Tony suspiciously. She asked who he is, and he says, Tony. Before he can say anymore, Conchita appears outside the pool and makes a beckoning gesture. And Okay, like I just The joke has played itself out before it even begins Because again he he has no reason to try to like hide her as long as he just says oh irritating ex girlfriend. She won't go away. Excuse me. Let me get rid of her.
Eric:Well, the the only reason he does have any reason only the only the only reason he has any reason yeah. That yeah. That made sense. It just didn't it didn't sound right when I 1st said it. The only reason he has any reason to hide her is because she might spill the beans on what is
Sara:True. And this is another thing. Why is she why? Why is she there? He told her last night, I need to prove it that Steele is innocent and I need to do this job in order for you to go to The States. And instead of her just being like, cool, I'm gonna sit back while you do your thing. She's showing up at every opportunity and and getting in the way, actively getting in the way.
Eric:Yeah. She And if this paid off by eventually showing her to be some sort of operative for some other organization that was working against him, it would've made sense. But yeah. No. It's just it's just
Sara:She's just an idiot.
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:Like, we see at the end when he basically she tries to I'm getting ahead of myself, but she tries to usher that ultimate or you give him that ultimatum and he's just like, meh. He walks away. She she's just I don't know. Is she that horny? Like, what is going on here that she can't just chill out and wait for him to do the job?
Eric:Just ask for a fruit basket.
Sara:Right? Yeah. It's in the toilet.
Eric:Nova Scotia or or Saskatchewan or whatever it was.
Sara:Newfoundland. Newfoundland.
Eric:Newfoundland. Yeah. There we go. Yeah.
Sara:Yeah. Mildred asked him if he comes up with a last name and he blurts out Roselli and then asks if Laura minds if he washes up. She tells him to help himself and he rushes off to get rid of Conchita. Before he can, though, Mildred grabs his arm and asks if he wants to know her name. Tony says, yes, but he wants to be clean when he hears it. And he tells her not to go away. I like that. Once he's in the other room, Mildred asks, where'd you find him? And Laura tells her, in the jungle. She asks, what was he doing? Swinging from a vine? And Laura, as a matter of fact, yes.
Eric:Of course, Mildred didn't mean it in the Tarzan sense. She meant it in the ape sense.
Sara:She has clocked Tony. Oh, yeah. What like, just zeroing in, like, I know who you are, and I know what she wants. And I'm gonna cock block you the entire way. And it's actually, like, she's doing her she's been doing this to poor Steele all throughout the series accidentally. And she's like, I was made for this. You're not getting near her, sir.
Eric:I was made for blocking you, baby. Exactly.
Sara:Because she says Mildred says, does the boss know you're hanging out with a road company, Tarzan? And Laura tries to ask when she's found out about Keyes, but Mildred continues with the guilt trip saying, while he's languishing away in a Mexican jail, not strictly true, but k.
Eric:Point made. Metaphorically speaking.
Sara:You know? Yeah. Laura interrupts and tells her to stick to the business at hand. Meanwhile, over at the patio door, Tony opens it and demands to know what she's doing there. She presses herself against him. I'm bored. Begging him to entertain her. Oh my what is wrong with this woman?
Eric:I think there's a word for it. Nymphomania.
Sara:Does it start with I was gonna say, does it start with an n? Yes. Because, like, and Here's the thing. I said before, Jack Scalia Scalia, however you pronounce his name. Mhmm. He's not unattractive. He's he's not my type, but I can see why some people might find him attractive.
Eric:Mhmm.
Sara:He's not so attractive that you can't pry yourself off of him. I'm sorry, but that's just
Eric:no. Maybe he's got other other
Sara:assets. If he's is he that good? I mean, something's going on here because she apparently can't spend I
Eric:don't what they say. Size matters.
Sara:It doesn't though. But either way,
Eric:let's people in Texas. Grabs her. Wait. I'm just you remember passes. Do you do you remember comp USA? It it's
Sara:an old Yeah.
Eric:They opened their 1st location up here in Alaska, and I was hired, and I was 1 of the the people who helped open the store. And they sent a guy up here from their corporate offices to do the training, and their corporate offices were in Dallas. And if there's anybody that is more gung ho Texas than a Texan, It's an adopted Texan. This guy was originally from Australia, but he I know. Texas all the way, and Texas this, Texas that, Texas the other thing. And after about 2 days because it was, like, a 3 or 4 day training. After a couple days, 1 of the guys in in the back raised his hand and said, you know, if you took Alaska and you cut it into 2 equal parts, Texas would be the 3rd largest state in the country. After that,
Sara:we didn't hear a
Eric:thing about Texas.
Sara:I mean, if you guys really wanna be get into the size thing, Canada's the 2nd largest country in the world. And if Russia keeps shrinking, soon we'll be 1st. I'm just saying.
Eric:Anyway.
Sara:Anyhoo. So she's begging him to entertain her. He grabs her and takes her outside, telling her to put it in neutral and runs back inside as he sees Steele trying to climb over the wall onto the deck. He races through the house with conchita giggling as if it's a game. Yes. I hate this woman. Hate You
Eric:know, it just occurred to me. She's got the mental capacity and intellectual level of a of a what?
Sara:Oh, to suck. She has the mental capacity and
Eric:a suck. I'll I'll give her a little more credit than that. 5 year old.
Sara:Like, she's just and I I know we don't like Tony. I hate her more. I hate her more. Okay? I do. Because she's just so dumb.
Eric:She makes Tony look good.
Sara:She, unfortunately, yes. That's the problem. Because I'm watching her and him, and I'm like, you can do better. And if I'm saying that to the to the guy that's, like, the most hated character in the fandom, what does that say? God. So he tells her to get under the bed and stay put, and she seductively purrs. Are you sure you mean are you sure you mean under the bed? Also, why does she do it? I would just be like, screw you, dude, and I would leave. Instead, she gets down there, and she stays there. She stays there.
Eric:Well, maybe she thinks it's part of the game, and that will get him you know, she's gonna do this for him, and so he'll do something for her later. Gross.
Sara:He tells her to get down and adds not a peep to which she goes, peep. You're right. 5 year old. Because that's exactly what a 5 year old would do. You stay in your room and don't make a peep peep Hee. Or don't touch that. Touch. Like I touched this. I touched this. Literally, what a child does. Right? And then she giggles and slides under. I god. Steele walks in and is surprised to see Tony in the bedroom. He says, Anthony, is it? And Tony tells him, still is. He snidely asks if he acquired a taste for fish eggs as he goes in into the closet to change. Tony says later, he comes out of the closet. Anyway, Tony says he thought he was in prison, and Steele says, yeah. I bet you did. We then see Laura come into the room starting to say she thought she heard, and then she stops herself when she sees Steele. And here, she says, mister Steele.
Eric:Mhmm. But, again, it's Yeah. It's inconsistent. You know? She's if she's gonna do it in public, she needs to do it in public all the time. And in the room working with Tony, that was a professional situation. Yeah. And so it should have been Mr. Steele. Not it it was not a casual situation.
Sara:Well, but in the bedroom, it would be casual in the sense that if you see your spouse inside your home, even if they're not supposed to be there, you'd probably say their name before you'd say
Eric:Right.
Sara:Mister so and so. Yeah. But, yeah. Steele says she always gets a little formal around guests, and Mildred asks what he's doing there. And Steele says, the jungle got a little crowded. Laura asked how he got out of jail, and he says, they made a backdoor. And as we see this, we see can Cheetah's hand under the bed start to emerge to play with Tony's foot. Like Really? Yeah. He kicks her foot back as Laura says she thought they agreed that she would do the investigating and still reminds her of the gallows that he mentioned. They're up. He asked Mildred if she found out who Key's beneficiary is. Now I did they actually hang people in Mexico in the eighties? Was that still a thing? Or
Eric:I don't know. At at the very least, it was metaphoric.
Sara:Okay. Because I
Eric:And that's that's how I I took it was that it was metaphoric, but I don't know. I'm googling. Question.
Sara:No. Actually, apparently, the official death penalty by hanging or any other legal method was not used in Mexico in the eighties. Mexico restricted the death penalty in military law in 1937 and effectively abolished it entirely for civil crimes in 1929 and 1931, formally prohibited prohibiting its return by ratifying international human rights treaties in 1981. So, yeah, it abolished the civil court, stopped handing down death sentences prior to the eighties, and then apparently, there was a constitutional band ban, sorry, against capital punishment in 2005. Yeah. So Although it does say, while legal judicial executions didn't happen, the government carried out covert extra judicial killings and disappearances during the dirty war era ending in the eighties and criminal cartels, etcetera. Yeah. So I mean
Eric:Yeah. They like that. They they they'll they like the Yeah.
Sara:But there
Eric:weren't there
Sara:weren't literal gallows or there's not I guess they officially don't have the death penalty, which I found interesting So I assumed they would.
Eric:So I I'd I'd taken it to be more metaphoric than literal, but, yeah, I hadn't thought about the possibility.
Sara:Now we know.
Eric:So yeah. You know what? We need a little stinger like the you remember the and now you know commercials on TV?
Sara:Yeah. Knowing is 0.5 the battle. Yeah. He asked Mildred if she found out who Key's beneficiary is. Mildred says it's his niece and begins to say her her name, but she's interrupted by Laura who supplies it, Danielle Scribner. Mildred wonders who she knew or sorry, how she knew. Sorry. My notes are terrible. How she knew the happy Tony says
Eric:Can use a computer instead of having having to try and read your own handwriting?
Sara:Read between the lines. Anyway What are you saying? I don't understand. Email coming in. No. Tony says that she's already there to claim the body. Steele comments that that's 1 expeditious niece.
Eric:Would that be email or f mail?
Sara:Laura cautions if she really is his niece. Just then there's a knock on the door and a man calling for Laura saying, it's captain Suarez. Steele panics, and Laura tells him, get under the bed. You see Tony start to protest, but they don't have time. They all sit on the bed to try to hide. This looks weird. Mhmm. 3 grown adults sitting on the bed.
Eric:Well, guess it depends. It it depends on your frame of reference.
Sara:And Okay. And I started with dildo Newfoundland, and this has just gone off the rails. We need to just stop. Right.
Eric:Hey. You started it.
Sara:I didn't the good people of dildo started it. Anywho, they all sit on the bed and try to hide any evidence, and then the lord calls out that it's open. Captain Suarez walks in with his officers, and we see Steele under the bed, notice Conchita for the 1st time. She gives him a little wave and says, hola. Captain Suarez comes into the bedroom, and Laura asks if she can help them find something. He says her husband. She feigns surprise. He's not buying it. He tells her not to tell him that she doesn't know the seal broke out of his out of jail today. Laura says, no. She knows he did. The captain asked if she knows where he is, and she says, yes, as as well. Under the bed, Conchita's getting overly she does not know this man. She does not know this man. She's under the
Eric:She doesn't hey. Any
Sara:yeah. Any port in a storm? Will do. It literally random dude under the bed with her, and she's like, hi. And she's starting to touch him. And I'm just like, what is wrong with this woman? What is wrong with her? It's just Laura says that the last she heard, he was heading for the Hotel Del Amore. She tells him that she thinks that there's he thinks there's something there that can prove his innocence. And the captain says, very well. I'll look into that, but warns them not to leave until he comes back. Oh, yeah. Sure. Don't run away. Yeah. Like, that'll work. Yeah. Under the bed, Steele is
Eric:Because that people always do what they're told.
Sara:Yeah. I gotta give credit to this bit, though. Steele is amused by her friendliness. He's just sort of looking at her like, what is this? What is going on with this woman? You know? Like a like being amused by a small child. Yeah. He leaves, and Mildred says that was close as they help Steele out. He says the maid service around here was deplorable. They wouldn't believe the lint under bed. He says this while looking straight at Tony, which I really appreciate. Laura says we don't have time and asks if they all agree that the niece killed Keyes for the insurance money. Mildred says yes, but how do they prove it? Tony adds that if she claims the body and heads home, it's done. It's over with. Steele asks Tony how he has a grave robbing. And he says, I'm an archaeologist. Remember? Steele says, how could I forget? He tells Laura that she has to detain the niece until the funeral home closes. She gives the reference for Beverly Hills cop, and Tony is confused. Steele says Eddie Murphy, judge Ryan Holt, Paramount 19 85, and says that's an excellent idea. A couple of well placed bananas ought to decommission his car or her car. Sorry. Laura completes the thought saying that Tracy
Eric:More than 1 use for a banana. Yeah.
Sara:A banana from the bathroom. Yeah. Laura completes the thought saying that Tracy Lord can come to the rescue and show for her wherever she wants to go and then Steele ads and get hopelessly lost. He's smiling at Laura and Mildred says, aren't they great together? Pointedly. Yeah. I would hate for someone to try and mess with this team. Laura clearly sees what she's doing. She says to go get bananas and Mildred says, ape food coming right up. Steele stands up and tells Tony to come along. It's rude to keep a corpse waiting and Laura follows, but not before she sees conchita climbing out from under the bed.
Eric:The the 8 food, 8 food coming up line. Yeah. I think it was it was a reference to what did he come in swinging on a vine?
Sara:Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Probably.
Eric:It just had to be something.
Sara:So she smiles and waves at Laura saying, Hola. And then Laura looks her up and down and says, you must be the lint, which I love. I love her delivery. I love the way she kinda gives her the once over. I love all of it. But wouldn't she be worried about Conchita giving Steele away at this point? She's been under the bed. She knows he's out of jail, and she's heard all of their plans. She doesn't know who this woman is. And she just walks out of the room. Yeah. And That's And they all just kind of some Like, they all just sort of ignore it. Like, forget about it in the next scene, and and everything is it's just weird. Anyway Yeah. Scene change. I love this scene. I have to say, this is 1 of my favorite scenes in terms of Steele and Tony as a comedic duo because I realize we don't love it when he's hitting on Laura. We don't love it when she's reciprocating or what have you. But Steele and Tony together are funny. They are actually really funny as as foils, as people who dislike each other. It's good stuff. And we get this funeral home. They sneak onto the premises. They don't have their crime clothes. Come on, guys. Like, that should be standard packing arrangements. I'm just saying. Yeah. And they get to the door, and he goes to this is my I love this. He's he gets down there. He takes out his little lock pit lock pit kit, and Tony sarcastically says, did you and the little women get those as wedding presents? He glares at Tony, and then he kneels down to pick the lock and says, and I like this for Steele. Right? He's finally kinda sticking up for Laura in that he says, she doesn't like to be called the little woman. She's a very independent sort, my bride. And he says that with pride. Mhmm. He's not whatever they were at each other's throats for it before, he sticks up for her here, and I like it.
Eric:And and part of it could just be that he's he's it's Tony making those comments. If somebody else had made that comment, he might not have been quite as strident in his response. But I I think it's reinforced by the fact that it's Tony making those comments, and and he he just doesn't wanna have anything to do with Tony. And so it's it's like True. I'm gonna put you down.
Sara:Well, I think in in an office situation, if it was a client, he probably wouldn't have responded that way. But yeah.
Eric:No. It's Tony. So I'm gonna put I'm gonna say something to to put you in your place because yeah.
Sara:Yeah. So he asked Tony to shine the torch on the lock, flashlight for those of us in North America. But then Tony kicks it down instead, saying no time to get fancy. And in 1 of my absolute favorite moments of the series, he's just sort of sits there frozen for a 2nd, turns to look at Tony, blinks his eyes a few times, and then says sarcastically, oh, good. Now no 1 will know we're here. Yeah. It's just it's perfect. Every single movement of that with the way he freezes, the way he sort of blinks his eyes a bunch of oh, good. Tony, it's open, isn't it? I just adore it. You know?
Eric:This that little bit alone Yeah. Proves that Brosnan really needs to do more comedy.
Sara:Physical comedy. He's so funny. He's
Eric:Yeah. I mean, go get some old Cary Grant scripts
Sara:or
Eric:something and redo them because he's so good at this stuff. And this isn't even really physical comedy. This is this is reaction comedy.
Sara:Yeah. Yeah. It the facial expressions. Like, everybody talks about how Jim Carrey or, you know, some of these other like, Robin Williams, they have that rubber face. They have that ability to kind of make all of these expressions that are hilarious, and and they are. But he actually does too. He has that rubber face. He has that ability to look exaggeratedly angry or exaggeratedly appalled or horrified or whatever. He's just really good at it. And and he got sort of
Eric:And delivery of the sarcasm line
Sara:is just so it's so
Eric:It it's it's the delivery is is yeah. It's great.
Sara:It's it's I don't think people realize because when it comes to awards like the Oscars or the Golden Globes, etcetera, people tend to downplay comedy. Very rarely do comedic performances get an Oscar. And and now they have a separate they have a separate category in the Golden Globes for comedymusical performance. But when it comes to sort of best actor, best actress, it always goes to the heavy, heavy drama. And to be fair, those performances can be very emotionally draining and they they are very difficult. But it's hard to be funny too. It is not easy to be funny to time a joke right to time a response right to give the right facial expressions or the right body movements, like, that is a skill, and not everybody has it. Because if you watch the I wanna say it's the 3rd X Men movie. I'm trying to remember which 1 it was. It was either the 1st or the 3rd. But there was 1 of the X Men movies that Joss Whedon wrote the script for. And most of it got tossed out. They rewrote it. A couple of his lines survived, but they're terrible because the delivery of the line is not what he intended for the delivery of the line to be. And if you've I mean, you've seen Firefly. You know that with Joss Whedon, anything that he did or directed or wrote was always a line perfect reading. Like, he did not allow his actors to ad lib. He didn't allow them to put their personality into a role. He wanted a delivery a certain way, and he would do the take as many times as necessary. Because for all of his other faults, he knows what's funny. And he knows how to get a good, like, comedic performance out of somebody. Halle Berry had this line that she had to say in the X Men movie where she says, Do you know what happens? She's threatening to kill 1 of the bad guys. And she says, do you know what happens to a toad that gets struck by lightning and then lightning hits it? And she says the same thing that happens to every everything else, I. E. It kills you. Right? But the way she delivers line, it's really over the top melodramatic. It's not funny. And Whedon has always said that he cries. He weeps whenever he sees that scene because he's like, that's not how it's supposed to be said. Mhmm. And you think about Steele's response here and how it could easily have been just an over the off the cuff. Oh, yeah. Great. Now no 1 will know you're here. That might have gotten a chuckle or a smirk. But the way he draws this out, it gets the laugh. It gets the laugh because it's funny.
Eric:Well, see, there's there's 2 extremes to comedy, I think. And True. Yeah. People that you mentioned earlier are on the 1 extreme. And I I gotta say most of them don't give credit to the fact that they're copying Jerry Lewis
Sara:Fair.
Eric:Because it's somehow not cool to to be associated with anything to do with Jerry Lewis. But they're they're doing that extreme, you know, absurd comedy. The other extreme is the what I call the Jack Benny style of comedy.
Sara:Yeah. Yeah.
Eric:And it is it is the slow delivery, the thoughtful delivery, the not over the top delivery. Johnny Carson, for example, huge Jack Benny fan. He has admitted that he basically just stole Jack Benny's Yeah. Persona. So, yeah, this the the the some of the best comedy, I think, is the the the more thoughtful, slow, reactive kind of the Jack Benny style response. Yeah. You know? And and if somebody once said that Jack Benny could be funny just reading a phone book.
Sara:Or you get the the British sort of dry British wordplay style of comedy, where it's not even about facial expressions. It's more about they're twisting the words and using wordplay as the comedy, and they're expecting the audience to be smart enough to catch the double entendres and catch the jokes because they're not waiting around for you to do it. They're not standing there waiting for the clapping or the the canned laughter. They're just gonna keep going. A really funny skit, if you've ever seen it, is Rowan Atkinson did a a skit called Welcome to Hell where he comes out dressed as the devil. And he's, like, basically welcoming all these different groups to hell, and he just delivers it all very deadpan. My name is the devil or Toby. He's like, you this is Bob. He'll show you the the ropes and the chains and the whips. And then he starts like, bankers, bankers, yes, where are the oh, yes, come on up. Christians, yes. I'm sorry the Jews were right. And he just keeps like, atheists, you must be feeling a right bunch of Charlies now, aren't you? He just keeps going. And it's funny. It's funny as heck because he just doesn't wait for people to laugh. He just keeps going with the bit. So, yeah, there's lots of different types of comedy. Rosman is great at this. Stephanie is too. We've we've commented a couple of times on how there are moments for her where she's just really, really funny. But this is 1 of in my opinion, this is 1 of Steele's best facial expression line delivery, like the whole oh, good. Now no 1 will know we're here. Yeah. And then Tony, it's open, isn't it? They step over the busted door. They go inside to start checking the coffins. As they do so, Tony asked if he has any idea what the penalty is for body stealing in Mexico, and Steele says, can't be any worse than the penalty for actually killing 1. Yeah. And now I'm curious, and I'm I'm definitely gonna end up on a list. But what is the penalty for body stealing in Mexico? Question mark. Legally categorized as the exhumation violation or desecration of a corpse or grave carries a baseline prison sentence of 1 to 5 years. Because Mexico utilizes a dual legal system, penalties can vary based on whether the crime is prosecuted at the federal level or blah blah blah blah blah. So 1 to 5 years in prison. Let's see if that was the case in the 19 eighties.
Eric:I I wouldn't imagine it changed much.
Sara:K. Let's see here. No. Apparently, it did change. The information blah blah blah. Oh, okay. So there was a historical case from the 19 eighties. This that was the current statutory baseline. The most infamous case involving body violation in human remains was from 1989. So this was obviously before that, but let's see. You're likely to think of 1 of 2 major historical events. Ah, the robbery of the century at the Anthropologie Museum of 1985. They stole human remains from a museum, a 124 priceless pre Hispanic artifacts that included the famous jade funerary mosaic mask of the Maya king I can't pronounce that, which had been excavated directly from his tomb. And the thieves were caught and sentenced to 27 years in prison. Yeah.
Eric:But that was probably also because it was historical art.
Sara:True. But there was also a case in 1989, a drug trafficking cult led by Adolfo Costanzo and Sara Sara Aldricht operated out of a ranch near Matamoros, and they have they stole some, oh, mutilating dead bodies, dug up graves, sacrificed their human victims, and used their brains, hearts, and bones, oh, okay. I don't wanna Yikes. Okay. Decades long prison terms. So yeah. Fun. Fun. Fun. Anyway.
Eric:And on that lighthearted note.
Sara:Yeah. Steele says, speaking of bodies, he asked Tony if he didn't happen to notice that young nubile went under his bed. Because, yeah, you think she you find them laying around all over the place. Sure. It's irritating. Tony plays dumb and says he can't say that he did. Still says he thought he might have misplaced her. Are you in the habit of misplacing women?
Eric:Me, personally?
Sara:No. Yeah. Anybody. I mean, it's it's Tony insists that old bones are his bag, and Steele says it's a pity. She was very friendly. Like, she's she's being talked about like
Eric:a dog. And if Tony cared, that might have might have offended him.
Sara:But that's might have he's just kind of ignores it. He's like, whatever. He can have her. They continue to look until Tony concludes that Key's body doesn't seem to be here. Steele notices an unmarked earn. Sorry, an marked senior Keyes and says not entirely anyway. Tony is surprised that he was cremated, and Steele says, unless those are old cigar ashes. Tony says he doesn't get it. How can his niece have him cremated if she hasn't even claimed the body yet? Steele sites, and then there were none. And Tony agrees that there isn't much. He says, Barry Fitzgerald. Tony is even more confused. This isn't Keys? Steele continues. Walter Houston, Lois Hayward, C. Aubrey Smith, confused. Tony says, Steele's you're losing it. 20th Century Fox, 1945. Steele asks another movie? Or sorry. Tony asks another movie and Steele says, no. The solution to this case, grab that urn. Keys is alive. And I again, that exchange, the back and forth there is also very funny. They are funny together when Laura's not around.
Eric:It's kinda reminiscent of 1st season Laura and Steve.
Sara:And Murphy. Yeah.
Eric:Or him and and Murphy. Yeah.
Sara:It it it has that same energy, and I like it. I just wish that they didn't have Laura's character written so poorly when it comes to Tony because otherwise, I kind of would have enjoyed him. You know? Inside the hotel room, Steele is pacing with the urn on the table. He says it was there all along, right under his nose. Mildred wonders what he's smelling, and Steele says, Keyes faked his own murder the same way Barry Fitzgerald did in in, and then there were none. Mildred protests that she saw he saw him dead, and Laura says the devil's playground referencing the season 1 case from Steele trapped. I think it was Steele trapped. Right? Steele says precisely. Tony says they have a hell of a code. Mildred, and I would pity the guy who tries to crack it. Laura ignores her and tells Tony that a few years ago, they had a similar case where the suspect faked her own death using digitalis leave. Steele says the proper dosage would have slowed Key's pulse and heart rate down to the point where only perceptive doctor could tell he wasn't actually dead. Mildred examines sorry. Mildred, slime ball. And Laura adds that he changed his travel plans to make it look as if they were following him around Mexico. And Steele adds that he staged enough public confrontations to give the police all the motive they needed to rest for him for his murder. Mildred, that lowlife slimeball. And Laura adds, enter his accomplice who made it look as if had been cremated and Steele says that with Keys cremated, there would be no way to prove he wasn't actually dead. Mildred, I love it when they're on a roll. Tony suspiciously says, all this because he thought your marriage wasn't legit? Laura says, among other things. And Steele had such as a $2,000,000 insurance payout. It's a good thing he did add that because Laura's given a little too much away with the with her like, among other other things. Like Mhmm. He's new of
Eric:she could've covered that by saying, well, you know, we've we've had cases where we've run into him and we just we just didn't hit it off and we we humiliated him a couple of times. And so, you know, he's got that burr under
Sara:his shoulders. So Yeah. She adds plus the twisted satisfaction of knowing that mister that Remington was rotting in a Mexican jail for a murder that never was. Mildred, that slimy lowlife slime ball. And then Steele, redundant but accurate. Laura laments that knowing he's is alive is 1 thing, but proving it is going to be another kettle of fish. Steele grins and says, piece of cake. Mildred hits Tony's leg in excitement. He's got a plan. She tells him to land on him. And Steele says, all I have to do is force the niece to make contact with Keyes. Then they have him. Laura wonders exactly how they're going to do that, and Steele chuckles and looks directly at the urn. So next, we see, Danielle Scribner walking into her room. Laura and Steele watch from what looks to be like a little bush slash balcony thing from further back. She unlocks the door and goes inside only to see keys earned on a side table. She looks furious and goes over to the door and slams it shut. Steele predicts that it will only be a few moments before she goes running to keys. It's not. Spoiler alert. No. We see night turn into day. Laura and Steele are still watching the room. They're exhausted, getting bitten by things. She says that she hasn't moved and Steele jokes that at least they can say they were up all night on their honeymoon. True. She just glares at him. Like, come on. That was that was a little funny. Little little funny. Tony approaches and bring them brings them both coffee. Laura throws the lid away because she is a litter bug. This bothers me. Those are those old school Styrofoam plastic like, Styrofoam containers to begin with that don't buy it engraved? She just takes the lid off and just tosses it into the bush. Like, no.
Eric:Yeah. I mean No. That's what you do with them.
Sara:You leave the lid on. You sip from it. You find a garbage. You don't just litter it all over. Canadians, we don't litter. We are not litterbugs.
Eric:Hey. People with cigarettes do do that sort of thing all the time. They throw their cigarette butts out their car window. They they throw them as they're walking down the sidewalk. You you take care of that 1st, and then we'll take care of the people who just died
Sara:from this. In the eighties, yes. That that was extremely common. I will say that that has lessened to an extreme amount here, at least in Canada. You don't really see that terribly often. But even if you did, cigarettes at least biodegrade. They're they're not gonna sit in a landfill for 300 years. So don't litter people. Just don't litter.
Eric:Well, now, you know, now that they've got plastic that's made out of
Sara:The biodegradable plastic. Yeah.
Eric:Corn oil. Yeah.
Sara:Which I still don't love people littering. Don't do it. Doesn't look nice. Steele asked or sorry. Tony asked if there's anything, and bitterly, Laura says she thinks she's sleeping in. Steele asked Tony if he can ask him a personal question. Tony says it depends, and Steele says that he knows he can speak for missus Steele that, well, they enjoy his company immensely. Don't you have any other friends?
Eric:No.
Sara:That's funny. Just just the way he says it. Tony says he's not due at the dig for a couple of days, but if he's in the way, he starts to back away. And Laura moves it over saying, not at all. She says her husband is trying to thank him for his generous help in his own unique way. Right. Sure. Tony says, oh, and the bushes rustle as Mildred appears. Wow. This is 1 crowded bush.
Eric:That's what she said. Oh.
Sara:Yeah. I'm sorry. Yeah. Maybe your sex tape. I know. Laura asked why she isn't at the switchboard, and Mildred says because Denise called for an airport taxi. She's heading back to LA. Laura angrily exclaims, piece of cake, She's going home. Admits every plan has a flaw, and they watch as the porter comes to the door and opens it. Danielle Scribner steps out dressed in black with her urn in hand as the porter grabs her bag. She looks around as if expecting something to happen and walks away. Still wonders why she's using a taxi when she could just use Kees' car. Laura says she hates to admit it, but that's a good question. Tony suggests she might just be a decoy. Mildred suggests that Keys could be waiting for her at the airport. Steele tells Mildred and Tony to follow the niece. He and Laura will keep an eye on the car. So we see Mildred running outside the hotel yelling loudly for the airport taxi. It stops, and she gets in saying in Spanish, airport airport pronto. The driver turns out to be Tony and says, And we see Daniel Scribner is in the back. So they stole a taxi?
Eric:Yeah. Apparently.
Sara:He has ethical issues with breaking into Keys' hotel, but has no problems with breaking into a a morgue and or stealing a car.
Eric:Yeah. I mean, it's it's it's all you know, certain things are acceptable and certain things are not.
Sara:It's fluid. Yeah. And then Danielle looks at Tony suspiciously and asks if he was the wine and cheese basket. I don't recall any wine, but okay. And does that go in the bathroom too? Does it have to be do you have to chill it in the toilet? In in Spanish, Tony says he doesn't understand English, and Mildred attempts to change the subject by commenting on the urn. She says it's a nice phase, and that's where she got it. Danielle says it's an and Mildred jokes, anybody I know? She has a really warped sense of speaking of warped sense of humor, Mildred, right there. Because, like, she's all for head conking. She's like, Good for the boss when she thinks that Steele killed keys and did it. Sure. Anyone I know who's the big guy. They begin to drive forward, and then they lurch to a stop as Tony merely, but sadly, doesn't hit Conchita. So close. Yeah. She gets in the car. Dude. Mhmm. And they get into an angry fight. She she she claims to want to go to The States, but she's hindering every attempt for him to get her there. Like, it's just he tries to get her to leave, but she refuses. Mildred leans forward and asks who she is, but all Tony can say is, no comprendo, senora. We see the taxi drive away, and as soon as it does, we see Keyes' car come up to the front being driven by a man with a Rent A Car uniform on. They open the trunk and start unloading the luggage to which Laura says she would recognize Key's ugly luggage anywhere. The man gets in and Steele suggests they see where he's going. The 2 of them get into a hotel cart with Steele apparently comfortable out in broad daylight.
Eric:The Steele a car because that thing, I don't care what they show you here. It's not gonna keep up.
Sara:Well, okay. Yes. I I fully agree with that, but, also, he's in broad daylight. This is a murder suspect. He's he's sitting in this little Mhmm. Golf cart thingy where anybody can see him. What? Right. Yeah.
Eric:But sees that if they had stolen the car, he would be inside, and it would be less visible.
Sara:And he could yeah. She could drive, and he could, like, hunch down and hide.
Eric:And then he could keep up, but Yeah. There's no way that he could keep up in this.
Sara:No. I agree. I agree. There's no no possible way. We see the red car leave the compound and the little cart follow after it, and then the camera pans to the side where we see the police car hiding in the bushes because, of course, they would be. Yeah. The cop radio someone in Spanish. Then we cut to the taxi pulling up to the airport. A man opens the door and begins to get her luggage out while she just walks away. How does she how does how does the man know where to take her luggage? She just gets out and goes.
Eric:Maybe maybe it's tagged.
Sara:Yeah. I guess.
Eric:Destination already. Yeah. So they just, you know, it's like concierge. They just take your luggage. They get a check on the airplane for you and bill you for your overage charges later.
Sara:Yeah. Mildred gets out and asks Tony what he's waiting for as Conchita hangs off of him. He tells her to never mind and stop that urn. Why does he what? Just toss her in front of traffic and go. Like, why are we dealing with this? Tony gets out of the car with her still hanging off of him and begs her to get off. She tells him no and accuses him of wanting to leave her. Yes. Yeah. We all would. She said, yeah.
Eric:And did you you didn't quite you weren't quite clear. He gets out, and she is she is hanging on him as he gets out. Yeah. Like, she's literally drag she's being dragged out of the van by Tony because she's got her arms around his neck, and it's just like
Sara:She's like this barnacle that you can't get off. She just And then she suggests they go to his room and says the urge is is 1st of all, when is the urge not with her? Because apparently, that's all she is. And also, he's working. He's
Eric:This this is this is why he's trying to get rid of her.
Sara:Yeah. He says, are you crazy? I've almost got this thing wrapped up. And she says, there will be another way to get to America. I'm the sex cannot be that good. It can't. It's not.
Eric:Well, either it is or she's really, really desperate. She's yeah.
Sara:He says, not for him. She stomps her foot saying, it's her, isn't it? Tony asks who? And Conchita says, that gringa brunette. Tony says, she's a case. And Conchita asks, you're telling me. She follows him pushing him. Okay. Like, she's now physically assaulting him, and apparently that's fine. And saying that he pushed her aside, ignored her. She had to hide under the bed. She got sunburned. And why? So he could be with her. She goes to hit him, and he ducks. He picks her up and tells her to stop. She grabs his arm and says, if he if he leaves now, she will have to take that dinner invitation from his boss. Tony does and, again, I hate to give him the props for it, but Tony does the right thing here and says, make sure he takes you to a nice place. You'll have earned it. Angrily, she screams, the joke is on him. She already had dinner with his boss and breakfast too. And Tony, he just stops briefly at the door to the airport, and it he kinda, like, gives it 0.5 a seconds consideration. And then he's like, meh. He just goes in.
Eric:I'm I'm I'm I'm almost thinking he's he's not even giving it consideration in the sense that I think you're you're mean.
Sara:No. No. No. No.
Eric:I I I think he's just he's there, and and he's saying, well, of course of course, you did. Of course, you already have.
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:And, man, am I lucky I dodged that bullet? That's his problem now.
Sara:Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Have fun with that. Goodbye. She screeches in frustration, storms away, gets into a taxi. Inside the airport, we see Tony walking around and looking for Mildred and Danielle. Behind him, we hear Danielle insisting that she stole it from me. It's mine, I tell you. We see 2 airport security officers escorting Mildred and Danielle, and Mildred is clutching keys or impossibly. I love that this was Mildred's backup plan. Just grab the thing and then claim it's hers. That's right. She knows that that is not really keys. She knows that Danielle is a is a phony, and so she has no like, no. This is my It's my dead person. You can't prove it isn't. And she says to Mildred,
Eric:she wants she lie?
Sara:Right? And she says to Mildred, she wants that urn back. It's her urn. She lunges for Mildred, but she's held back. And Mildred tells her, back off. It's my She sees Tony and tells the guard, ask him. He'll tell you who the urn belongs to. In Spanish, the officer asks Tony. He thinks a minute, and he points to Mildred and says it's hers. She loses her temper and asks if he's loco. The guard tells him to come along as they have to explore this further. And as they walk past Tony, Meldrin says with some admiration, who are you? Tony just smiles. Which, to be fair, if he were an archaeologist, an actual archaeologist working on a dig in Mexico, it would not be unheard of for him to speak the language. In fact, like, archaeologists typically speak a number of languages, especially if they're they're looking at Do they really artifacts?
Eric:Is it just a movie thing? I I I'm gonna say it's mostly a movie thing, and they've got translators.
Sara:No. I mean, it wouldn't in the eighties. You'd you'd have a lot of difficult especially with dead languages or languages, like ancient If
Eric:they're dead languages, you don't need to speak them.
Sara:You you need to read like, if you find transcripts or, like not transcripts, but, like, hieroglyphics or things, like, written in in ancient languages, you need someone who can read them.
Eric:Well, yeah. But reading is not the same thing as speaking.
Sara:Yeah. I I I have a history to read.
Eric:Your train jump tracks there.
Sara:No. But I okay. So I have
Eric:a history speaking the language. Now you're about about reading the language.
Sara:Well, they go hand in hand. I mean, understanding the language means that you can at least to some degree speak it and or read it. I mean, I'm better at reading French than I am at speaking it, but I can still speak some of it. Bad accent mind you, but still, I looked into what it would take to become an archaeologist because I was curious about it. And you would have to learn at least some other languages, things like Latin because frequently that's part of the gig. I'm saying it makes sense that he knows Spanish, especially if he's been working in South America.
Eric:So you have to learn Latin to be an archaeologist. Don't have to to South America.
Sara:Okay.
Eric:What's the connection there? I I'm losing that train of thought there. I I think the train skip the track.
Sara:You don't have to. I'm saying that most people do because if they are going to be unearthing things that are written or that are reading documents that are from other time periods other other places. You typically do learn some of those languages. It's it's kind of part and parcel of the job. And if you're working in South America, it makes sense that you'd probably wanna know Spanish.
Eric:Just because it makes sense doesn't mean that's that's how it works. I
Sara:am saying most people that are in that line of work probably speak more than 1 language. And it makes sense if he's if he's been if he's been in South America for 3 years, he probably
Eric:Now that I can buy. He's been in South America for 3 years, so he can speak the language. Just because he's an archaeologist doesn't necessarily archaeologist, but he's not an archaeologist. To speak the language.
Sara:But I'm saying it's not unheard of for people who are in archaeology to speak other languages. It's it's fairly common. And he is I mean, I I would assume the same is true for people who work in intelligence, but I don't know any spies. So if anyone knows a spy, let me know.
Eric:Well, we could
Sara:tell you, but we we Then I'd have to kill you. But, yeah, like, I Mildred's looked towards, who are you? It's like, well, maybe he's he's Tony.
Eric:Yeah. He's just
Sara:Tony. And I just okay. I googled it. I googled it. Here, it says many archaeologists must must learn other languages, whether they need modern or ancient languages depends entirely on their specific region time period and research focus. So field work and local
Eric:Is this the Google AI summary that we know is about reliable?
Sara:I'm looking at the archaeologist epic epigraphy. It's a website. And this is the arch the archaeologist and the languages. Just making guess, how many languages have I learned in the name of research and archaeology? I'm not talking about Latin and ancient Greek or any other dead language or script like Linear B. Okay. Yes. Actually, but that's just a funny syllabary of some of a somehow early Greek dialect or cuneiform scripts. Next English, it is Italian, a very poor amount of French, and not that poor, but still minimal form of Spanish, slowly increasing amounts of Dutch and very few but nearly forgotten phrases of Turkish. So it does say here that languages are a must for the humanities and that archaeology is a form of, like, fieldwork. Archaeologists working internationally must often speak the modern language of the country where they dig to talk with local crews, government officials, and communities. And graduate programs often require a reading knowledge of modern scholarly languages, frequently German and French, because many foundational and current research texts are published in those languages. Spanish is similarly essential for The Americas and Arabic for The Middle East. Ancient and dead languages, historical specialists, archaeologists focusing on literate civilizations do not just dig, they read. Classical archaeologists often learn Latin or ancient Greek. Egyptologists often learn hieroglyphic Egyptian or Coptic, and Near Eastern specialists learn Akkadian or biblical Hebrew. Reading versus speaking. So it does address that. Archaeologists do not speak these ancient languages out loud in the field. They build a specialized reading and translation vocabulary to decode inscriptions, tablets, and manuscripts. So they do typically speak it, especially if they're working in other countries. But French and apparently, French and German are the more common ones, which kind of
Eric:sounds be real helpful in South America.
Sara:Okay. Shush. Anyway, we see Laura and Steele have followed the car to a house where this is a nice house too. Yeah. Where did this come from? He didn't he doesn't make this much money. I've seen his suits. So Well Did he rent it? Like, is this a
Eric:Probably a rental. But also keep in mind that the standard of living in in many parts of Mexico is far below that of The US. So if you come in with a US level amount of money
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:True. You can live like a king in certain parts of of Mexico or South American countries because Yeah. The the difference in the the standard of living and and, you know, what that American dollar will buy you there versus what it will buy you in The US, which is about, what, 35¢ now.
Sara:Yeah. Well, it's funny. There was an episode of The Simpsons where they go to Canada, and there's all kinds of jokes made at, you know, the expense of Canadians.
Eric:Sure.
Sara:But if if I remember
Eric:correctly That's who that's that's why they exist.
Sara:If I remember correctly, Homer gives 1 of the hotel workers, like, 25¢, and he's like, woo hoo. I quit my job, and he leaves or whatever because it's 25¢American. You know what really
Eric:irritates me is you go to a, like, a store or a restaurant down here here in Anchorage Yeah. And you pay for something, and they give you change, and there's a Canadian 0.25 in there. And you just you just take it. Right?
Sara:Yeah. Yeah.
Eric:Don't try to to take that 0.25 and spend it back at the same place you got it from because they'll tell you, we don't accept Canadian coins. You gave it to me.
Sara:What's funny is that we will take it if it's an American 0.25 because I worked as a cashier for 8 years, and we're nowhere near the border. So it wasn't even like a well, we're 2 hours away, but it wasn't even like a border thing. You don't care. We'll take American 0.25, American dimes, American nickels. Like, if if someone comes up and hands American change, as long as it's not anything beyond change Mhmm. They'll take it.
Eric:Yeah. It just irritates me that business our
Sara:money, apparently.
Eric:Give it give
Sara:it to you,
Eric:but then and that's fine. But when you ask them to take back the very same 0.25 they just gave you, oh, no. We can't take that.
Sara:That's funny. Because we'll
Eric:took it in the 1st place. That's why you had it to give it to me.
Sara:We'll take your money. You just won't take ours. Anyway, we see that, they approach, and they see it's more of a mansion. Steele says it's his kinda hideout. Laura says she didn't realize Keyes has such exquisite taste. They go inside and Steele appreciatively says, it's amazing how a couple million in swindled dollars could change a man. Inside, he asked Laura to take a whiff, and she does saying she smells cheap cigars. He nods and says that he can almost hear him cackling. They walk through the house and out back to the gorgeous
Eric:You know, if he can afford to rent a place like this, he could Right. Why does afford he to just buy some decent cigars.
Sara:Or he could just, like, give it up. Give up this whole thing against Steele and live in this beautiful home and just chill out. Instead, you need to do all this nonsense. Come on.
Eric:Well, I'm I'm more concerned about the fact that he's still buying these cheap cigars.
Sara:True. Yeah. They yeah. Out out onto this gorgeous pool, it seems to be on some kind of balcony or rooftop, and we see 2 police cars approaching the house. Inside the massive bedroom, Laura asks Steele if he can believe this place. She comments that it has everything, including a see through floor. Frustrated, Steele says everything but keys. He says he knows he's here. He can feel it. Damn it. And Laura bends down and points through the floor, telling Steele to chalk 1 up for instinct because below, we see keys running along a pathway, and Steele goes out running after him saying, I knew he was alive. And Laura says, who doubted you? Steele says, I did, which I really like. I love the fact that he he you know, he had this hunch, but even that there was that tiny little bit of doubt in the back of his head.
Eric:Sure.
Sara:They don't even get down the stairs when the 3 police officers yell at them to stop. They open fire, and Steele and Laura have to run back inside the room. They exit the house a different way, we see them running along the path on the seawall. Cop shoots and nearly hits them, and they flatten themselves against the wall. Laura exclaims he's getting away, and we see keys in a small boat on the water. Steele says the hell he is, and they make a run for the beach with the cops still shooting. There's a small motorboat motorboat conveniently left on the shore
Eric:Oh, sure. They're they're keys inside and,
Sara:you know, keys inside. Hey. Get it? They get Anyway And they grab it, and they go after him. We see Keyes go around a cliff. Steele and Laura follow in the motorboat. On the other side, we see a dock, and Keyes' boat is tied up. Laura and Steele pull the motorboat up and get out. She asks if, he sees him, Steele looks around commenting that the bus that took them to the Hotel Della Moore is over there, and it looks familiar. Laura wonders if Keyes is going to that airstrip that they came in on. Steele says it's a good way to get out of the country undetected. They walk onto the bus, but it's empty. Suddenly, Laura spots Keyes in a taxi that drives just right by them. He gets behind the wheel on the bus, and they Steele it to follow him. So now they're in this We see them racing through the jungle with the bus falling further and further behind. They can follow in a golf cart, and that apparently is fine, but the bus can't keep up. Steele complains the bus is even slower than the limo, and Laura unnecessarily tells him they're losing him. Yeah.
Eric:Thanks for that update. I I wouldn't have known.
Sara:Yeah. Steele says at least they know where he's going. He hopes. A gunshot is heard, and they both duck. Laura wonders if if it's the Melvatos, and Steele says, no. It's worse. Laura looks back to see the police are chasing them. She warns Steele if they don't catch keys before they catch the bus, Steele cuts her off saying, that kind of talk is not going to make the bus go any faster. I like that. They enter an airstrip with the police right on their tail. At the end of it, Steele can see a small plane getting ready to taxi. Keys is piloting the plane. When did he learn how to fly a freaking plane? Who is this man?
Eric:Well, we don't know that he never did know how to fly
Sara:a plane. True. But, like, dun dun dun dun dun dun dun. Like, this
Eric:is You know? I was I was I had that at the end of my notes, but since you brought it up, this whole thing, especially the 2nd 2nd part of this episode, but even the the whole 1st part, it's like a plot to a James Bond movie. It's complicated, convoluted, makes no sense, and it's all about creating these scenarios just so that we have these actions.
Sara:And it's unfortunate because it would have been kind of a slap in the face to Brosnan who had just lost the role of a lifetime or so he thought at that point. Right? That would really suck.
Eric:Yeah. But it's very it's very bodgesque. You know, the boat chase, the the the the challenging the airplane on the runway. Yeah.
Sara:Exotic locales. The yeah. And Keyes piloting the plane, Steele decides to play chicken. As they race towards each other, Keyes eventually swerves, and the plane goes into a ditch. Good thing that he read the room, I guess, because Yeah. Keyes gets out and makes a run for it. Steele manages to overpower him in the tall grass as the police cars surround him. Steele yanks Keyes to his feet, telling him he can run, but he can't hide before punching him in the face, and we all cheered. Keyes falls
Eric:behind. That line is is a Yes. Playback of what Keys told Steele earlier. Yeah.
Sara:Keys falls, and behind Steele, the police pulled their guns. Captain Suarez warns Steele not to move, and Steele says, alright. Just don't shoot. Meanwhile, Keys has gotten up, he's running again. Laura asked him if they recognize that man saying they just can't let him get away. A gunshot is heard, and the cops pursue Keys. Laura and Steele do so as well, and we see Keys actually dead on the ground with 2 men, presumably Melvado, standing over them. 1 has a gun. Why would they stay? Why wouldn't they run? But okay. The police identify themselves and shoot, but 1 man starts to run at that point. The police shoot him and arrest the other man. Laura and Steele approach as they roll over Key's body and find that this time, he actually is dead. Steele tells Suarez that's the man he supposedly murdered 2 nights ago. So that obviously clears it up.
Eric:Well, no, not necessarily.
Sara:Okay.
Eric:We have the we have the charge of breaking out of custody, you know, evasion, evading arrest.
Sara:Yeah. It's funny how in the movie or movies and TV, they always, like, ignore all those other things just because they were wrong about 1 thing.
Eric:Mhmm. Yeah. But, you know, the thing is that I've always found interesting about that. And and in in real life as well is you have this thing that happens. You arrest somebody for something, and then all these other things happen as a result of that 1st thing. Well and then you find out that the 1st thing was invalid or fraudulent or just a wrong action because they weren't the the person. But anything that happened afterward as a result, like breaking out of prison, like evading arrest, resisting arrest, all that stuff, oh, that's that's still all stays. Yeah. It's like, no. No. No. No. You pulled the the rug out from under those things when you admitted that your 1st action of arresting this person or writing them a ticket or whatever was was wrong and fraudulent. Yeah. How does this work? I don't get it.
Sara:It's TV. We just hand wave and
Eric:go off in real life, though.
Sara:Yeah. No. That's true. That's true.
Eric:Anyway
Sara:We switch over to the airport, and Mildred comes up to Steele Laura and tells him it took a few pesos, but she managed to get them bumped up to 1st class. Laura asks Mildred how she will be traveling, and Mildred says, coach, figuring 3 is a crowd on a honeymoon. I mean, it wasn't much of a honeymoon, but okay.
Eric:And and it's just the flight back. So what what what is Mildred expecting him to do? Do it right there in the Fucking Saturday. 1st class?
Sara:If they were gonna
Eric:join the the show.
Sara:If they were gonna join the mile high club, they'd sneak into the teeny tiny bathroom, which I still have questions about logistics, but okay. Yeah. Yeah. Steele sarcastically says 3 seems to be par for the course in the in this honeymoon. He's referencing Tony. Mhmm. Laura realizes that they never took any honeymoon pictures, and Steele says so. And Laura reminds him of the lady from you know where who wanted proof of you know what. Steele remembers and says, oh, how could he forget? He grabs his camera and asks if Tony will take a picture of them. Why didn't they, like, walk around and get some other photos of, like, green space
Eric:for them to rush back to LA. I mean, now that all this is cleared up, they could Right.
Sara:They could have spent
Eric:a little extra time, take
Sara:a couple of more photos, and make it look as if they had a vacation because they just take 1 picture and then think it's gonna work. That's not gonna
Eric:Well, you make 50 copies of it.
Sara:Yeah. Right. So they go and pose and kiss for the photo. When they return to Mildred, she says they have to get going. Steele tells Tony it's been an experience. He can't look back on his honeymoon without thinking of them of him. Sorry. Laura says she can't thank him enough for all his help, and he says it's been his pleasure. He says they never would have met if the original plans hadn't been canceled, and Mildred gasps and tells him not to say that word again. This joke does not land.
Eric:Mhmm. Yep.
Sara:Anyway, Laura asks if he's heading back to the monuments, and he says as soon as their plane takes off. They smile, say goodbye, get the camera back as they walk away. Tony walks right over to the counter. When's your next flight to Los Angeles? Mhmm. If only it were that easy
Eric:Oh, yeah.
Sara:To get rid of Tony. But alas, on the on the plane, Steele and Laura are having champagne in 1st class. Laura
Eric:said it's a smooth. Slit skirt that is just conveniently placed to show off a lot of leg.
Sara:Figured you would notice that.
Eric:Notice what?
Sara:Yeah. Okay. And Laura stupidly jinxes everything by saying it's smooth sailing from here on in. Really, Laura? Really? Come on.
Eric:You haven't learned by now.
Sara:Yeah. Exactly. And then he says, here's to finishing in Los Angeles, what they started in Mexico. Again, why didn't they take a couple extra days? They had that beautiful hotel.
Eric:Mhmm. And even if they couldn't stay in the same room Right. The Presidential Suite or or whatever Anything's better than
Sara:the room with the mosquito netting.
Eric:Yeah. I mean and you you you have to think that they had at least 1 room available for someone. Somebody probably canceled. And even if it was a small room, I mean, the smaller, the better maybe. Yeah. More, you know
Sara:Cozy. No. Time to be cozy. Yeah. They could've More intimate. Really they really should've stayed and not Yes. Gone back to LA right away. But, unfortunately, that's
Eric:Here. Try the bananas.
Sara:We'll The writers don't like them. So No. Yeah. They attempt to wrap. They do the thing where they're wrapping their arms around each other. Why not just drink the champ? This doesn't make any sense to me.
Eric:That's never made any even even I don't I don't I'm gonna say I've never understood that even at weddings.
Sara:Yeah. But to
Eric:be honest with you, I don't remember if my wife and I did that at our wedding or
Sara:not. Don't think I've ever done it. I don't think I have ever even attend. I'm clumsy enough as it is just drinking from a cup. You add anything more to that equation and I'm gonna wear it. I'm not gonna drink it. I'm gonna wear it. So I don't wanna wear it. And, of course, they get tangled, eventually, they kiss on the cheek, or he kisses her on the cheek, and the scene freezes. That is the end of our 2 parter. Yes. Whoo. Any thoughts other than that, other than what we've already kinda talked about?
Eric:No. No. Just just like I said, I mean, it's it's like a James Bond movie plot, but and that's that's a pretty low bar to shoot for, quite frankly.
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:As I've said before, you know, you don't watch James Bond movies for the for the plot. It's just No. A a action packed diversion for 2 and 2.5, 2.75 hours. Yeah.
Sara:You watch them for the cars, the gadgets, and the women with the sexually suggestive names. Yeah. That's literally the 3 things you watch them for.
Eric:Yeah. Yeah. But it it wasn't even a a good James Bond plot, quite frankly. Which is a shame.
Sara:I will say I like the 2nd 0.5 more. Even though they're not together very much, I like the 2nd 0.5 more because it's not as focused on aside from the why don't you have a name conversation in the jail, which I don't love Mhmm. It's not as focused on sort of character assassination the same way the 1st 0.5 seems to be. And And it's not as
Eric:focused on trying to force force low Laura
Sara:and Tony together. Like, they do work together, but they're literally just working together.
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:There's no faux romantic tension, whatever it is. I mean, whether he has an interest in Laura is 1 thing, but she doesn't appear to even be paying him much attention aside from the help that he's being on the case. Mhmm. And the conchita thing drives me up the wall, but she's meh. There's some genuinely funny moments in this. The Tony and Steele stuff works for me. Mhmm. The the picking the lock bit, the lint under the bed, I did find that funny. That stuff is all good.
Eric:There's a lot of good lines in there, but unfortunately, you know, because Conchita was kind of the impetus for some of them, it's a shame that they were waiting on on those.
Sara:Yeah. Yeah. But, I mean, there's there there is a lot of comedy in the 2nd 0.5, and I think it does work well for them. So I I don't again, I I like the kind of romancing the stone sort of feel to it. I don't hate it as much as other people do. I don't love some of the character choices that the writers made, but
Eric:Mhmm. Yeah.
Sara:Anyway. Yeah. Okay. So on the website, www.steelwatching.com, we've got show notes, links to Amazon US, Amazon Canada. We also have social media resources and links such as?
Eric:The official Steele watching Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram, links that your friends can use to follow the podcast and go back to square 1, episode 1, and start from the beginning, or they can start from the end and work backwards. Doesn't matter. It all works. And then, of course, a link to the ever popular famous, but not our official group, the Steele Watchers fan group on Facebook,
Sara:which Join us.
Eric:Join us. We've actually had a few people say that they only do Facebook for that group, so that's interesting.
Sara:Is really awesome. Yeah.
Eric:Well, it's not awesome that they have to be on Facebook to get to
Sara:the group, but it's awesome
Eric:awesome that they they go that far.
Sara:That we're enough of a draw Yes. To to brave the Zuckerberg of it all. So Yes. And the next episode will be still hanging in there part 1. Will all be hanging in there.
Eric:It's all hanging in there, it's all hanging out? I'm not sure
Sara:which. So Alright.
Eric:Alrighty.
Sara:Bye bye.
Eric:Bye bye, everybody.
