Hello, and welcome to Steele watching, a podcast for Remington Steele fans. I'm Sara, and I swear I'm innocent.
Eric:And, I'm Eric. And, how do you spell rat?
Sara:4 letter word. T o n. Good times.
Eric:Yes. Good times.
Sara:And on that yeah. And on and on that note, wait. Before we get into it, do we have any emails, messages, stuff we need to
Eric:have a few things.
Sara:Okay. Cool.
Eric:1st of all, we've had a couple of comments from some of our listeners who are I'll say English as a 2nd language listeners.
Sara:Fair enough.
Eric:And they've commented about how it would be helpful if we had transcripts across all of the episodes. And while I agree that's true, it was only within the 4th season that we were able to start doing that. So I mean, I write my notes out as
Sara:a base as basically a transcript. So I've got, like, literally the entire series now written down in transcript format.
Eric:Well, I I think they're talking about what we say. Oh, god. I
Sara:don't do that.
Eric:Yeah. So although I have not had Sara's permission to do this, I am starting to go back and add transcripts to prior episodes. So what's gonna happen is if you have a podcast player that supports transcripts, you may see them in the podcast player or them be available as you're listening to the the podcast. And if they're not, if your podcast player doesn't support that, we're gonna have a link in the show notes that you can go to which will take you to the text version of the transcripts. Now it is a slow process. You know, they're they're 1 of these things that they charge you by the minute. And for some reason, 3 hour podcasts are are more expensive than 30 minute podcasts. I don't know why.
Sara:Can't imagine why that
Eric:would
Sara:be.
Eric:No. Not at all. And so, you know what? I've we've I've only got so much money to play with each month to do those with, so it's gonna be a slow process. It's gonna be an ongoing process for quite some time before we get those done. But we we are working on it, and we will get those done eventually, which actually I'll take this opportunity to say we are coming up to the end of the regular series. We don't know yet exactly what or when we might have any additional content, But if you are somebody who has been supporting us financially or you have thought about it because of things like trying to do the transcripts and also just keeping the episodes online for people to listen, there's still some ongoing costs. So, you know, if if you feel like you can continue to support us in in those efforts, that would be great. If you don't, we understand. But, you know, if you do, we we will thank you in advance for that. The other thing that I had here well, the 2nd thing I had here, 2nd feedback thing, is that somebody wrote that and this was in the Facebook group. The guy who started FedEx didn't fail. He got a c, which I contend I contend still proves my point. He came up with a truly new idea, and the best he could get out of it was a c because it wasn't anything his instructor recognized because it was a new idea and not a rehash of an old idea. So there, I win.
Sara:Did you see did you see the post? Somebody posted I think it was, a reply to 1 of our, like, 1 of our episode video bites, a list of photographs of or, like, a series of photographs of women in wedding dresses that have sweaters as well.
Eric:Yes. I
Sara:saw that. Just thought I would bring your attention to that.
Eric:Oh, no. I I saw that.
Sara:Kind of that individual.
Eric:I saw that. Yes. Yes.
Sara:Hear expecting that was staring at it for now
Eric:I did have 1 other thing I want to to bring up, and I I think it opens a can of worms. Uh-oh. And I think it answers maybe a couple of questions, but then creates a whole bunch of more new questions. And I wanna go back to the the Steele that would not die part 1. K. Laura and Steele arrive at the Hotel Delamore. They find out it's a kind of a
Sara:A dump? A dump.
Eric:A dump. Yes.
Sara:Let's just say it. A dump.
Eric:And within 20 minutes, they're trying to check out. Shortly after that, Steele leaves to go to Las Jatas to to find another more suitable location for their nuptial follow ons.
Sara:Consummation of the marriage.
Eric:Yes. And shortly after that time, so we're talking maybe an hour, 2 hours after they arrive, Tony Rizzelli has staged an attack. Yeah. Staged an attack. How did he know that Laura and Steele were gonna be there? He had to have planned it, which means that he is responsible he is responsible for their honeymoon getting rerouted to the Hotel Del Amore. Now he may have used Keyes to do it, and Keyes may have seen an opportunity to enrich himself by hijacking Tony's plan. But
Sara:This is what you were gonna like, this is the thing you were telling me about. Okay. Okay.
Eric:Because if Tony had really been working, let's say, undercover as an archaeologist where the nearest civilization was a hotel that didn't even have a phone Or any sort
Sara:of payment method beyond cash.
Eric:That's right. He could not have possibly known that Steele and Laura had arrived there when they did if he didn't know it in advance. So then we also have the fact that Mildred says he's not an archaeologist, which means and and and we have Conchita's comments about following him all over South America. So that combined with some other things that we we learn about as we go through this means that he was banished by his bosses to South America. He's been given all these dirty little assignments in these little know nothing places in South America. Somehow he found out about Steele and Keys' issues. He's got connections with people still back in The States in in his agency, and somehow he's got connections with immigration, which means he started the immigration investigation in order to set up Steele to be deported. That was his goal. That's always been his goal, to get Steele to England. When Steele came up with the fake wedding and he found out about it, he he set up the staged attack assuming that Steele was going to be there as well, and that would be his way to get in with Steele.
Sara:But that
Eric:didn't work because Steele took off. So the staged attack still went forward because it was already planned, but then now he used that to get in with Florida,
Sara:which he
Eric:used to get in with Steele, except that Keys double crossed Tony because Keys had to be involved in this at some level. He he Tony took advantage of his his animosity towards Steele. Maybe this was he he told Keyes, look. This is gonna get Steele out of the country and out of your hair. You won't have to deal with him anymore. But but Key saw an opportunity to go even further. He hijacked the plan, and then that's when Key Raselli had to improvise and then go back and pretend to be an immigration agent in the Los Angeles office to deal with the the situation to set Steele up with this fake case, yada yada yada. Okay. So so you have to look at season 5 and Bonds of Steele as 1 big, long episode and 1 big, long plot, and Tony was behind the whole thing.
Sara:So I am not gonna argue with that. The only thing that I would say could also be a possibility is that there's also a possibility that Keyes might not have known he was being used as a pawn and that Tony had somebody in his agency or something like that feed him the information about Steele knowing that toe that Keyes would go after him.
Eric:That could
Sara:be as well. Yeah. Yeah. Like, it might not been
Eric:Ultimately, Tony set off the whole thing. He kicked it all off. He's behind it. He's the puppet master pulling the strings, and Keys just happened to come along with a pair of scissors.
Sara:Conspiracy theory I can get behind. 100%. Cheers. Cheers. I don't have any
Eric:alcohol, but
Sara:I'll I'll okay. I'll pretend I ugh. Anyway, that's what I Yeah. 4 letter word name 4 letter word for rat. Got it. Yes. And on that note, we're gonna be talking about season 5 episode 4, still hanging in there part 2. Yeah. This 1st aired on 02/10/1987 and was written by Robin Bernheim and directed by Christopher Hibbler. And I it's the same well, continuation to the 1st side. So this 1 has a bit of a different TV guide synopsis, but so it says, in London, Steele is blackmailed by Tony into making a dangerous delivery. Meanwhile, Laura finds out why the woman from Steele's past has reappeared claiming to be his wife. And this was, again, filmed on location in England. So we have, like, the sort of 2nd 0.5, and I think the 2nd 0.5 is a lot stronger than the 1st 0.5. So Mhmm. There's that. I'll agree. Yeah. So we open on a shot of the plane in the air, and then we see Laura and Steele sitting together. And Laura has, like, a blouse and skirt combo that make it look like she's auditioning to be on Little House on the Prairie.
Eric:And notice her hairy. You commented on
Sara:her banging dress. Yeah.
Eric:They've it it's different again, but it's they but it's like, the front of that thing looks like a looks like a wild furry rodent that kinda got loose
Sara:and They they her bangs are her bangs are feathered, and they're they're not I don't know. They just keep trying different things. It's it's
Eric:And and it's not working.
Sara:No. She looks just so up like, the whole outfit, it looks like it is is designed to make her look sort of uptight. And that kinda bugs me because that's not who she is. I mean yeah. And the headphones that look like a stethoscope. Well I remember getting headphones on planes in the eighties, but they were just the standard. They go over your head and you stick them on your ears. I've never seen headphones that look like that.
Eric:Well, I've seen stuff like that, and I I presume it's based on reality. Now the ones I've seen in other places, and it's probably been on TV shows and movies, they're not that heavy duty. So maybe these are the 1st class version. You know? It
Sara:could be. Yeah.
Eric:They're a little sturdier, but the other ones I've seen are are the same design, same style, but they're just really, really lightweight junk.
Sara:Yeah. We flew to Florida when I was 9, so that would have been late eighties, and I ate, like, 89. And they just gave you the just the ones that went over your head. They were just your typical, like, cheap well, kinda like the ones I'm wearing only, like, cheaper and much, much cheaper. Yeah. But yeah. So these
Eric:Well, but these these the ones that they've got here, these are really cheap, like, pennies a piece. So
Sara:he's trying to get her attention, but either she can't hear him or she's choosing not to, and I I think it's the 2nd personally. It is. And eventually, he just sort of takes the headphones out and tells her that she hasn't said 2 words since they left Los Angeles. He suggests it might be time to break the sound barrier. And here's the thing. Like okay. Actually, you know what? I'm gonna save these comments for after.
Eric:Oh.
Sara:I've changed my mind. She says that she was caught up in her crossword puzzle and asks if he might know a 4 letter word for rat. And he immediately says, Tony claims it was the 1st thing that came to mind. I looked it up because I was curious about what Mhmm. The actual answer might be. And according to Merriam Webster dictionary, the most common 4 letter word for the animal is vole, which is a mouse like rodent. But if you're looking for synonyms for rat, meaning like an informer, think, narc, or toad would also work. So Okay. Because I was like, what actually
Eric:I wouldn't have thought of, but okay.
Sara:Because when you're doing a crossword and you ask for it, like, obviously, it's meant to set up a joke, but I thought, well, there's gotta be an answer. Otherwise, shoot. They would. So I yeah. 4 letter word for rat. Either think, narc, toad, or vole. Yeah. So she says nice try. Won't change the subject. He asked what subject was that? And she says the bimbo in their honeymoon bed.
Eric:Okay. Well, what about the bimbo whose tonsil she was tickling? I mean Right? Convenient for her to just kind of forget all that and blame Steele for everything or Steele and Shannon for everything. I mean, it's
Sara:just Himbo. Himbo. Let's let's be let's be politically correct here. Himbo and bimbo.
Eric:Okay. Yeah. Actually, that's what I do have in my notes. I just I just glossed over it because I was just so incensed.
Sara:She goes to put her headphones back, but he grabs her hand, and they sit back. He admits the situation appears incriminating. She says, try nauseating. And he assures her that whatever happened between him and Shannon was over a long time ago. She asks if he happened to tell her that he to tell her that to sorry. Tell her that. I should have emphasized that. And he says repeatedly, of physical violence. What else could I do? And she's kind
Eric:of There's always physical violence.
Sara:I wouldn't I wouldn't go that far, but sure. She's at a loss for words, and she says she picked the wrong time to show up. And he says that brings him back to the 4 letter word for rat. And she tells him nothing happened between her and Tony on the beach. Okay. This conversation takes 2 seconds to clear up, and they haven't had it yet. And it's been, well, at least a day, if not more, because you had the you know, after the walk on the beat, you're like, she played tonsil hockey with Tony. She, as far as we know, went home. Sorry. That's what we call it in Canada. She she went back to her loft, and they they were like, they weren't together. And then they came into the office, got the fake case. They spent that whole time separated. Then they went off to catch the plane to LA or to England. This could if she had just stuck, like okay. She, 1st of all, hadn't kissed Tony. That was the 1st major mistake. But if she had just come back to his apartment and they sat down and had this very conversation, we could have avoided all of that nonsense. Because it literally takes 2 seconds for him say she means nothing and her to say he means nothing. And they seem back on the same page now and ready to get the honeymoon shenanigan started again. And it's very frustrating when it's like, this was 2 seconds of communication that you guys could have had. Instead, Laura behaves like a child and kisses Tony. He behaves like a child and doesn't tell her what he's doing where where Shannon's like, ugh. Both of you Yeah. Just need to sit down and be grown ups. Grown ups. And and here too here
Eric:is a failure to communicate.
Sara:It really is. Because here too, he has the chance to tell her that Tony is not an archaeologist. Why is he protecting him here? It doesn't make any narrative sense.
Eric:Well, maybe he's just trying to avoid making her angry out of fear that if he reveals the truth about Tony to Laura, she'll either accuse him of jealousy and trying to make Tony look bad, or she'll get mad at Tony for having lied to her and then take it out on Steele for having delivered the message.
Sara:I mean, sure. But at the same time, here's somebody that has inserted themselves into their lives who is not who he says he is and who could potentially make things difficult for him because he knows that their marriage is in question.
Eric:But see, when I'm gonna get in for this. Okay. Don't take this personally. When women get
Sara:angry begins well.
Eric:When women get angry, you nobody is safe.
Sara:He's only saying this because he's in Alaska, everybody. I either way, this with Tony having the knowledge that their marriage is in question, you'd think that Steele might wanna give her a heads up
Eric:that he's But not what he says he but perhaps self preservation is a more appropriate move at the moment.
Sara:And she then she says that nothing happened on the beach because she didn't want it to. And that's I like that she adds that. And not because it's it's redundant. It is kind of redundant because, obviously, something could have happened if she had wanted it to. It's clear that Tony is interested.
Eric:Unfortunately, it kind of begs the follow on question. Well, if it didn't happen at the beach, where did it happen? You know? Okay.
Sara:I I I think we're supposed to assume that that's, like, implied that nothing has happened between them. But the fact that she is saying to him because I didn't want it to. I am not interested in him, and she's kind of trying to reassure him because her actions were arguably far worse than his. He wasn't making out with Shannon right in front of her. He didn't do that. Like, he he hit her, which was stupid, but it wasn't and and she does she yes. She kissed him, but he she launched herself at him. He didn't he he pulled her away. He said no. Like, he did all the right things aside from not telling her that she was there. Yes. And she deliberately provoked him by kissing Tony. So I think this 1 needed a little bit of added reassurance. So I'm glad she she made that distinction. And then at the rate they're going, they'll be celebrating their silver wedding anniversary before they consummate their relationship, which I kind of like that. Yes. That's funny. She says business before pleasure, and he agrees that that has certainly been their motto. And she says, compared Laura, why would you do this? Why would you say this? She says, compared to what we went through in Mexico, returning a stolen painting should be a piece of cake. What is wrong with you? What is wrong with you? You never do that. No. You never say, at least, you know, it it could it be worse or
Eric:Don't don't don't ever tempt fate because fate has no self control.
Sara:Yeah. It's gonna smack you down. And then Steele adds to this by saying, hopefully, we may be able to dispatch this case rather quickly. Well, there's the guarantee that that's not gonna happen. Oh, yes. She holds up her glass and then and says to to a honeymoon in London, and they kiss. So Yes. We've kind of got them resetting the characters for, you know, round 2 of bat around the couple. Mhmm. And we've got inside the airport. We see another man in a bowler hat, another mysterious man in a bowler hat. They seem to just follow him around.
Eric:Yeah. And this guy looks a bit sketchy. He does. I'm sorry. Yeah. He turns out to be
Sara:A solicitor.
Eric:Okay. I guess.
Sara:Why not just come up to him? Why follow him around?
Eric:Yeah. Well, I I got another question about that here in just a little bit. But, yeah, he he looks sketchy.
Sara:He does look sketchy, and and he looks as if he's about to reproach, like, approach them when Laura comes up and says that she just talked to Mildred. She got them into the Saint John Hotel in the Honeymoon suite, and I looked up this hotel. Mhmm. Because I was curious, and it is a nice place. So to give you an idea about what their rooms go for, let's see. I'm gonna try to see if I can make a reservation. Let's go for the executive suite. I'm not actually gonna do that. Reservations. Yes. Me too. Oh, it's gorgeous. Really pretty. Large comfortable bed, large windows, separate seating lounge for relaxing or working, digital safe, an ample storage space, modern en suite bathroom, premium toiletries, rainfall shower, hair dryer, in room amenities, etcetera. Let's see how much this goes for. I'm gonna try to book it for I don't know. Let's say let's go for September. Why not? Let's go September 15 to the 16th.
Eric:What is that over a weekend?
Sara:I just wanna see what it costs for 1 night. No. This is during the week.
Eric:Okay.
Sara:So let's search and see what the room is going for in 2026 so that we know what they roughly what they would have paid. Because I don't see a honeymoon suite specifically. Oh, wow. That is cheaper than I thought. Far cheaper than I thought for oh, wait. These are the twin rooms and double rooms. These are the classic. I wanna go all the way up to the executive suite here. Let's keep going. Let's keep going.
Eric:Top top notch. Gotta go top of the line.
Sara:Executive room.
Eric:No 2nd rate stuff for Steele.
Sara:Yeah. So according to this, the executive rooms are going for about still cheaper than I thought. £300 a night. So if you do
Eric:need real money.
Sara:Like, that would be about I'm not sure what the exchange rate is. The last time I checked, it was, like, roughly double in Canadian. I don't know what it would translate to American, but it'd be roughly, like, $600 a night. But yeah. So that's the
Eric:£300 and dollars would be 409 Okay. 0.23 So
Sara:not quite double, but still a little bit more.
Eric:That's that's not that's not an outrageously
Sara:outrageous price, but it's
Eric:it's expensive.
Sara:Yeah. Because I used to work for well, they're Marriott Bonvoy now, but it used to be Starwood Hotels. Starwood got swallowed up by Marriott. So you're talking, like, the Sheraton's and the 4 Points, etcetera. And I used to work for the call center there, and I would book rooms in New York routinely for 900 like, 900, $1,000 a night. And people didn't blink. Were just like, yeah. I wanna get this room and this I'm like, okay.
Eric:Well, like here in Anchorage during tourist season, which, you know, I I wish we could have tourist season without tourists.
Sara:Same.
Eric:During during during tourist season, if I can get it out, I understand that the it's like a basic room at, like, your hotel 6 or some of the more upper midline, like Wyndham brands, go for anywhere from, like, $2.50 to $400 a night for just the basic room.
Sara:Yeah. Yeah. The hotel prices have shot way up in the last little while. So, anyway, that's if anybody's wondering what they're paying for that room, whatever the equivalent of that would have been in the eighties is what they're paying.
Eric:So Not not not offensively expensive, but
Sara:not hotel. It is a really nice hotel. So he's encouraged by that, and he says, well, we better not waste any time. So she tells him to go look for Lindstrom at the Thames Gardens Hotel, and he will check the local art scene. Or she sorry. She'll check the local art scene. I I missed a pronoun somewhere. Sorry. Yes. He tells. Right. There's where I screwed up. She says, after lucky, we may have this wrapped up by the end of the day. He grabs his bags and says, we'll try for noon. Oh, come on, guys. Really? You're just ensuring that you're gonna make this harder on yourselves. Yes. So we get a shot of the streets of London with the red double decker buses, which I love, and those black cabs. We see 1 cab in particular driving down the streets past various well known areas and finally up to the hotel. Laura, we see her walk up to the front desk, and, she tells the man she is looking for a friend of hers who was staying here, Eric Lindstrom. The clerk looks up the name and says he doesn't see him there. Terribly sorry. She says there must be some mistake. He should be in the Presidential Suite. Clerk says he's fairly sure the person in the Presidential Suite is not her friend. Laura says Eric is a famous novelist. Maybe he's going by his pen name. So she's fishing here, but the clerk says Mhmm. Sheikh Abu Hassan, which is obviously not the name Laura expected to hear. So she
Eric:says No.
Sara:Perhaps not. And she thanks him. Yes.
Eric:Well, I mean, that's you know, we've commented about in the past how Laura is not good at undercover work when she's planning it, but she does okay when she's off the cuff. This was a good off the
Sara:cuff response. It was. Yeah. Yeah. It just it just wasn't the right type
Eric:of name. The right 1. She was
Sara:like yeah. And then we've got a star Trek cameo here. Oh, yes. Forgot that he was in this, and I absolutely adore it.
Eric:Miles O'Brien.
Sara:Yeah. He goes to a dark star.
Eric:Space 9.
Sara:Called the Red House with coal mania as as his contact. And poor Miles O'Brien, if you watch if you watch Deep Space 9, almost every episode, they're doing something nasty to him. He's either getting kidnapped, tortured, or whoever. So he he doesn't fare much better here. But we actually watched the movie Con Air last night, and he's in that as well. And he he plays a character who is DEA. He's a DEA. He's he's sending in 1 of his agents on this plane full of convicts to try to get information from a a drug dealer. Mhmm. And he drives this really fancy car. And at 1 point, John Cusack's character, who's kind of like his foil, steals his car, and then they tie a rope around the plane to the car. And so when the plane takes off, there goes his beautiful fancy car up into the sky. It's just like, what kind
Eric:of plane was it? I because if it was something like a Cessna,
Sara:no. No. It was a big it was a big plane. Like, we're talking because it's supposed to be transporting these, like, prisoners. So they're in cages and stuff like that. It was yeah. Anyway, not really relevant. So he's in this dive bar, and he's there with Miles O'Brien. I mean, Cole Meaney. And he tells Steele he comes highly recommended as they go and sit down. Steele is in his Johnny Todd persona. He says it pays to have friends in low places. We see the man with the bowler hat is still watching him again. I don't know why he's stalking him.
Eric:Wait. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Did Steele not notice?
Sara:Yeah. That's
Eric:too being followed by a guy in a bowler hat.
Sara:So yeah. Agreed. This is and he's really out of place in this bar. It's just he could not be more out of place. The man says, speaking of paying, how much are they talking about? Steele holds up his hand and says 5 zeros plus his finer's fee. The man asks if the painting has a name, and he pulls out the picture. The man identifies it, Boy with Flute. Steele asks if he knows where the lad's hiding, and the man says he does. Steele asks, can you get it? The man says it depends. And he asks, on what? The man says on whether the Russians will allow it. And he does a double take. The Russians?
Eric:Okay. Okay. Again, how how does Steele not know this? I mean, what what sort of a thief is he that he didn't know this, especially after the guy says it's been hanging there for, you know, 200 years or or however long it's been?
Sara:My only I'm gonna guess it's given that this is kind of a painting they invented as far as we're aware because I tried to find out if it was a real painting. I couldn't find anything.
Eric:If within the world of Remington's steel, he should have known.
Sara:I'm gonna guess it's maybe not exactly the Mona Lisa. Like, this is 1 that's you know? And and, also, you could all you could also ask the question, why didn't Mildred know this too? Because, theoretically, they would be looking up this painting or doing some background research on it. The Yeah.
Eric:That's true too.
Sara:I'm assuming could be covered by the fact that Steele asked her to focus on Tony. And she was so focused on digging up dirt on Tony that she didn't and maybe he was so distracted by Shannon that he didn't really have a lot of time to really think about or look at the painting too closely. He was just I mean, this is really the 1st I think he's even well, he Laura probably showed him the picture on the plane, but other than that, he hadn't even seen it. He was just kind of, like, popping in and out of her investigation. So I don't know. I'm I'm gonna still. I'm happy to hand wave that 1. But yeah. Sure you are. The man tells him the painting's been hanging in the Moscow Museum for the last 300 years, and still is even more surprised. 300 years? Angrily, the guy stands up and calls him a bloody copper. And he accuses Steele of trying to set him up with fencing a stolen painting, which that's even more ridiculous because if he were a cop trying to catch him in the act of fencing, you'd think he'd ask him about a painting he could actually, you know, get his hands on.
Eric:Yeah. Because simply only that, but I I presume that there is some equivalent in The UK as there is in The US of something called entrapment. Yeah. Yes.
Sara:Yeah. Exactly. Like, you well, but I guess we're not we're supposed to assume that Cole Meaney's character is not the, sharpest tool in the shed. You know? He's not the slickest hockey stick on the ice. So Yeah. Yeah. Steele says it's a he says it's a misunderstanding. An honest mistake, no hard feelings, but then he's surrounded. And he's shoved into another guy's arms who punches him. He manages to punch back. Then he hits poor Cole Meanie, poor Miles O'Brien, kicks him to the other man, then laughs until the other man turns around and yells at the other man to get him. And his smile disappears as he runs.
Eric:Like, he's gonna stand there and admire his handiwork?
Sara:I know. I know. He's just like, man. He's like, oh, crap. He's out the door. And then we had the entire time, we see this buddy in the bowler hat still watching.
Eric:Oh, yes.
Sara:Or still watching. He runs out of the door into an alleyway. The men chase after him. We see him running down the street. He's about to get caught when a white car pulls up and yells for him to get in. He does, and they're able to get away from the men. Now beggars can't be choosers, but that's awfully convenient.
Eric:Oh, yes.
Sara:He thanks the man driving, and the man driving asks him if he's Remington Steele. Fearing he might have gone from the frying pan to the fire,
Eric:Steele says,
Sara:he doesn't suppose that was a lucky guess. The man says, sorry, and shows Steele his ID saying he's not out of the woods yet. The ID says his name is HR Rigby, which is come on. That's like the most uptight British name you could pick. And that he's from immigration and naturalization. And here's the thing. And a couple of people brought this up in the Steele Watchers Facebook group. There are so many plot holes in this whole fake marriage immigration ploy thing that it's, like, it's hard to even point them all out. Like, for example, if his passport's fake, they're not going to let him get like, they're they're gonna how can you get married when you don't have any legitimate ID? That the only the ID that you have, government issued ID that you have is is phony, and they know it's phony. How can you be allowed to leave the country when your your immigration status is under question mark? How can you how could he travel? What passport did he use? Like
Eric:Well, if he's being deported and he's known to be a UK citizen, a British citizen, I don't know if they would necessarily need a passport to repatriate him back to the country he came from.
Sara:No. But he's not he wasn't being deported. He was just traveling. Same with same with when they went to Mexico. Like, they're this guy's immigration
Eric:flag it then. They've Tony again, Tony is behind this whole thing. He wants Steele in Britain. So he made sure that Steele's passport, fake though it was, wasn't flagged.
Sara:Fair enough. There's just so many like, it just anyway.
Eric:Yeah. I mean, when you have to to work this hard to explain the holes, it's yeah. It's it's not good. No.
Sara:Anyway, at a large building, we see mister Rigby. He's leading Steele down a corridor. He asked if he minds telling him what this is all about. But Rigby says this way, he leads Steele into a conference room where he introduces him to a 4 letter word for rat. Steele sees Tony sitting at the end of a long table and somewhat ironically says, I didn't catch your name. Tony pretends to introduce himself again. Steele smirks saying, I bet your friends call you Tony. Rigby tells him, mister Roselli is from US immigration and Steele says, immigration? Look like he looks like an archaeologist to me. I I I will say this. I said it before, and I'll say it again. I love him and Tony together. I don't love the Laura stuff, but him and Tony together are comedy gold. They are funny. They play off each other. It's enjoyable to me. I like watching the 2 of them go at 1 go at each other. I'm not in a yeah. Shush all you people. I didn't mean it like that. Tony pretends to introduce himself again, like, oh, sorry. I said that right. Yes. Tony pretends not to hear the implication and asks if he is married to an American citizen. And Steele says, yes. They just got back from their honeymoon in Mexico. And then he again sarcastically adds, should have been there. And Tony ignores, again, the jibe and clarifies, your wedding was performed on a fishing trailer. And Steele says, yeah. The Kiwi do for you the Kiwi 2 was booked, which I I just love his sense of humor here. Tony is keeping a straight face, and Steele's just coming with the quips. Tony says, according to the ship's manifest, the man who married them cleans fish for a living. Says, yes. He's very good at it too. Tony says, well, then he wasn't the captain, and Steele points out that he was vested with the rights and privileges of acting captain at the time. Tony points out that they have a marriage license, but there's no record of him applying for 1. And Steele says, well, it was obviously misplaced by an incompetent, deceitful bureaucrat. I'm sure you're familiar with the kind.
Eric:Yep.
Sara:I love it. I love it. Tony says their blood test was certified by a doctor who apparently retired to Florida 4 years ago. Still says, yep. Just popped in for the day. Tony says, well, you seem to have an answer for everything, and Still replies that he has nothing to hide. Tony asks if he has an answer for this statement made by a, and he pretends not to be able to make out the signature, gets up and shows it's a Steele. And you see the look on his face just change. Brosnan does this really well. Because, like, up until this point, he's appeared pretty unflappable. Like, he he seems in control of the situation. He's not worried about Tony. He's got leverage on him as well. And then he looks at the sheet, and his jaw kind of ticks a little bit. His voice wavers slightly as he hands it back saying, Shannon Wayne. Now he looks nervous. And Tony, looking smug and triumphant, says, it's a shame it's not in hieroglyphics, but perhaps he can decipher its true meaning anyway. Oh. Goes back, sits down in his chair, and Tony tells him, well, that about covers it. You're free to go. Steele looks at him suspiciously knowing it can't be that that easy. As Tony says, thank you for your time and congratulations on your marriage. He asked mister Rigby to show mister Steele out, and the camera cuts back to Tony watching and sort of like the zoom in with the look on his face.
Eric:Rubbing his hands. Yeah.
Sara:If he had a mustache, he'd be twirling at you. Then we've got the Saint John's Hotel. Laura's checking in. She asked if mister Steele has checked in yet. The clerk says no, but the gentleman in the bowler hat has been persistently inquiring about him. He is the worst stalker ever.
Eric:Yes.
Sara:Laura looks over and he she sees the man. Getting suspicious herself, she thanks the woman and goes to speak to him. She introduces herself and says that she understands he's looking for Remington Steele and that she is Mrs. Steele. The man looks at her and says he doesn't know what game she's playing, but it won't work with him. Laura is surprised and asks what he's talking about. He tells her she's an impostor and he has no business with her. He says, good day, and she he goes and goes to leave. She protests and says, wait, insisting that she is missus Remington Steele. He tells her, if she continues with this charade charade, he will be forced to call management and have her removed. Laura, this would not this would not go over. This is not a good look in 2026. I'm just gonna say that. She throws her things down and begins unbuckling her blouse, or sorry. Undoing the buttons on her blouse. Unbuckling. That makes no sense. She dares the man to call them, and he asked what she's doing. She says she's getting ready to scream rape. Oh. I mean, I get it. She's trying
Eric:It happens. I mean, women don't hit me for this, but women make false accusations.
Sara:Well, this is the thing. That's why I don't like it being used in a way that's sort of like we're supposed to agree with her. You know what I mean? Like, the she's our she's our our point of view. We're supposed to align with her. She wants to know what this guy's up to. He's trying to walk away. And so instead of using some other means of keeping him there, she she makes that threat, which I don't I don't think she would've actually done it, but it's not it it's not great.
Eric:It's not great. It would've been better if she could've done some other method
Sara:of Yes. Ready to accuse you of stealing my purse, something like that. Something that's not gonna get them on a registry for life. You know what I mean? Yeah. Because we were watching a movie the other day called The Wizard. I don't know if you've ever heard of this 1, it's Yep. 1980 I think it was '85 or '86, something like no. It was a little later in the eighties because I had Fred Savage in it, the kid from The Wonder Years. And it's a movie about this kid who is autistic. Although he's not explicitly said to be autistic, it's clear that that's what he is. And he runs away because he's trying to get back to this place where his twin sister died, and he doesn't have the verbal ability to tell people that. And so Fred Savage's character, his older brother, he goes after him, and they discover he's really good at video games. And they basically try to get across the country by playing video games and taking people's money and getting to California so he can play in this big video game tournament. And at 1 point, the parents trying to find the kids send this investigator to find him, but this guy's a real sleazeball. Like, he will stop at nothing to get these kids. It doesn't matter who gets in his way. And he's kind of an awful person. And at 1 point, he just grabs the little kid, doesn't tell him who he is, doesn't like, this kid's freaking out. He's he he you know, and the kid's not knowing that the parents sent him or anything. They think that this guy's just kidnapping him. The girl that's traveling with Fred Savage yells, he touched my breast. And, of course, that turns the crowd on the guy and they chase after him. And that is probably the only time that I would say, yeah. Okay. That's because it's a little kid. It's a grown man. You you're you're fighting for your survival here. But other than that
Eric:Or you think you are.
Sara:At least Or you think you are. Yeah. So, like, yeah, that's not acceptable. Anyway, the the man, he he looks shocked, and he says, you wouldn't dare. And she pulls her blouse out of her pants and says, watch me. Ugh. Again, don't love it. He changes his tune pretty fast, though, and hands her his card. Again, why wouldn't he just tell like, I guess because he thinks that she's not really Steele's wife, but still.
Eric:Yeah. I mean, if if she's not Steele's wife, she has no business getting the information, and he has probably a legal obligation not to share that information with her.
Sara:Yeah. It's he pulls out his card and gets to
Eric:her system. At the point that he changes his mind, he should probably have at least asked for some sort of evidence, you know, ID proof, something to but, no, he after putting up this protest, I'm not going to do that because you're obviously a fake. Oh, I'm gonna spill my guts.
Sara:To be fair, she wouldn't have had any ID that proves that she's married to Steele because she doesn't have anything with her name altered.
Eric:Well, I mean
Sara:Like, all of
Eric:She could have done she could have gone in to DMV and gotten a a name change done.
Sara:Not in the time that they've had since the wedding. Like, they've been everywhere. And that kind of thing wouldn't happen overnight, especially in the eighties. It would take a while.
Eric:Well, 1st of all, DMV in the eighties probably wasn't as busy as DMV is now. I mean, now you have to make an appointment to go see them.
Sara:Well, they yeah. But they'd still have to mail it out. Like, it wouldn't.
Eric:No. Not a driver's license. No. They just issue it right there. You go in. You take your marriage license. They
Sara:went straight to Mexico. They came back. They had the dinner. Then they went to London. Like, they haven't had time to go to the DMV. She's been busy.
Eric:Oh, so, yeah. Whatever.
Sara:He hands her his card, which says, Roderick Smithers, solicitor at Bumbridge, Cleethrops, and Cothelswate. Wow.
Eric:That sounds almost dirty.
Sara:I know. Right? I'm wondering what those what those, like, positions or something. Well, unimpressed, Laura tells him, congratulations. What do you want with my husband? Smithers tells him that he's here to inform him that he has just inherited £1,000,000, and she looks sufficiently shocked. We switch over to a where are they? What what what is this place that they're at where they're shooting arrows and bows?
Eric:Well, it appears to be some sort of a castle, a castle.
Sara:A castle.
Eric:A castle. Yes. I I don't know. It it could be somebody's estate that Tony's in with that, you know, he's out there visiting? I I don't know. It could do you have public public facilities like this that have castles there and you can go in and do archery? I don't know. Aware of.
Sara:And this is the thing. A, where the heck are they? B, how did Steele know that Tony was gonna be there?
Eric:Yeah. Well Like, he I mean, they've horse riding horseback riding. They've got a a a nice long walkway that looks like, an entrance up to a public type building because it's a really wide Yeah. Know, market levels. It's very confusing and, yes, so many questions.
Sara:Right? Because we see Tony shooting a bow and arrow at a target randomly, and Steele walks up and tells him nice shot. Archaeologist, immigration official, and he says, who who are you now? Robin Hood? Which I found funny.
Eric:Maybe Tony sent him a message saying, hey. You got questions? I've got answers. I'd still like to
Sara:know where they are. I'd still like to know what this place is because they yeah. He picks up a bow and Steele puts an arrow against his chest, telling him enough games. He's been bird dogging him since Mexico trying to figure out about his marriage. Tony says he didn't turn him in, did he? And Steele tells him, well, that's what worries me.
Eric:Yeah. Really?
Sara:He wonders why Tony didn't throw him to the wolves as he takes a bow and notches the arrow. Tony says he needs him, and Steele immediately understands blackmail. He loses the arrow and gets it slightly closer than Tony's target. Tony compliments him on the shot and tells him he wants him to deliver a package for him. Steele says, wouldn't a messenger service be cheaper? And Tony says it's too delicate for that. Steele asks, what's in the message? And Tony says he 1st needs to know if he's in. Steele asks, what happens if he isn't? And Tony says, well, yeah, I hope you like England. Once America deport someone, that's it. He shoots his arrow as well. Steele wonders why him. And Tony says, well, you're an internationally famous detective. He is a great rep, and he's here on a case. Steele says back, which you conveniently contrived. Tony says if he had asked him straight out, what would he have said? And Steele asks what Tony thinks as he shoots another arrow getting the same spot as Tony's. Tony asks, tells Steele that he thinks he gets his point. And Steele asks, well, how can he be certain Tony isn't gonna recruit him after all this? Tony says, you pull this off. You'll get Shannon Wayne's statement. You won't have any more problems with immigration. Shoots another arrow, gets a bull's eye.
Eric:Promises. Promises. Yeah. Kidding in writing.
Sara:Right? And Steele asks, what about Laura? Tony, what about her? Steele asks, well, what good does it have to immigration what good is it to have immigration off my tail if you're still after her switch? Yeah. I like that. I like that. Tony says, I see, and Steele asks if it's a deal. Tony says, deal. Just a Steele shoots another arrow and does the whole Robin Hood thing splitting Tony's down the middle, which I still don't think is actually possible. I don't think it's possible to do that. I think you'd probably end up just bouncing the arrow off the other arrow, but whatever. Well, it if
Eric:you look at the video in slow motion, it does appear that it's been faked, but it's hard to say. I mean, I've never done archery before.
Sara:Okay.
Eric:I just didn't they do appear to be wooden shafts. So if they're wooden shafts, they would they would be splitable.
Sara:Apparently, they did a Mythbusters episode, and it is not possible.
Eric:No. I'm I'm sorry. I'm sorry. That is not a valid source. I I love the show. I love Mythbusters, but I know for a fact that they get it wrong. They did 1 about hitting a moose, and and if you hit it fast enough, it you know, you can drive under it. I don't remember exactly what it was. But, basically, they said if you hit a moose, you're totally in your car, and that's the end of the end of the story. And I know for a fact, firsthand observation, that that was not true. So a lady back this was back in the nineties. She was driving 1 of those little tiny, really low sports cars like a, you know, Triumph style car, you know, a z, something really low. And we were coming up to a intersection with a light, and the light started to change. And most of us slowed down. 1st of all, there there was a light starting to change. 2nd of all, there was a moose starting to walk across the road on the other side of the intersection. Well, this woman decided she didn't wanna have to stop for the light, so she gunned it. And she hit that moose, and it did a 3 60 above her car and landed on the road behind her as she passed underneath it. Did not damage the car, except maybe the it may may have damaged the bumper, but it did not land on the car. Mythbusters got it wrong because their analog for the moose did not have the same motion of of joints and limbs as the real thing. They get it wrong. It's great entertainment, but it's not scientific.
Sara:You are correct because I found a website called Centenary Archers, and it counteracts the mythbusters episode. It says, amongst tales ascribed to the mythical Robin Hood, 1 of the most well known is the shooting of an arrow that splits another arrow down the middle. Despite what Mythbusters declared, it is indeed possible according to this, and this is an archery website.
Eric:Mhmm.
Sara:In archery, we consider it a Robin Hood. Shocker. If the 2nd arrow
Eric:is embedded come up with that name? Do they say? I don't know.
Sara:If the 2nd arrow is embedded down the length of the 1st arrow shafts, Most consider it doesn't really count if the 2nd arrow doesn't remain attached or just destroys the knock at the end of the arrow. Performing 1 is similar to golf's hole in 1. For some archers, it's a once in a lifetime experience. Again, similar to golf, some are more likely than others. Example, on shorter holes or distances it becomes more common, at longer distance it becomes near impossible. Other factors are also at play in archery that can make things easier and harder. For instance, wider arrows are slightly easier. The closer the distance to the target obviously makes it easier too. Then comes the bow type. Some bows are designed to be more accurate, compound bows down to the lesser accurate long bows, etc. Example, a Robin Hood of an arrow at 20 meters is still super impressive, but for example, it's even more impressive if done by a longbow archer than by a compound bow archer. The general consensus is that it's at least a 4,000 to 1 chance of happening. Here are some of the Robin Hoods that have occurred at our club and or shop by our club members. So I'll just give 1 example because they've got a few here. But the most remarkable 1 perhaps anywhere was Robert Oryk on the 08/22/2022. Shot at 20 meters with a compound bow, Robert managed to get a double Robin Hood. He consecutively shot 3 arrows, 1 into the back of the other producing an arrow that was made of 3 arrows. Conservatively, the chances of that happening are 16,000,000 to 1. He had only purchased the arrows the day before too. Don't believe it? You can and there's a picture here. You can see the very long arrow in our clubhouse. And there's literally 3 arrows, like, 1 after the other. It that's crazy. So I guess it is possible. That was a journey I just went on.
Eric:I I hope he I hope he got a lot of free beers out of that 1
Sara:because kidding. Right?
Eric:He lost he lost a lot of money in those areas. And
Sara:there's another 1 here that says Chris Kurse Lake managed to get his 1st ever Robin Hood at 60 meters shooting with a compound bow. That's a pretty epic shot at that distance. He also did it with his 1st 2 shots, and that was in 2023. So there, it is possible. Pretty crazy, though.
Eric:Yes. Yeah.
Sara:Yeah. So when Steele does it, he he kinda sarcastically says, Anthony, old chap, I seem to have split your shaft, which I like. He hands the bow back, kisses his hand, and walks away. Inside, the pinkest hotel room ever. What is going on in that room?
Eric:It's well, I mean, it's pretty pink. But it's not that pink. I mean, the the walls are very, very pale. I mean, it's just blush.
Sara:It's like Barbie's hotel room.
Eric:It's No. It's not that bad. It's not that bad. At least not on the screen that I'm looking at it at.
Sara:Laura comes in. She hears the water running. She smiles thinking Steele is in the tub. We see inside the bathroom feet sticking out of the tub, and Laura comes in asking if he needs someone to scrub his back, and she gasps as and again, I wish this I wish this had been Felicia because that smug smile and then and I thought you didn't like me. Ugh. We were cheated. Okay? That would have been hilarious, especially after Laura comes in, knocks her feet into the water, shuts off the tub, and asks what she's doing there. I just I would've chef's kiss, that would've been perfect. But either way, it's still pretty funny. Shannon tells her that she should give up saying that Dougie and her are star crossed lovers, and they have been ever since Hong Kong. Can't keep from fondling each other. Laura crosses her arms and asks if she's sure it's not his inheritance she'd rather fondle. Shannon plays dumb. Inheritance? What inheritance? Laura says there's a solicitor in the lobby who told him a tall, dark haired woman claiming to be missus Steele was in his office last week. Shannon says she doesn't know what she's talking about, and Laura suggests inviting him up so she can refresh her memory. Nervously, Shannon Oh, says wait
Eric:a minute. Wait a minute.
Sara:The memory just kind of comes pops back. It's funny how Yeah. That She says, vaguely remember something about an inheritance. Laura, I thought you might. And Shannon says she also remembers Dougie telling her about a sham marriage to keep him from getting deported. Ouch. Laura and I get like,
Eric:it No. And he didn't he he didn't even have the excuse that he was drunk at the time.
Sara:No. No. He that we we talked about how that was kind of a stupid thing to do for him to trust that Shannon would not use that information against him. And, again, this would this would hurt even more if it were Felicia.
Eric:Yes.
Sara:In this case, it's just kind of irritating that Mhmm. Shannon now has this information because she sits down and asks, what is it gonna take to get you out of our lives for once once and for all? Shannon says £50,000. Laura is like, you want us to buy you out? And then Shannon says she needs the money to buy back some rather revealing photographs of herself. Laura asks who has them, and she says Frederick Edward Sedgwick, the duke of Wallingford. Laura suspiciously
Eric:He's threatening to put put him on TikTok.
Sara:Yeah. Right? You're being blackmailed by a duke, and she says, a bankrupt duke. She leans over and asks if she if she helps get those pictures. Will she take her show on the road permanently? Shannon smiles and says, oh, if you're sure that you won't miss me too much, which again, come on. Who would have been so good? Yeah. Laura stands up, grabs the towel, and throws it at Shannon's face and tells her to dry off. She sinks back down into the tub with a smile. And I mean, I found Shannon supremely irritating in the last episode. In this 1, I kinda like her. Like, I'm kinda having fun with her. I can get on board with her here.
Eric:Well, only from the standpoint that Laura is able to be snide and sarcastic and Yeah. Dismissive and demeaning of her.
Sara:I think That
Eric:I like.
Sara:Again, once again, when you have Laura and Shannon or Tony and Steele, there's comedy there. And or when you have them on the same page where both of them have said, I'm not interested in this person and so that they're not behaving like jealous morons, there's comedy there. It's when they're doing the whole, you know, 5 seasons in. Oh, there's a woman at his bedroom. Laura's gonna get jealous. Come on. Like, let's let's yeah. So on a city bus, we see Tony sit down behind
Eric:I just I just had a question. I just had a question. How did they come up with the idea for double decker buses? I mean, what was the whole idea behind that?
Sara:That is an excellent question, and I'm gonna Google it now. With the idea for because I okay. If you've never ridden on a double decker bus, they are super fun. We used to have them in in London, Ontario, but they
Eric:like, that was wouldn't you?
Sara:Well, they were mainly, like, tourist things where they take people around and show them the city, but they they're long gone. They're still in The UK as just regular buses. So according to this, it just says, for us, stem from a practical need to carry more passengers through crowded city streets without making the vehicles too long. And we have a we have the what I call accordion buses where it's 2 buses stuck together by, like, that little middle part.
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:So I guess that's the Canadian equivalent of it. But if you look at and there's our website here, a brief history of the double decker bus. So I'm just gonna I I hope it's very brief. But, it's an icon to the sightseeing industry. 1828 Streets of Paris. Oh, I wonder if it was springtime and raining. Yeah.
Eric:It must have been.
Sara:The 1st ever double decker bus was actually a 2 level horse drawn carriage pioneered by a man named Stanislas Bowdry. Wow. Later inspired by Bowdry's idea and his success, an English gentleman known as George Schillebier bought the brought the omnibus to omnibus to London. Costing originally 1 shilling to ride, Schillabier's bus could hold up to 22 people. So then in the 19 twenties, they had the 1st engine powered version of the double decker bus, and it just kinda became a staple from there. So yeah. Cool. Good question. I didn't know. I had to look it up. Anyway, he sits down behind an older man who we later find out is Fitch, his double crossing superior Yes. Who's pretending to read a newspaper. And he tells him that Steele agreed, and Fitch asks if this doesn't work, he doubts he's gonna have a friend left in the entire department. Okay. Here's another question. Tony's American.
Eric:Mhmm.
Sara:Fitch is British intelligence.
Eric:Right. That's a yeah. I I was struggling to try and
Sara:They're 2 different organizations and and and historically did not always get along. Like, they weren't outright enemies, but didn't typically cooperate and and share information. So
Eric:Yeah. Why is he does It But he's does raise interesting questions as to
Sara:actually a British citizen? But he but he's not because he's working for American intelligence, and yet he's taking orders from British until I'm so confused.
Eric:Well, you know, he's on temporary assignment or was to the Brits or he's worked with them in the past. Or he could have, I suppose, a dual citizenship. I mean, he could be a double agent for all we know. You know?
Sara:He's Yeah. It's just He's because we assume like, I assumed he was supposed to be CIA. Or
Eric:Yeah. CIA would be the thing I would think.
Sara:So that just it's weird that he's got a British superior and that he he's he's taking orders from British intelligence and not
Eric:Well, you you can you can construct a scenario where he would be doing that if he's working on a case in cooperation with the British and and the British agency is taking the lead on it. But the way this guy talks, well, you won't have another friend in the agency.
Sara:In the Yeah.
Eric:It's like this you're part of this agency. You're you're you're a member. You're 1 of us.
Sara:Yeah. It's just very confusing. So he where am I? Sorry. And then Fitch says, that's your problem. You're always willing to risk it. Tony says he's the guy who he's the guy who lost 3 good agents and was banished to South America and took the rap for it. Fitch tells Tony, lower your voice. Tony continues saying nobody believed him when he said there was a mole in British intelligence. Fitch mildly says he's giving Tony the opportunity to prove he was right. Tony kinda grumbles better late than never and questions when he's gonna ask the doc get the documents. Fitch says all in good time as the bus comes to a stop. Tony doesn't like that answer, and he insists no now. Fitch says the difference between the 2 of them is that he breaks the rules Tony breaks the rules, and he makes them. He gets up, gets off the bus. Back at the at the Saint John's Hotel, we see Steele arriving in a cab. He gets out, pays the driver, and then sees Laura and Shannon get in a cab. He tells the next customers that he's the cab supervisor, and this one's due for inspection. He gets back in the cab and follows them, which is funny. So okay. I have some issues here with Wallingford Castle because I looked this place up. K? We see outside Wallingford Castle. Laura buys a ticket for her and Shannon and joins the tour group just as they're about to walk in. You don't need this is what pinged for me because most castles and museums in The UK are free. They're the trust the National
Eric:Trust 1.
Sara:Well, it is though because I looked into it. Because the National Trust pays for all of these sites so people can go and see them. Like, you don't have to pay to get into the British Museum or a lot of these castles. You just go. You can donate. There's a little box you can donate to, but it's not necessary to pay. So I was wondering, okay, would this have been the case in the eighties? Maybe you had to pay in the eighties. So I looked it up. And no, you don't need a ticket to explore the outdoor ruins, and technically they are supposed to be ruins, grounds of Wallingford Castle. Access to Wallingford Castle Gardens and the surrounding Castle Meadows is completely free of charge and open to the public daily. However, there are a few extra ways to experience the site. This is from our tourist site. And then if you want to see the castle's history model and historical artifacts, you can visit the local museum. Adult tickets for the museum are £6, which grants unlimited access for the whole season and children and children are free.
Eric:Okay.
Sara:But they're not going into the museum. They're going into the castle.
Eric:Well, now wait a minute. What you just got done saying was that all the stuff that's on the outside is free.
Sara:No. No. No. The castle is free too. The museum, which is separate from the castle, is
Eric:No. You read. You you you said the grounds and the the the other stuff, but it was all outside stuff.
Sara:The because the castle is ruins. It's not actually a castle. That's another thing that's kinda wonky about this.
Eric:Well, the whole interior of the castle is the museum.
Sara:I think they're supposed to be in the castle because they go into the duke's chambers and
Eric:stuff. Yeah. It the that's what I'm saying is that the entire inside of the castle is considered the museum. No. You can you can tour the outside. You can walk the grounds. You don't need a ticket to to do that. You can visit the fountains, see the gardens, and all this stuff. Everything that you mentioned was all outside stuff until you got to the museum, and the inside is literally the museum. Yes. It's a castle.
Sara:I'm pretty sure there is no inside, though. It's ruins. Yeah. It's ruins. There's no there's like, it's it's it's ruins. It's crumbling walls. Like, they they clearly weren't at Wallingford Castle. They couldn't have been. Because if you look at the pictures
Eric:Look. They're inside. They're
Sara:at the Okay.
Eric:In the room. They're at the desk. But
Sara:the actual castle doesn't have like, the inside is outside. It's it's falling apart. There's no, like, inside to it.
Eric:Well, maybe now there isn't, you know, especially if you were over there.
Sara:It's been ruins for for for hundreds of years. Like, is he Are you sure? Yeah. Yeah. I've been in
Eric:I don't know. The Russians might disagree. Trust
Sara:me on this. And they are supposed to be in the castle because the duke's 0.25 are in there. Like, where the duke lives, he wouldn't live in the museum. So not only are they not actually in like, they've chosen a site that is literally ruins, paying for something that you couldn't actually like, none of that interior is the castle or the muse. It couldn't it it literally could not be. So it's just funny that they that they did that because I've got the pictures You mean
Eric:kinda like the like the Pan Am flight that didn't fly on the day that they said it flew? Yeah.
Sara:Or or the fact that if you watch Braveheart and they have the battle of Sterling Bridge without a bridge, this is the same thing. This is because it's it's literally just like walls with no, like, inside. It's just it's ruins. And it also says here that you could get a guided 90 minute hot walk led by local experts. They depart from the museum and then, like, go to the castle grounds. Those require advanced booking. The grounds have been freely accessible for decades due to the following timeline. Following the 1972 demolition of a Victorian mansion built on the site, the descendants of the Hedges family gifted the Castle Gardens to the Wallingford Town Council in 1977. By 1987, the Castle Gardens section was already operating as a freely open public park managed by the local council. The only major change since 1987 is that surrounding Castle Meadows area was later purchased by South ox Oxfordshire District Council in 1999, expanding the footprint of the public. So it is 1 of the most the oldest and most historic castles, like, in all of England. If you click on, like, the Wikipedia here Mhmm. See here. It's established in the 11th century, and it became what historian Nicholas Brooks has described as 1 of the most powerful royal castles in the 12th and 13th centuries. Held for the empress Matilda during the civil warriors of the anarchy, it survived multiple sieges and was never taken. Over the next 2 centuries, it became a luxurious castle used by royalty and other immediate family after being abandoned as a royal residence by Henry VIII. The castle fell into decline. So we're talking hundreds and hundreds of years ago here. Refortified during the English Civil War, it was eventually slighted, I. E. Deliberately destroyed, after being captured by parliamentary forces after a long siege. The site was subsequently left relatively underdeveloped, and the limited remains of the castle walls and the considerable earthworks are now open to the public. Literally, all that's left is ruins. So they are not
Eric:What you're saying is
Sara:who they think they are.
Eric:So what you're saying is that TV lied to us?
Sara:Yes. I'm saying TV lied to us because this is not
Eric:I thought it was only the Internet that lied to us.
Sara:Whatever they went inside is not where they are. Anyway, that kind of I was like, that's not why is she paying? They wouldn't it wouldn't cost you money. And then I'm like, that's not right. So anyway, inside a room they are told is the formal dining room, and above a fireplace is the 16th century. Again, nothing none of this would have been the Flemish car carving depicting the coronation of the virgin queen or of the the coronation of the virgin, which I'm assuming is queen Elizabeth because she was called the virgin queen due to the fact that she refused to marry, because she didn't wanna share the crown. So yeah. I'm gonna and you wouldn't coronate I I it could also be a religious reference, but you wouldn't coronate Mary. So I'm assuming this is Elizabeth the 1st. Yeah. She was known as the as the virgin queen. She was the only surviving child of Henry the 8th and Anne Boleyn. Basically, like
Eric:Oh, I'm sorry. It just that line when you read it about the Coronation of the Virgin just made me think of a song from a Jerry Lewis movie.
Sara:Oh.
Eric:White Virgin of the Nile. A song from the movie Rockabye Baby. It's just it's a hilarious song.
Sara:She was, like, celebrated for her virginity, essentially, and which is sort of a myth. Yeah. I was gonna say it's kind of a myth. She basically, like she didn't get married because she didn't wanna give up the throne. But did she was she a virgin? Who knows? Probably not. But she never had any kids. So yeah. So yeah. Supposedly, that's on the wall that shouldn't be there. Laura looks around as the guide tells the group to follow them into the drawing room. She asks Shannon where the Duke's 0.25 are, and Shannon points to a door behind them saying, over here. They wait until the group is gone, then open the door, and the door would not be left unlocked. I'm sorry, but this is all wrong. Steele purchases a ticket, which he shouldn't be able to do, and tries to get inside, but he's blocked by a guard who says the tours leave every 15 minutes. He has to stand back and wait. Inside the duke's personal 0.25, excuse me, Laura and Shannon have to duck behind the door as they are almost seen by a guard. The guard leaves, and they continue to search for the Duke. They enter a massive dining room and go towards a small door at the end of it. Shannon tells her, He's in there. They open the door and they go inside, and Shannon gasps in terror as the duke's body is seen lying dead on the floor. Again, you wouldn't have these 0.25 just openly available to the public because, you know, people could come in and murder the duke that doesn't actually live there. But fine. So they see him dead on the floor and Shannon goes, the Greek, which what? They go over to the body. Shannon checks to see if he's dead. Beside Laura, you can see the safe has been emptied. Laura comments that he doesn't look Greek to me. And Shannon says, he's not the Greek. He's the duke. Laura, the duke's not Greek? Shannon says, no. The Greek's not the duke, which
Eric:is horrible. Poison is the Yes.
Sara:Literally, what I was thinking of was the vessel with the pestle the brew that is true. Yeah. It's great, though. The back and forth.
Eric:My wife and I watched that movie here a week or so ago. It's a good movie.
Sara:It's such a good movie, and they just the the Shannon and Laura, I just love it. I love this back and forth. And then Laura's like, get a hold of yourself. You're battling. Then she says, if this is the duke, who's the Greek? Shannon says, Nicholas Deirdopoulos, A racketeer, obviously, doesn't have a sense of humor. Laura asked why he would kill the duke, and Shannon says, for the gems. Like, what? What is happening here? Laura says, what?
Eric:And she says it like it's it's so obvious. How can you not know this?
Sara:Hello? It's for the gems. Duh. Like so Shannon says that she and the duke had an arrangement. He would get her into all the exclusive parties and she dumb Laura folds her arms and says, what? And Shannon sheepishly says, well, she would relieve the hosts of all their valuables, discreetly, of course. Laura surmises the Greek was 1 of her more recent victims, and Shannon concludes that now he has the photographs and he'll be after her. Laura asks, well, how does an indiscreet photograph implicate her? And Shannon says, because it's a picture of her wearing the earrings she took from the creek's safe. So I'm guessing it's the earrings and not much else. Yeah. Which makes me think of Titanic, you know, paint me like you're French girls. So she's wearing the giant necklace. You know?
Eric:Never seen it.
Sara:Oh, yeah. Well, anyway, other people will get that. Okay. The duke kept it as a hold on her. Laura tells her to give back the gems, and Shannon says, she doesn't have them anymore. Laura says, where are they? And again, sheepishly, Shannon says, well, a girl needs pin money. And I was curious as to where that phrase comes from because I hadn't heard that term before. And according to the website that I have a link for here, pin money is an English term that refers at the beginning of the 21st century to a small or insignificant sum of money, like spending money, to be used for trivial purchases. It formally referred to money a husband or guardian gave to a woman annually for her personal dress or expenses. 1 of the earliest references to pin money comes from a will dated in 1542 from York. In the Testamentia Iberocenzia, a selection of wills from the registry at York, the clause reads, I give my said daughter Margaret my lease of the parsonage of Kirkdale Church to buy her pins with all. By the 19th century in The US, the term pin money referred to supplementary income a woman made by selling her needlework. That makes sense. In The Netherlands, the term speldeguld or pin money dates back at least to the 15th century and was used to describe a small sum of money that was added to the price of a product or service for the benefit of the female members of the family. So, yeah, it appears that it came out of the 14th century. Another theory that says it came out of the 14th century that pins were expensive by the and by English law, they could only be sold on the 1st 2 days of January, so husbands would get their wives special money to purchase these items. But those aren't the
Eric:sell pins on the 1st 2 days of January? Talk about
Sara:I know.
Eric:Government intrusion
Sara:into people's
Eric:daily lives.
Sara:We think it's hard now. Could be worse.
Eric:What next? You can only use the toilet on Thursday?
Sara:Well, it is still illegal to drag a dead horse down Yonge Street in Toronto on a Sunday. So It's true.
Eric:Any other day of the week is fine.
Sara:Any other day, it's fine. That law is still on the books. So Laura rolls her eyes and says, let me get this straight. You conned me into helping you steal some evidence that directly incriminates you in a jewel theft ring? Shannon insists, it was just a little white lie. Laura gestures to the dead man saying, you call this a little white lie? They hear the footsteps and Shannon, shh, tells her someone's coming. We switch to another tour entering the formal dining room as the woman leading the tour gives the same speech. Steele is with them. We switch back to Laura and Shannon, stuffing the Duke's dead body into a suit of armor. No. No. No. No. There is no way in Hades that they would be able to do that in a time that they had to do it. Not to mention it miraculously fitting him because
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:The likelihood of that. Like, the the armor was made usually specifically for the person wearing it.
Eric:So Yes.
Sara:And even if they could he wouldn't stay
Eric:okay.
Sara:The guard comes in. He's shocked saying, you shouldn't be in here. These are the Duke's private parts. I'm that's a choice. That was a choice. A
Eric:word. Oh,
Sara:that was a choice. Yes. He tells them, out you go, and they rush to leave with Laura taking 1 last look at the suit of armor. Meanwhile, on the tour, the woman is pointing out a set of Georgian furniture with needlework that was popular in the 18th century, snooze central. They are a clatter somehow because that's in, like, 2 other rooms.
Eric:Mhmm. Well, you know, it's very echoey in there. Sound carries.
Sara:Yeah. Steele walks all the way back through the dining room and into the Duke's 0.25, which are apparently just open to the public for everybody Yes. To find him stuffed into the suit of armor. The guard comes in as Steele is examining the corpse, looks at Steele as if he's just caught him and says, well, ain't you Johnny on the spot? Steele tells him, I can explain this. And the guard says, you will, mate. You will. So yeah.
Eric:Well, mean, he's in a suit of armor. How could Steele have killed him? Right.
Sara:Just the whole yeah. Laura so we we switch over. Laura and Shannon return to the hotel, and Shannon is still panicking, saying, he's gonna kill me. He's gonna kill me. Laura says, he can't kill you if he can't find you. The phone rings, and Shannon immediately says, he's found me. Laura tells her to relax. No 1 knows you're here.
Eric:You know, a good slap across the face or or fist to the jaw at this point.
Sara:I just actually kinda love Laura's reaction. She's treating her like a particularly irritating toddler or, you know, a really stupid pet. She's just like, relax. No 1 knows you're here. Ugh. Shut up. You know? So the phone rings. She picks it up, and she's surprised to hear Mildred. She says, I can hardly hear you. And and asked where she is. Mildred, on a hotel bed in a very similar looking room, says, next door. Laura is surprised that she's next door. Mildred tells her that she has news for her that'll knock her socks off. Laura says, you couldn't tell me from LA? And Mildred says, no. You're gonna wanna hear this in person. Again, as you pointed out, who's minding the store? Yes. Mildred just decided to up and leave. Mhmm. Fred
Eric:Hey. Hey, Fred, come on in. You're you're running the shop today.
Sara:Right? Fred yeah. Fred's at the switch. He's handling the calls. He's like, ugh, this is not what I do. Laura sighs and tells Mildred to stay where she is. She hangs up the phone and goes to leave the room. Shannon panics and follows her. Don't leave me. She enters Mildred's room. Mildred, what is she doing here? Laura tells her, never mind, and asks what she's what she's doing there. Mildred says that she put on some overtime and on the on the computer, get this, the Lindstrom case is a fraud. Laura, I know that. Poor Mildred. She looks a bit crestfallen. You do? And she shakes it off. She says, that was just her openers. Get this. The boss has inherited 1000000 pounds from the Earl of Cleridge. Laura knows that too. Mildred, annoyed, says, oh, come on. Laura actually apologizes, like, sorry. Mildred's like, I've got 1 left. But then she stops herself saying, oh, but I can't tell you. No. No. You can't do that. You can't start and say, like, oh, what? Oh, no. I promise to do That is the most irritating thing in the world.
Eric:Like, It is if it's genuine. If it's genuine. True. Yeah. But this is a case of if you make me Yeah. Reveal it, I I I can say I I had no choice.
Sara:I can say I was coerced. Yes. Fair enough. Laura's annoyed. She says, why not? Mildred says she swore to the boss she wouldn't spill the beans. But she's eager to tell anyway because she leans in and she says, it's about the archaeologist.
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:Laura asks, Laura, how would you like a steerage ticket on the 1st flight back to LA? And Mildred, okay.
Eric:Okay. Now that's mixing your metaphors because I know. Because I was like, steerage on an airline.
Sara:What is steerage on an airline? But Mildred says, okay. Let's just say you dragged it out of me. We switch over to Steel's room who enters as the phone is ringing. He picks it up, and it's Tony on the other end. He says he knows it's late, but something came up. He assures Tony that he's just as eager to dispatch with him as he is. And, again, how the heck did Steele get out of out of how does Steele get out? He should be in it. Like, if he was a number 1 suspect in the killing of a nobleman, a British noble
Eric:Well they're
Sara:not just gonna
Eric:let him go. I mean, they're they once once they took a look at the the corpse and they figured out how the man was killed, they would know that he couldn't have he couldn't have done it. How? It wouldn't. Well, 1st of all, the man just kicked somebody out a few minutes earlier.
Sara:Oh, fair enough. Yeah.
Eric:And Steele wouldn't have had time enough to kill him and put him in the armor by himself.
Sara:Yeah. That's true. Still, I would anyway, he says he's just as eager to dispatch with Tony as he is. So he writes down the name of the club. And, of course, this is the typical write it down, leave it there for someone else to find. Only in this case, he's just in the other room. He did come back to take it, but by that point, it was too late. So he walks away leaving the paper there, goes into the bedroom. Laura comes in, looks around frustrated that he's still not there. So she thinks she goes over to the phone, sees the piece of paper. She takes it, shoves it in her pocket
Eric:and leaves.
Sara:Why did
Eric:she not why did she not actually walk through the room?
Sara:Yeah. I
Eric:mean, all she did is walk into the living room, say, I don't see him, so he must not be here.
Sara:Well, I guess she saw the piece of paper and assumed that's where he was.
Eric:You know what happens when you assume?
Sara:I know. I know. But that I I mean, I can sort of understand that 1 because if that's the piece of evidence in front of her, don't I probably wouldn't think to check the bedroom either. I would probably assume he wrote it down and and just left.
Eric:I would have probably checked the bedroom before I started looking at a notepad on the mantle of the fireplace.
Sara:Fair fair enough. Anyway, she she goes, and then he comes out of the bedroom afterwards, looks around, but she's not there. He goes over to the pad, looks down only to find the paper gone. Confused, he touches it for a moment wondering, did I put it in my pocket? What's what's happening here? At the Flamingo Club, we see a dance floor, couples dancing to, like, sort of big band style music. Laura walks in, looks around. She eventually sees Tony sitting at a table waiting for Steele. She's pissed. She walks up behind him, takes off her coat, and leans down and kisses him on the cheek. He jumps back, surprised to see her and asks what she's doing there. And she says, oh, you mean here or here in London? And she's obviously messing with him here. This is not this is not her cozying up because she's interested. This is her, like, I'm gonna figure out what he's up to, and I'm gonna do it by
Eric:Playing up to him.
Sara:Yeah. So he says, Tony says London, and she reaches up and pulls him down to her telling him a case. She leans in and starts touching him as she asks what he's doing there. He tells her Stonehenge, and she pretends to believe him saying, oh, archaeology doesn't pay much, but at least you get to travel. At least that's what he told her in Mexico. She leans on his shoulder and asks how long he'll be running around the ruins. Suggestive. Steele's voice cuts in as he sees her, and he says her name is surprised. She turns a big wide smile on his on her face and says, hello, dear. And, of course, that's when Steele should have known. He's in trouble. So, you know, yeah, be be on your guard here, dude. She she knows she knows something. She says, pull up a chair. Tony was just about to tell me about Stonehenge. Fascinating occupation, archaeology. And Tony smiles uncomfortably. Steele mouths, what is she doing here? And he mouths back, I don't know. Laura asks if Steele agrees, and he says
Eric:about Remy.
Sara:Yeah. Yeah. That's, I mean, come on, buddy. You have to know that your life is in danger at this point, that Laura is going to hurt you. Yes.
Eric:Just casually reach across the table and remove the knives.
Sara:Yeah. Exactly. And then Steele says, oh, yeah. That's why he's here. He and Anthony thought they would tip a few before he left. Right. Laura plays along and says, I didn't realize you 2 were so chummy. And Steele says, oh, he and Anthony have been mates since Mexico. And Tony laughs and agrees, yeah, old mates. And Steele continues saying, right. Mates all the way. He tells Tony, well, we'd love to stay and chat, but the case awaits. He reaches for Laura who says, it does? And Steele tells her there's been a fascinating new development. It seems Lindstrom was spotted in Liverpool. Laura, tired of being strung along, says, oh, really? And then Steele says again, again then again, he may be headed for Blackpool. So he suggested he take 1 pool, she take the other, and we'll see who gets washed up 1st. Behind them, we see Shannon appear. She says, thank god I found you, and stills Shannon? Surprised to see her. She's equally surprised to see him, even more surprised to see Tony, who she pretends to have a heart palpitation when she does. He tells her to take a seat and that it hasn't affected her penmanship. Laura asks where Mildred is. And Steele says, Mildred? Tony, Mildred? And then Mildred appears. Yeah. Mildred. Slide over, buster. This whole scene, I love. I love it. I love it. I love it. I love it. She says, boy, this is 1 crowded table. Still ask Mildred what the 2 of them are doing here. And Mildred says, Camille over here, locks her in a closet, sees him leaving, gets a case a case of the screaming memes, which, again, I had to look up because I've heard this expression.
Eric:Mhmm.
Sara:Again, did not know where it came from. And according to this, it says that this person writes a blog on communications, publication coach, and Carrie Grant Communications, which is funny. Sorry. Gray Grant Communications, not Carrie Grant. That was my brain. Misreading that. This person wrote, I adore reduplications and use them whenever I can. What are they? They occur whenever the root or stem of a word or part of it or even the whole word is repeated exactly with a slight change. Let me give you some examples, you'll see what I mean. Flim flam, willy nilly, namby pamby, pitter patter, or riff raff. I encountered some of my all time favorites this summer when I read Carl Heisson's amusing book Tourist Season. Let's see how he uses it. By the time a big company got around to referring to 1 of its employees to a psychiatrist, the screaming memees had already set in, and the patient often was receiving radio beams from Venus. Of course, I know that having screaming memees means having attack of nerves, but I never understood where the term came from, so I did some investigating. Here's the story. It dates from the 1st World War, when it referred to a certain kind of German artillery shells that made a screaming sound, something like meme or meme. Later, soldiers who experienced shell shock from hearing too many of those artillery shells were said to have the screaming meemies. Later, it became synonymous with heebie jeebies, and now we hear it with several slightly different meanings, including the willies or the creeps. During the 2nd World War, military officials resurrected the term to refer to a specific German rocket, the Nebelwerfer, and then to many other enemy rockets. Another term used for those rockets was said to have been the moaning Mimi the moaning Mimis. The moaning Minis. Sorry. That's, wow, that's hard to say. So that's where that comes from. Screaming memees. Nearby, someone pops a champagne cork and goes, the Duke, or, sorry, the Greek, before diving under the table. Mildred comments that she has a screw loose. Laura says, excuse me, before leaning under the table to tell her it was just a champagne cork. Shannon says, he's here. She can feel it, and grabs the waiter's legs ordering a brandy for her heart under the table. Steele leans under and asks, lost something? And Laura says, yes. My respect for you. And Steele asks, what about her respect for the dead duke? And she's, you know about the dead duke? Steele says he spent the last 4 hours trying to explain to London's finest how he got into a suit of armor. Then asks Laura if she cares to enlighten him. Tony ducks under the table and asks, what's going on? As the waiter reappears and then kneels down to ask, who will have the brandy? Shannon takes it. Mildred ducks under the table. Am I missing something? This whole scene is just hilarious. It's really funny. Laura tells her to ask him, and then they all sit back up. So once they're back sitting upright, Mildred says, alright, chief, give, just as Laura storms away. Steele protests and follows her as Tony yells to Steele that they have to get moving. Shannon scrambles after them, pleading with them not to leave her, and Mildred grabs the brandy, takes a sip commenting bets. They're all bets.
Eric:I don't I don't know about grabbing somebody else's drink and drinking it, but okay.
Sara:No. I wouldn't I wouldn't do that. Well, I don't think she had drank anything out of it yet. I can't remember exactly, but I don't think she had taken a sip of it yet. So if that were the case, fine. But, yeah, somebody had already taken a sip of it. No. Ew. Tony's or Steele grabs Laura, pulls her onto the dance floor. She demands to know what he and Tony are up to. Steele echoes us too, and then Shannon grabs a hold of Tony, and they begin to dance. She tells him that it was supposed to be the 2 of them on their honeymoon. Remember, now it's you and him. Steele responds with me and him. What about you and her? Laura retorts that it wouldn't be me and her if it weren't for you and her and wrenches herself away, turns away from him. She walks away and Tony grabs her. Steele protests. She and Tony dance as Shannon grabs ahold of Steele. She pleads with Steele Shannon pleads with Steele to believe her that she had to tell him she had no choice. She says it wasn't just the money. It was never just the money. Always the last to know Steele sorry, always last to know Steele asked what money. Meanwhile, Laura is berating Tony for lying about Stonehenge and archaeology. She says, you're not an archaeologist. You never were. He tells her that he didn't like lying to her, she says, Why not? You did it so well. He assures her that in a few hours, it'll all be over, and she can go back to playing Mrs. Steele. She demands to know just what he and his mate are up to as Steele grabs her arm and pulls her back. She says, I'm not finished with you yet. She's sort of yanked back. And then Steele asks, just when did you plan to tell him about his inheritance or tell me about my inheritance? And Laura says, well, she would have loved to tell him about his inheritance, but he was too busy with his mate. I think she's jealous. They're that they seem to be friendly.
Eric:Yeah. She well, this goes back to what I said earlier. She's taking she's mad, and and Steele is is taking the brunt of it. She's mad at Tony. And so because she's mad at Tony, of course, naturally, she's mad at Steele.
Sara:She's she's mad at Steele too because he's there again, more things he's not telling her.
Eric:And this Hello, Kettle? Well, yeah. Black pot.
Sara:Not I'm not arguing that she's not doing the same thing, and that's why he's mad at her. Like, they're both mad at each other because they're both not telling each other stuff. Mhmm. So but it did in this case, it makes for a funny scene, so I'm I'm fine with it. She tells Tony she isn't finished with him yet, and Steele asked oh, I'm sorry. I read that part. Laura says Too busy you made. Yeah. Laura Steele counters that she was too busy drudging up stray bodies with Shannon. Laura says, speaking of Shannon, he said he never wanted to see her again. He says he didn't. And she asked, well, when he found the time to tell her that their marriage was fake. Valid point. Steele says that he was trying to save her neck. She's surprised, and he says, well, who does she think took those shots at her and and met her in a jealous rage? Steele or Laura, furious, let me at her. She goes after her. Tony grabs her. Steele grabs Shannon, and she insists it wasn't her. It was the doctor. Back with Steele, he asks Shannon why her doctor would shoot at Laura. She tells him, Well, he's not a real doctor. He's the dead Duke's detective. Steele says, Never mind his occupation. What was the reason? Shannon says, Well, the Duke was concerned that he would never succumb to her charms, and he was merely trying to help him. Still asked by killing Laura? Back to Torah and Loni. Laura and Tony.
Eric:She said my bit.
Sara:Yeah. She could kill him. She accuses him saying that he hasn't been following her. She's he's been following him.
Eric:And now she's really jealous. Well,
Sara:and I don't think she's jealous because she's I don't think she's hurt because she had any interest in Tony, but I think she's angry because she knows that she was used. However, to however an extent, like, she trusted Tony, and it was a lie. And she had been tricked by him, and she's she's ticked off because she doesn't like to be used or especially used as a pawn to get to steal. Like, that's kind of the whole that goes back to the whole unnamed associate thing. Right?
Eric:Yes.
Sara:So it just yeah. She you've been using me to get to him. And Tony says he's just a guy trying to do a job. Laura asked, what job? And then Tony notices Fitch come in. He yells, change partners, and shoves Laura away and then finds himself dancing with Mildred, who tells him she has a bone to pick with him. Keep your mitts off the missus. I've got your number. Change partner. Yeah. He's scared of Mildred. You know? You can see that look in his eyes. Yeah. She she would cause Tony to disappear, and they'd never find the body. Like so he shoves Mildred at Laura, who knocks over a waiter. The crash causes Shannon to freak out. It's the Greek. It's the Greek. Tony appears behind Steele. They both take her by the arms, which Tony suggesting they get Ms. Wayne out of here. Steele agrees. As they walk towards the exit, Tony tells Steele to meet him at the bar, and she hadn't asked for a brandy.
Eric:Yes. Of course. Because why wouldn't you?
Sara:Steele takes her with him, telling her it's time to throw some water on her. As he walks away, Tony watches him go and then takes a seat next to Fitch. Fitch asks if everything is proceeding in order, Tony says smooth as silk. Fitch asks if mister Steele ran no. Not so much. Fitch asks if mister Steele is willing to play the messenger, and Tony says all he needs are the documents. Fitch asks if he understands the risks, and Tony says he thought he would break it to him gently. That nuts that that that never sounds good. That never sounds good. Fitch tells him, try not to let this 1 get away from him as he gets up and slides an envelope over to Tony. Before Tony can even touch it, Steele sits down, notices the envelope. He asked Tony for it. If it's or he asked Tony if it's his calling card, and Tony tells him that all he has to do is deliver Steele takes it, puts it in his pocket, and asks, what exactly am I delivering? Tony says that they found out Eric Lindstrom was an information broker. Steele looks Tony up and down and says, archaeology, immigration, now espionage. He tells he says, you're a multifaceted fellow. Tony continues saying that in order to buy his freedom, he told him about an American agent who wanted to go over to the other side. He even gave Steele a few of the documents he had for sale. Sarcastically, Steele says he drives a hard bargain. Tony continues saying, being an honest citizen, to which Steele interrupts and asks of any particular country? Tony smiles and says, he's made a few well placed phone calls and came up with the name Edward Helmsley, British intelligence. Steele surmises that with the intention of giving him these documents, Tony nods and says he sends Helmsley a note in his name setting up a meeting. And Steele says, I see, and looks around asking Tony where in the note he arranged this rendezvous. Tony tells him Paddington Station Platform 29. He tells Steele to get on his horse and goes to leave. Steele pulls him back because obviously Steele is reading the writing on the wall at this point. It's not just a, you know, here's the documents. He goes on his merry way. He says, he can assume his loyalties aren't what he's interested in. Might they be testing mister Helmsley's? And Tony smiles and says if Helmsley's straight, he will turn the documents over to his superiors. If he's not and Tony doesn't think he is, he will contact the American agent. Steele sarcastically says he wonders who that could be. Tony smiles and says, Helmsley, and he have a quiet little conversation, strike a deal, and he'll have them. Steele asks, what if Helmsley doesn't buy this? And Tony says, well, he'll kill you. Thought, yeah, that's not exactly breaking it to him gently, but, hey. Tony says all he has to can do all he has to do is convince him he's on the level. He reminds Steele that he convinced him his marriage was on the level, but he didn't.
Eric:That that's real confidence builder there.
Sara:That's that's not exactly yeah. He didn't convince
Eric:No. Exactly.
Sara:Didn't convince Tony his marriage was on the level. At no point was Tony buying that his marriage was on the level. So Yeah. Yeah. Steele glares at him then stands up to leave because, obviously, Steele knows yeah. I I didn't. So we see them go out the door, and Shannon, spotting them, follows. Outside, Steele puts his coat on and heads for the cab. We see Shannon following, yelling for Dougie and pleading not to leave her. As the cab pulls away, we hear Tony tell the driver Paddington Station. Tony looks over at Shannon who, upset, goes back inside as she and as she does so, she bumps into someone. When she sees him, she gasps, it's the Greek. She tells him that she has to warn him she has a weak heart. He's gonna kill her anyway. That's yeah. It's not really gonna matter. He grabs her and tells her not to worry. It won't bother her much longer. Yikes. Tony is right behind her. And this is where we know that Tony is not like, he's not my favorite person. Obviously, I don't they were setting him up in such a way that if Steele if if Brosnan walked away from the show that he would be the new guy. Mhmm. But he does have some redeeming qualities. In this case, he sees that Shannon is being taken. He does try to help. 1 of the Greek thugs punches him in the stomach. Laura and Mildred see it as well, prompting Laura and Laura to exclaim, I'll be damned. There really is a Greek, which I like. She gets in front of Shannon and the Greek and tells him to let her go. Instead, he punches her. Like Again. Again, this is we don't often see, like, this level, like, of violence against the female characters. We just straight up pops her in the face. She falls over a railing, crashes into a waiter while Mildred lands on the guy's lap. The Greek runs away with Shannon, and Laura apologizes to the waiter and chases after while Mildred grins at the man whose lap she's landed in.
Eric:This is funny. Yeah.
Sara:I like that. Next, we see the Greek yank a struggling Shannon out the back door and shove her into his car. Tony runs out front, sees them. He jumps into a yellow taxi, steals it to drive straight at the Greek. Laura runs up behind them and has to leap over the back of the Greek's car as he backs up. Tony rushes at the car and dives into the passenger window, grabbing the Greek in the steering wheel and steering the car into a wall. Tony falls back on the pavement, and as he tries to sit up, the Greek opens the door and bashes Tony in the face. Yay. I mean, small small victories as he gets out, and he makes a run for it towards another car that appears at the top of the alleyway. He jumps inside, and Laura catches up having seen the whole thing. Shannon gets out and tries to get away. Got Tony and Laura who catch up to her and Laura says, not so fast. Tony asks where they're headed and Shannon says that they would kill her if she didn't tell them where the jewels were. Laura says, and? Shannon says, well, I told them that I didn't have them. Tony says, and told them Dougie did. Wow. Thank you.
Eric:That was so helpful.
Sara:Yeah. Right? Like and then Tony, horrified, asks if she sent them to Paddington Station. Cause he knows what's gonna happen. Mildred, having joined them, is handed Shannon by Laura who tells her to hang on to Ms. Wayne. Mildred asks where she's going and Laura says Paddington Station. Tony grabs her arm and says, Oh no, you're not. But before anyone can react, a cop approaches and asks what seems to be the trouble here. And then Mildred does the same thing she did in Mexico. She shoves her purse into Shannon's arms and says, she stole my purse. Yep.
Eric:Hey.
Sara:Hey. Yeah.
Eric:It works.
Sara:If if it's not broke, don't fix it.
Eric:Right.
Sara:And then she even says that. She says, uh-huh. Laura leans down to Mildred and Mother's nice going, and Mildred says, well, it worked with the urn. Yeah. Only in in Mildred's case, in the in the case of the urn, she took the urn from the woman. In this case, she shoved her purse into Shannon's arms. Yeah. And I love Shannon's protests. I'd never steal her purse. It's vinyl.
Eric:Yeah. Right. I have standards.
Sara:Yeah. She's not bothered by the accusation of stealing. She's bothered by the accusation of stealing that purse. Yes. So that's funny. Laura slips out as they argue, and Mildred says, vinyl or not, I wanna press charges. So the cop, he goes to get the details, and we see Laura and Tony get into the Greek's car and drive away. In the car, Laura demands to know why they're going to Paddington Station. Tony admits that her husband is doing him a favor. Laura says, what kind of favor? And, again, Tony says, a dangerous 1, which is why they were trying to keep her out of it. Oh, this is proof that Tony does not know Laura very well because if there's anything that's going to anger her more than being used, it's being kept out of something because it's too dangerous.
Eric:Yeah. She infused that as even even in the situations, and we've had them before, we've discussed it, where she is in over her head and she she should have been kept out of it, except she shoved her nose into it. She still sees it as being condescending to her even when it's not.
Sara:In this case, though, it kind of is because Steele isn't neither 1 of neither Steele nor Laura are in intelligence. Tony has sent a civilian Mhmm. To do what is arguably something very dangerous. And Laura knowing about it is not going to make that it's it's not really like
Eric:Well, if she knows about it, she's likely to interfere and botch the whole operation.
Sara:Well, I I think if they had told her about it from the start, it might be different. But in this case, it's it's more dangerous not to tell her because she's gonna bumble in there not knowing what she's walking into.
Eric:Yeah. But she's she she she I I don't I don't believe that she would have kept her nose out of it. I I think she would have insisted on being involved because that's her personality. She doesn't like being cut out even when it's for her own good, even when she's getting in over her head.
Sara:I don't think she
Eric:attitude is, where's the deep end of the pool? I don't know how to swim, but I'm gonna dive in anyway.
Sara:I don't think she would have insisted on delivering the documents with him, though. I think she would have wanted to be in the background watching.
Eric:But But she would have inserted herself into it in some manner. And at some point, in some way, she would have, yeah, she would have she would have
Sara:But you could also make the argument that if they are in a committed relationship, whether it's a marriage or a fake marriage or whatever you wanna call it, if he's gonna put his life on the line, she should know about it. That's that's not something that you just go off and do and don't tell your partner.
Eric:Well, of course, he didn't know that it was putting his life on the line until just a few minutes earlier.
Sara:I mean, I I I need you to deliver a package. He's not working for FedEx. That's that's
Eric:an assumption. Necessarily imply mortal danger.
Sara:If Tony can't do it himself, I would assume that there's something dangerous about it.
Eric:No. If Tony can't do it himself, it's because he's a known quantity, and they need somebody who isn't known.
Sara:There's still probably gonna be some risk there. And even, like, when he did find out the risk, he could have gone over like, I don't know. It just this is something that she should have known about, I think. But either way, this is where she accuses Tony to his face of using her. Getting close to her to get to him. And Tony admits he didn't have to get close to her to get to him. Kinda did in Mexico because as you pointed out, he assumed that he would be saving both of them and ended up only saving her. So but then he says he just got close to her. Mhmm. She stares at him for a moment, turns away, and tells him to watch the road. At Paddington Station, we see Steele. This is a gorgeous visual in the sense that he's got that long trench coat on, and it looks very 19 forties. Right? It's got that
Eric:Yeah. It's very 19 forties. I I wanna say it's the the train, especially the engine, being an old steam engine, has kind of a to me, a Poirot feel. Yeah. If you've ever seen the the Poirot series with oh, what's his name?
Sara:I can't remember, but I know exactly what you mean.
Eric:Yeah. And for some reason, the shots of him on the platform remind me of Sherrod with Cary Grant for some reason. Yeah. And I don't know why.
Sara:Because that's It's all yeah. It's also feel like it's got that noir feeling to it.
Eric:Yes. Yeah.
Sara:So it it it just it looks cool. Mhmm. And you you see him standing there. He's checking his watch. Eventually, a man, Helmsley, steps into the shadows and asks if he's Remington Steele. He walks toward the man, but Helmsley pulls a gun and says no closer than asks if he recognizes the sound. He cocks the gun and Steele tells him it's the cocking of a wall through P 38. How would he know? He gets it wrong. We find that out later. But, like, how would he know enough to even make, like, an educated guess? This man hates guns. He hates them. Well He's not a gun expert.
Eric:He he's been exposed to them enough probably in his life, in his life as a con man and criminal that he's probably familiar with weapons. But, yeah, you're right. How would you know a a Walther p 38 from a
Sara:PPK or a, you know
Eric:Yeah. Anything.
Sara:Whatever else. Like yeah. And he could have just said it's the cocking of a gun. Mhmm. I guess it sounded cooler to say Walter p 38, but turns out to be wrong anyway. Yeah. Helmsley tells him they're gonna have a little pop quiz. And unless he's satisfied with his answers, he's gonna pull the trigger. Still comments that it sounds more like a final exam. Kinda reminds me of them. If you've ever seen the movie Speed, there's a scene early on in the film where there's a terrorist that has blown out the brakes on an elevator, and he's threatening to blow the emergency brakes unless he gets paid $2,000,000. And Kyoto Ryu's character is a bomb squad person, and Jeff Daniels plays like his mentorsuperior. And while they're waiting for orders from their captain, he's giving him, like, quizzes on scenarios that they may encounter. And this becomes, like, a running theme in the film because he says to him, pop quiz. Airport. Gunman was on a hostage. You're he's using her to get to the for cover to get to the plane. You're a 100 feet away. What do you do? And Reeves' character says, shoot the hostage. And later on in the film, the bad guy has him at gunpoint. Pop quiz, hotshot. There's a bomb on a bus. It's a whole thing. So when he says, like, here's a little quiz. I'm like, pop quiz. There's a bomb on a bus. Not not the same thing. So Helmsley 1st asked him who supplied him with the envelope in his jacket pocket. Steele says a gentleman named Eric Lindstrom. Helmsley says question number 2. How did he come upon this Lindstrom? Steele says he stole a painting from his client and was trying to get it back. Not a bad answer. Helmsley says, question number 3, why did he contact him? Steele tells him friends in the trades that he would he was the man to talk to. Helmsley comments, that's interesting, that their American cousins had never heard of him. Steele says that they had a falling out and says that he knows how messy those little tiffs can be. Helmsley says he's starting to fade, and Steele says, well, he's tired of this quiz. He came here to help. You don't want my help? I'll go back to my hotel. He turns to leave, and that's when Helmsley yells back to him. Steele stops and tells him he just passed or Helmsley tells him he just passed. Steele approaches him, gives him the envelope, which he puts in his pocket, and Helmsley smiles and says, by the way, it was Beretta. Okay. Like, again, I wouldn't have known a Beretta from a, you know, whatever. Like he then goes 1 way, Steele goes the other. As he's walking through the station, he's approached by the Greek who tells him he wants his jewels. Steele, I'm sure you do. He's so confused. But before he can say anything else, the thugs grab him and start punching him in the stomach. The Greek tells Steele to speak before he's unable to. He pulls back his fist to punch him, but before he can, Tony jumps him, shoves him into a photo booth. Steele and Tony take on the thugs, and the Greek eventually ends and the Greek eventually ending up back to back. They almost punch 1 another, but stop themselves. Yes. And again, I like this scene. I like them fighting together. I like them kind of having to have each other's backs. This is where this is the only place I enjoy Tony is when he's with Steele. Mhmm. As the Greek and the thugs get up, Steele asks Tony if he has any idea who that is. And Tony says, it's the Greek. Steele, of course. Who else could it be? I
Eric:guess. It's so obvious. Right?
Sara:Of course, it's the Greek. Like, he doesn't even have a well, he does have a name, but at this, he's just referred to as the Greek. They continue to trade blows, and 1 of the thugs pulls a knife. He's about to attack when he's hit on the back of the head with what looks to be a candy machine. How did aren't those bolted to the ground? Like
Eric:No. Not necessarily. Mhmm. I would've thought okay. You would probably want to under ideal conditions, but, yeah, from what I remember, we had had these kinds of things in stores when I was a kid, and I vaguely recall them. And I think they were just you know, you brought them in. Some of them may have been bolted in, some of the larger, heavier ones, but like these single pedestal ones, I think they were just set there. They were heavy enough that they weren't gonna and the design of them was that they were heavy enough low on the pedestal that they weren't gonna be easily tipped over. I'm not sure you would easily pick 1 up and bonk somebody over the head with it. But yeah.
Sara:Well, I mean, she does. So Tony compliments Steele on his right. Steele compliments Tony on his left, and Laura asked them to both stop playing John Wayne and tell her what's going on. Tony asked if he took the bait. Steele says like a starving surgeon. Laura demands to know what bait, and Tony says your husband will tell you later. Steele holds out his hand to shake and tells Tony the time has come to bid him a reluctant ado. Oh, if only. Tony slips out pretty much immediately. Laura tells him that he's not leaving until she knows what's going on, and some police officers fill the station asking if they had a bit of a row. Tells them yes and asks them to arrest these gentlemen, and he will fill them in when they get to the police station. I'm sorry. They're they're they're taking orders from a random civilian who's who's who's who's standing up and conscious when those men aren't. Yeah. Like, it looks
Eric:That's right.
Sara:To the naked eye, like an assault that steal and perpetrated or something. And he's just like, yes. Arrest these men.
Eric:Yeah. That's what you do. You always arrest the victim. I mean, that's that's the current that's the the current, you know, way that things are done. Looks so newspaper.
Sara:Right? He just it just it's kinda funny where he's just like, yeah. Arrest these men, and I'll tell you everything. Okay, sir, who I don't know. Sure. I'll just arrest them for what? Being unconscious? Yeah. Like, what is the crime that they're arresting them for? And he looks at Laura pointedly saying that she can fill him in as he fills them in. Mhmm. At the police station, we see Mildred and Shannon at the desk talking to the clerk. He reminds Mildred that she had her arrested, now she wants her released? And Mildred's like, is it against the law to change your mind in England? Outside, we hear Laura coming in. She's telling the officer, if they do some checking, they will find that Mr. Theodopoulos is responsible for murdering the Duke of Wallingford. The Greek sees Shannon and insists, it's her. She's the 1 who stole the jewels. Shannon, I've never seen this man before in my life. And the Greek says, she's a lying thief, and insists that he has proof. He has a photograph. The cop looks at her and says, he's afraid he's going to have to detain her until all of this is sorted out. Shannon runs over to Steele, pleading for Dougie to help her, and Steele, oh, this is this is this is so cathartic, throws up his hands and tells says, you know, nope. You're on your own. The cop takes Shannon away as she tells them that she's sure she can explain this to everyone's satisfaction. She starts by saying, it started in Paris. It was raining. It always rains in Paris. And I have to say, I enjoy that. Like, Shannon in this episode is quite funny and enjoyable. Shannon in the last episode, not so much. Yes. Mildred goes over to Steele as she leaves and says that she thinks she will do just fine on her own. Steele agrees and says another hard day's work accomplished. Laura tells him that he still owes her an explanation regarding him and Tony. Steele agrees and throws an arm around her suggesting they go back to the hotel and enjoy the fruits of their labors. The cop has other ideas. Okay. He says, just a moment to Steele. Like, obviously, they're not just gonna walk out, like, but they have a few forms to fill out before they go. And he just grabs this huge stack of papers. Like, it's like this big. It sets it down. Yep. And Mildred, being the IRS, you know, alumni, she just whimpers at the sight of the pages. Oh, that's great. I like that. So then when you see them leaving, and Mildred is complaining about the hours of paperwork saying these guys have the IRS beat hands down. Laura says all she wants to do is take a shower and go to sleep. Before they can, though, the solicitor in the bowler hat calls out Seal's name and asks to have a word with him. Again, this is so weird. Why didn't he just come up to them in the airport?
Eric:Yeah. I mean or send him an send him a letter or, you know, something, some sort of formal communication and request that they show up at the the offices of the solicitors. I mean, it just it's real simple.
Sara:His it it's real weird. Yeah. So he he comes and calls Steele's name. And where am I? Sorry. Oh, asked to have a word with him. Steele says another time, but Laura grabs his arm saying, that's a solicitor with your inheritance. Steele's, like, a hopeful grin on his face. On 2nd thought, always in a mood for a good conversation. Yes. Yep. He takes the man by the shoulder and leans forward leads him forward, asking him to step this way. Later on in the hotel, we see Steele signing a document given to him by the solicitor. When he steps back, he says everything looks to be in order. Steele says, good, asks, and adds, it's a shame that the year old didn't find his real son before he died. The solicitor says he always had a real bond with Steele, and in a certain sense, he was that long lost son, which is why he remembered him in his will. And I unless they kept in touch
Eric:Mhmm.
Sara:This seems really silly because they had a conversation that was all of 2 minutes.
Eric:Yeah. If that. Yeah. Maybe maybe a little over that.
Sara:Like, granted, it was a conversation that was a little more kind of deep and meaningful than most strangers have when they 1st meet each other, but it still wasn't any sort of I mean, I guess the bond being that Steele was looking for a father he never found, and Lira was looking for a son that he never found. But Mhmm. I I'm we don't have any indication that he didn't keep in touch, so maybe they sent each other letters. Who knows? But if they hadn't, this would be a weird a weird person to remember in your will. Oh, yeah. I think I'm gonna I think I'm gonna leave something to the guy that I thought might have been my son, but it turns out he wasn't. Yeah. Steele says it's a generous thought. Mildred somewhat ghoulishly asks when they get the dough. The solicitor is a bit confused, and she clarifies the million pounds. Solicitor realizes that she's made a mistake. Didn't I mention that? You see, the Earl didn't leave you cash. And, okay, Steele just signed a whole bunch of documents. Did he not see anywhere on the documents that he was signing the deed of a castle and not, you know, money?
Eric:Hey. You know, people sign stuff. You ever gone to a website and clicked agree?
Sara:Sure.
Eric:But Have you read what you agreed to?
Sara:Of course, I haven't. But but this is a little different because you would think if you were accepting 1000000 pounds or you thought you were accepting 1000000 pounds, you would expect to sign banking information, banking documents, transferring that money from your account to or from their account to your account. But Steele wouldn't have provided any of that banking information
Eric:Yeah. That's
Sara:true. Theoretically. He would, however, have signed a deed to a castle. He would have to in order to inherit said castle. So it seems a little weird that that only comes up at the end. But it's funny, so we'll hand weave it because he says, he didn't leave you cash. K? Still still hopeful. Ask what exactly did he leave? A castle. Then Laura, a castle?
Eric:I love that. That's
Sara:funny.
Eric:And then I love the the fact that when the solicitor continues, he says in Ireland, and he's got a sour look on his face like He
Sara:does. Yeah. Like, it's dirt under his shoe. Although and there's this there's this guy on TikTok. He calls himself, shoot, something like the moronic millennial or something like that. It's kind of a joke. And he does these videos where he he shows the prices of castles or mansions for sale in other countries, European castles, things like that, and compares them to crappy Toronto real estate. And the Toronto real estate is usually more expensive and than the castle. Like, you can buy a whole castle in Italy somewhere for less than you could buy a condo in in Downtown Toronto sort of thing. And so this kinda made me think about that a little bit just the way he's in Ireland. Like like, it's somehow a a downgrade. You know? Yes. So and yeah. That he's says, well, now that you have the deeds now that you have the deeds, did Steele not notice he was signing a deed to a castle? Yes.
Eric:Sure. Yeah.
Sara:He'll be popping along. He says congratulations again and then leaves. Mildred, she's happy. She doesn't care if it's not money. She's excited. She says this calls for bubbly. She goes to break out the champagne while Steele muses about having given a castle in Ireland. I mean, yeah. I'm not gonna say no to that. Well No. I guess not until I get there and find out that there's a bill for everything. But until that point, it seems pretty cool. Laura, she says, honeymoon in an Irish castle tucked away where nobody can find us. Doesn't sound too shabby to me. And then, of course, Steele's Periscope moves when he realizes what she's implying. And he tells Mildred to book book them, yeah, book them on the night boat to Dublin. They're going to Ireland. Excitedly, I guess Mildred Mildred assumed she's invited along on their on their Irish honeymoon because she pumps the champagne cork to Ireland. So, yeah, apparently, she's coming along, and and the the agency can just stay closed longer? That's right. Mark. We switch over and we see Helmsley. He's walking down the street. He goes into a building. And inside, we see an old dilapidated staircase. He begins to climb it and then turns as he hears a creek. He calls out for mister Roselli, and Tony's voice is up here from above. He continues to climb the stairs. Where like, is this like a like a flophouse or some sort of abandoned
Eric:Just it's an abandoned building sort of thing. Yeah. Okay. I could see.
Sara:Because, again, like, some of these locations, would have really have liked to know where they were supposed especially that place where they were shooting arrows. It was very strange.
Eric:Yeah. But this just looks like some abandoned building in the middle of a block.
Sara:Yeah. Okay. So he finds Tony sitting in an old chair, smiles having expected him and says he's right on time. He asked if he'd like a tea, and he turns his back, which is stupid. I'm sorry. But even if you expect that this is this guy is gonna think you're a double agent or what have you, you don't turn your back on him. He grabs 2 mugs for the for the kettle. He puts the teabags in the cups, and he asks if he got his package. Helmsley says, yes. It was very interesting reading. And Tony tells him there's more where that came from. Helmsley says he's sure there is. Tony says, for the right price. Helmsley pulls a gun from his coat, telling him he's got his down payment. He cocks it, ready to fire, but Tony reacts, throws the hot water in his face, which ouch.
Eric:Oh, yeah. That would really hurt.
Sara:The gun goes off but misses, and Tony runs out of the room, jumps the banister of the stairs to go down to another floor faster. Helmsley follows and keeps shooting at him. Tony does the same thing, jumps down a banister, waits at the bottom of the stairs until Helmsley is at the top. He takes aim just as Tony literally pulls the rug out from under him.
Eric:Sets him crashing. Things are tacked down.
Sara:But Yeah. I know. I know. Hey. The ruins of a castle.
Eric:Don't don't go there. Don't go there.
Sara:So, yeah, he pulls the rug out from under him, sends him crashing through the window behind him, and Tony runs up to the window and looks out to see Helmsley down on the ground dead, which technically not Tony's fault. I mean yeah.
Eric:He Technically not. But
Sara:He probably shouldn't he probably also should not have gone through that window. Yeah. So we switch over. We're inside a beautifully furnished room, and we see Fitch. The phone rings. He answers it. Tony says Do
Eric:do do do Are those re the reading chairs, whatever they're called, are those real or just a TV thing?
Sara:Oh, no. They're real. Why? I don't know, but they're real. They're certainly not comfortable. I'll tell you that. But I
Eric:I just I I don't understand the purpose, but alright.
Sara:Yeah. So he says Helmsley tried to kill him, and Fitch asked where he is now and Tony or, well, where Helmsley is now. Sorry. And Tony says he's dead. Fitch asked about the documents, and Tony says he didn't have them. Well, technically, he could have had them. Tony didn't check the body, at least not that we know of. Right?
Eric:Not that we saw.
Sara:Yeah. I guess he probably did go and check the body before
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:Emergency services got there.
Eric:But Mhmm.
Sara:Fitch tells Tony he made a royal mess of this 1, and Tony asks why Helmsley tried to kill him. Pitch says, obviously, his little act was very unconvincing, but Tony insists that someone tipped him off. He can hear sirens in the background. Sorry?
Eric:Tony is really, really stupid. Okay. Granted He's
Sara:very stupid.
Eric:He's he's all frustrated and and emotional at this point, but there's only 2 people
Sara:Yes.
Eric:That knew what was going on, Steele and Fitch.
Sara:Yep. And this is the 2nd time something's gone wrong because we Mhmm. He referenced an earlier job that went wrong where he lost 3 men. Fitch is his point of contact. We're assuming Fitch was his point of contact before. He knows there's a mole in British intelligence. I mean, this this 1 plus 1 equals 2.
Eric:What do you need? A sign pointing away?
Sara:Like, Fitch is the bad guy. It's him. He did it. But, apparently, Tony doesn't clue him because he can hear sirens in the background as Fitch tells Tony he warned him. Now he's left him with the debris. He tells Tony to get out, and he better pray that he doesn't get him before the police do. He hangs up, as does Tony, who angrily throws his phone across the room. Later at a train station, we see Laura and Steele in a private car. Laura snuggles up close.
Eric:I want to oh, you go ahead and finish. I wanna make a comment about this scene Okay. When when you're done.
Sara:Laura snuggles up close to Steele and tells Steele that she heard it was at least 4 hours until the ferry. Steele, eager, tells missus Steele there's some positive that there's something positively lascivious in her tone. She pauses and looks up in shock. Steele does as well to see Tony standing in the doorway of the train car holding a brown envelope. He asks Steele how it's going, and Steele, confused, says he thought they said their final farewells last night. Tony tells him he forgot this. He sits down on the seat opposite them and hands them the envelope, telling him it's Shannon Wayne's statement. Steele says that's very kind of him to remember, clearly wanting him gone. Tony tells him that they won't be bothered by immigration anymore. Steele pointedly says that's not the only thing he doesn't wanna be bothered by anymore, which, yeah. Yeah. I can see this is becoming an issue. Yes. The train starts moving, and Laura points out there underway. And Tony says that he'll get off at the next stop. Steele gets an irritated nod, and Tony asks where they're going as the train halts to a screeching stop. Steele gets up to look to see what's going on. He says to Tony, tell me, Anthony, you wouldn't happen to know why there's a bevy of Bobbies boarding our train, would you? And I love that phrase. Mhmm. I looked up why they're called Bobbies, again, because I was curious. Mhmm. And I have this dictionary explanation. Where is it? Here. Okay. Slang term for a member of London's Metropolitan Police Force derived from the name of sir Robert Peel who established the force in 1829. Police officers in London who are also known as Peelers for the same reason. After becoming home secretary in the British government between 1825 and 1830, Peel undertook a comprehensive consolidation and reform of criminal laws. At the time, policing in London and elsewhere in Britain was largely carried out by constables who reported to local magistrates. Soldiers were deployed out only in cases of civil or political unrest. Peel proposed that the professional that a professional police force be established by the government. The suggestion was not initially popular, and many cities thought that such a force would target political opponents The government would threaten civil liberties. Nonetheless, the Metropolitan Police Act was passed in 1829, establishing a new force to patrol all of Metropolitan London except the city the Central City Of London, the Financial District. Yeah. We're just gonna let them keep committing their crimes.
Eric:That's right.
Sara:We're not gonna we're not gonna place them. That's fine. Yeah. The Metropolitan Police Force, later called the Metropolitan Police Service or commonly known as the Metropolitan Police or Scotland Yard, was governed by 2 newly appointed justices or commissioners, the 1st 2 being Charles Rowan and Richard Main, who were directly responsible to the home secretary. So let me see here. The responsibilities of police were to detect and prevent crimes, although they also found themselves taking over activities from the night watchmen such as lighting lamps and watching for fires. The original uniform consisted of a blue tailcoat and top hat that was meant to emphasize that the police were not a military force, as well as the fact that the officers did not carry guns, and that is still the case. The uniforms of modern Bobbies have changed, but they remain unarmed. So that's where that comes from.
Eric:Up through this point where Steele asks why there's a bevy of Bobbies, and then the next shot is of Tony getting up out of the seat and stepping over.
Sara:Yep.
Eric:It's if you look at this visually, these shots, it's a weird mix because you've got the shots of Tony generally are nice and clear.
Sara:Right.
Eric:The shots of Steele and Laura well, 1st of all, like the fact that they've got Laura dressed in a 1940 style outfit, which is presumably an old a tie into the old movies that take place on trains like on the Orient Express, you know, and given cat is cute, but she's not a lot. They're they're on this old steam engine, which is presumably some, you know, of that vintage in the 19 forties. But the image quality jumps back and forth because
Sara:It does.
Eric:The shots Yeah. Especially with Laura and Steele, they're very dark. They're very grainy.
Sara:Grainy. Yes. Okay. I thought it was just my DVDs, but it's yours too. Then it's not just me.
Eric:No. Because it's it's not consistent. It's Yeah. Only certain shots, primarily those where they're looking into the car from the the hallway area or, you know, shots into the car. And I don't know if it's I I came up with 2 possible explanations, and I I'd be curious to know which 1 it is. The 1st is that it's a deliberate choice
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:Which makes it, again, seem like a tie in to those old classic movies Yeah. Because it's very contrasty, very grainy, but it also could have been that they took and they shot those particular shots at wider angles than they ultimately ended up using, and so they blew it up and in the process became very, very grainy and in blowing it up and making the successive generations of prints as they were blowing it up, it became contrasty. I'm I'm I would really love to know why that is the way it is because it's it's very noticeable. It's very inconsistent from shot to shot. You know, and again, like I said, it's mostly the shots pointing in up until the point where Tony gets up and steps over to the hallway Yeah. After Steele asked that question because from that point on, you don't see that graininess again. And, course, from this point on, it's Laura playing tonsil hockey with Tony. Yeah. Yeah. So, you know, if it was a deliberate choice where Steele and Laura were in the scenes, then of course you wouldn't do that against Laura and Tony because you're trying to set a mood of, you know, the romantic. But even 1 of the shots of Steele, Laura, and Tony in the car has that same look. So it's it's just very confusing.
Sara:It is confusing. And I I noticed that too.
Eric:I think of stuff like this when I don't know the answer.
Sara:Yeah. Because I noticed that too. And I thought it might maybe something's just wonky with my DVD. I I didn't realize that was everybody's DVDs. So, yeah, no, I'm I'm curious too because
Eric:it The other the other the other possibility is that when they were putting together the film for the DVD transfer, they had to replace certain shots with 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generation shots because the original films were no longer available. So they're dealing with it's it's the same shot, but it's like the 3rd or 4th generation. And so that's where we see the degradation. But it's just curious that it's certain shots and they all share something very much in common, which almost suggests that it's a stylistic choice. True. I don't know. Anybody know? Anyway, hey. Anybody out there? Just if you know, let us know.
Sara:Answer to. Yeah.
Eric:Questions to people. Yeah. Judith, where are you?
Sara:If you know Please tell us.
Eric:Our our our encyclopedia of Steele knowledge.
Sara:And that's where it like, he sees the cops coming. Tony, as you said, gets up, looks out, sits back down, and then desperately, he looks to Laura and pleads with her to help him steal in a much less forgiving mood says he feels a distinct lack of motivation. As police get closer, Laura takes matters into her own hands and jumps on Tony, kissing him. As the police arrive, Steele Remington Steele here and his bride on their honeymoon in the car and introduces himself as Trevor Keetch, British Railway Association. He asked if he could help the police, and he tells them that they're looking for a murderer. A murderer? On my train? Well, for heaven's sake, what are you standing around here for? Go find him. Please. Please. I mean, this is not this is not a good look for the London police force here that they don't even ask to look at the faces of the 2 people making out on the train that
Eric:they're just taking
Sara:this guy. Or his ID. Right? Like, he's Trevor Keetch, British Railways. So and? Like, we're looking for a murderer. We need to at least see the ID of no. No. He just they just run off. Like, that's yeah. That's not that's not great. And this is this is, the cop leaves. Laura, though, is still kissing Tony.
Eric:Yeah. She she has not come up for air. She made no indication that she's about to come up for air. She seems to be enjoying herself.
Sara:Yeah. And here's my Buffy reference for the for the episode because this reminds me of the 2nd season finale where this yeah. Season 2 finale where they're trying to get information out of Giles and Drusilla, who is a vampire, she casts, like, a spell on Giles to make him think that she's somebody else. And they start making out. And once they get the she gets the information, Spike is in is watching this take place. And he's like, Drusilla, honey, we're done. And she you know, she's just like, you know, keeps going. Then finally, she turns around. She's like, sorry. I was in the moment. I'm like but in this in that case, it's funny. In this case, it is not.
Eric:It is I'll not I'll make a home improvement reference cause there was an There we go. Yeah. There was an episode where Jill has a dream about a guy that she had met in the gym. And in the dream, she's making out with him and she wakes up and it's like, oh. And and when she's telling her friends later, it's like, she she's not exactly totally disturbed by the dream. I
Sara:mean, there's nothing wrong about having a spicy dream about someone else as long as you're not doing anything with that person or engaging with that person in any way that's spicy because you can't really control what your brain comes up with when you're unconscious. Right? I'm just saying. Yeah. But in this case, Laura, like, still says to her, he's gone. She keeps kissing him. Probably back at the station, having a cup of tea, playing darts. She kisses him a little bit longer and then eventually sits back down and like, I'm come on. Like, I mean
Eric:Yeah. And the look on her face is like, oh, I I'm feeling things.
Sara:Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew. No. No. Up until this point, she has maintained a boundary, this even when she kissed him in Steele's living room, it or Steele's apartment, it was very clear that she was it was not because she was, you know, wanting to kiss him. It was literally just to make him jealous. But this and I
Eric:get She's enjoying it too much, and she's she's clearly She's she's, as as Kaylee would say, feeling things in her nethers.
Sara:And yeah. Like, it's 1 thing like, you can sort of understand why she did what she did because it obscures his face. Mhmm. Steele jumped in and and went with the ruse. Like, Steele didn't have to. He he did it. Mhmm. But then after she clearly hears that he's gone, she should have wrenched herself back and and made it very clear that this was not something that she had enjoyed doing. But no. She continues to kiss him, then she sits back and she's like, oh. Ew. And that's that's out of that's out of character. It is out of character for her. That is not something that she has ever done, frankly. Like, she's ever anytime she's ever had to distract a bad guy or flirt with somebody, It's always been somebody that she's not in any way attracted to or has any interest in. And, yeah, Steele sometimes gets a bit jealous, but she's always kind of clear on like, this is this is a like, that mister Dominic on his boat in season Mhmm. The season 2 premiere. Like, this is just they're they were deliberately trying to set this up in case Rosman walked away, and they wanted to keep it going. Mhmm. But at the expense of her character because I don't think she would do a minute ago, she was snuggling Steele and talking about how, hey. Oh, it's we got 4 hours on this train. We're getting all cozy Mhmm. Honeymoon in Ireland. And now it's like, oh, Tony, my toes have curled. No. No. Like, no. Yeah. Steele tells her sarcastically quick thinking and she breathily says, thank you. But she's not looking at Steele. She's looking at him. Yep. Excuse me while I vomit. Tony gratefully tells her that she saved his life and Steele, not happy, asks, why does he feel like he's gonna regret that act of mercy? That's right. Laura fixes her hat because now she's all ruffled because Yes. Oh my gosh, I've just been kissed so thoroughly by this handsome man. Blah. Blah. Blah. Blah. Excuse me while I vomit again because I didn't vomit enough the 1st time. And the train keeps going as the scene freezes saying to be continued because, of course, it does.
Eric:Yes. So I you know, this this is probably a 1st for television. It's a 7 part episode or 6 part episode if you think about it. No. It's it's 7. I mean 6 6 episodes in season 5 and bonds as the Yeah. The start of the episode.
Sara:It's actually not because a lot of TV shows are doing this now where they do 6 episode miniseries or they're short. Right? But this was not something that they did back then.
Eric:No. Not then.
Sara:Yeah. And and this just this was a it's a crappy way to wrap it. Well, again, they probably didn't know they were wrapping it up. They were hoping that they could
Eric:They probably had no clue what was going on, really.
Sara:Well, if Brosnan walked away, we've got Jack Scalia or Scalia, however you pronounce his name. He is a good looking guy. He's just not what the show had established as as the pairing. Right? That's not
Eric:Yes.
Sara:And and the chemistry was always between her and and it just they're trying to it's kinda like how they kept The X Files going far longer than its sell by date when Duchovny walked away and and they thought, oh, we'll just bring in Robert Patrick or what have you. It's it when your 2 leads are the are the the glue, it's not an ensemble. You can't have a character, a main character walk away, especially not when the show is titled Remington Steele, and then have the character that's been playing Remington Steele walk away. Like, you couldn't do the same thing if Laura left either. Like, he there's literally no way you could keep this series going without either of them. They are the central pair that keeps the show together. So
Eric:Yeah. And, you know, Scarecrow and Mrs. King had the same issue because when they were at the end of the run, presumably they knew they were being canceled and and I'm guessing that Kate Jackson just at that point lost interest because the last 2 episodes of that that show, she's almost not even in them.
Sara:Yeah. Yeah. And it's just
Eric:they paired him up with the gal the Francine character, and it just didn't work.
Sara:Yeah. And and another example would be Highlander, the series. They had the 1st 5 seasons with sort of a rotating cast of characters that came in and out. But in the 5th season the 6th season is referred to by the fans as season sucks because it's really terrible. In the 5th season, a major character gets killed off in a really stupid, stupid way. And then season 6, they basically decided was gonna be the last season, but they wanted to do a spin off series. They weren't sure what characters they were gonna spin off yet, though. They wanted a female character. Initially, they had planned for the female character that had been on the suit or they had planned for a few, but they decided, we want a female character, an immortal. So Mhmm. They basically, almost every single episode introduced a new female immortal, either as an enemy for Duncan or a friend or somebody. And but eventually, he was barely in his own show. It was all these new female immortals showing up, and each episode was like their audition piece. If the fans like this 1, we'll spin her off. If the fans like this 1, we'll spin her off. And then when none of them really took hold, they went with a long time established female character that had been on the show since the beginning and made The Ravens. So it was like, k? That was a
Eric:waste of time.
Sara:Yeah. And but they ended up having, you know, the main character be a guest in his own series, and the show just kinda plummeted in in quality because you it it'd be like if they took bones and took away either Booth or or Brennan. You can't do it. Yeah. Doesn't work. So this this was silly. They are trying to set up something that character wise would never it just doesn't fit Laura. She wouldn't
Eric:Yeah.
Sara:I could see I could see her kissing Tony as a distraction to get the police away. I could see that. Yeah. I could see her doing that. I could see still not liking it. But the fact that she enjoyed it and kept kissing him is where, to me, that's where the the lining in the sand character wise gets drawn because
Eric:yeah, no.
Sara:But the next episode is well, actually, 1st, any other thoughts? No. No.
Eric:I'm done.
Sara:Yeah. It's a good it's a good 2nd 0.5, strong 2nd 0.5. Well That lasts
Eric:Well, it's stronger than the 1st 0.5. Let's put it that way. I'm not gonna say it's strong. It's stronger.
Sara:I enjoy it. I enjoy this 1 is a is 1 I freely will admit that I enjoy.
Eric:It has good moments. It has good moments.
Sara:I don't like the ending, but I like the rest of it.
Eric:Alright. Fine.
Sara:On the website, www.steelwatching.com. We've got show notes, links to Amazon u oh, wait. We didn't have do we have any movie references? No.
Eric:Mm-mm.
Sara:Okay. So I guess maybe we won't. But there will be links to, you know, places you can buy a fabulous shirt or a mug or something like that. Or if you wanna just support us, make a donation, what have you, you'll find that. There's also social media resources and links such as?
Eric:The official Steele watching Facebook page, the official Twitter and Instagram pages, and then also the link to the ever popular, but not our official Steele Watchers fan group on Facebook. So
Sara:Join us. Join us.
Eric:That's that's where all the action is. It's where all happening at the zoo.
Sara:It's where all the the wedding dress slash sweater porn is posted.
Eric:So That's right.
Sara:Yeah.
Eric:That's right.
Sara:All the good stuff. Yeah. Uh-huh. Gimme gimme. And the next episode will be Stealed With A Kiss part 1.
Eric:Which I I did a sneak preview of, and I'm going to have to be very, very careful about a sweater comment I make in 1 particular scene.
Sara:Yeah. I expect there's gonna be lots of sweater comments in these last 2 because well, she actually, she's wearing that purple outfit for a good chunk of this episode. But
Eric:Well, there's 1 where apparently it was a little bit nipply, and then they were filming it.
Sara:It's a tippet nipply, my dad used to say. Anyway, and
Eric:on that
Sara:note Alright. Bye bye. Bye, everybody.
